Wow... I don't think they even won X-Factor and yet they get their own novel? :(
When does Will Young get his own novel? Or Steve Brookstein? I'm missing out on some big money!

Away to Microsoft Word!

Yay! I love getting opportunities to criticize books I haven't read a word of!
It's a fan fiction. About a shitty boyband. Written by a sixteen year old.

Thats like all the ingredients you need to make something brain meltingly awful. Sure, none of us have read a word of it, but if someone makes a sandwich with moldy bread, dog turds and powdered sewage, you don't need to take a bite to know it'll be awful.
Thing is, I don't think the fact that their music is shitty is relevant to the discussion unless this is a songfic. And actually it's not even relevant then, since songfics always suck. (To those of you who don't know: A songfic is when you write fanfiction and quote pop music lyrics in the story to set the mood and describe what a character is feeling.)
And since she chanegd the names, well, it's a story about a boy band and a regualr girl. Doesn't have to be bad, even though it probably will be (Sturgeon's law).

Sorry. I'm afraid that I can't join the "Group Pounce" as The Pumpkin Witch called this sort of thing.

Writers have author surrogates more often than not. Dante's Inferno is the penultimate Classical example of this genre. And maybe the first one, come to think of it. That a sixteen year old girl is writing anything that is good enough to get published leaves me applauding her good luck and skill and wishing her the best, no matter what the genre might be or whether it involves author inserted fan fiction.

Good for her!!!

If you don't want to read the article (and I don't blame you for that), here's the rundown:

16-year-old girl writes a fanfic where her author-insertion persona is in a love triangle with two of the members of One Direction.

Said fanfic captures the attention of some publishing suits who were specifically looking for "a romantic YA novel that 'tapped into the current obsession with boy bands.'"

First 50 Shades of Gray (originally written as a Twilight fanfic) skyrockets to the top of the charts...now this? This shit needs to stop. Seriously...

Cue storm of cynicism about art/entertainment, One Direction hate, and "I don't want to live on this planet anymore" memes. Bring 'em on. I could really use the solidarity.
.
I wish publishing suits were looking for "fantasy horror that will conquer the adult and teenager audience alike", then I would be stinkin' rich.

*shrugs*

I wonder where they get that impression. Furthermore, they're making some really good money on this one.

Sooo...
When will we see the MLP fanfic Fallout:Equestria in stores? I'm sure it could be cut down/edited to the length of the Lord of The Rings trilogy.

Eh?

Stories about romance are inherently bad? Stories about boy bands are inherently bad? Stories written by young women are inherently bad?

Sure, I don't think it'll be good, but if it's less creepy than "Twilight", "50 Shades of Grey" or fucking "Save the Pearls", good luck to it.

I wish they were looking to publish the vague, rambling, disconnected web posts of an internet user, then I'd be stinkin' rich!

I think this is the main problem with the super connected world we live in, often it is no longer the great works that get recognition, but the most accessible.

Gaarghhh! I hate it when people decide to put self-insert characters into fan fiction!

Regardless, the fact that this is getting published is just depressing.

I know this is going to be extremely bitter but I am just being honest. This trend of making fan fiction into published works is just about the worst thing to happen to the writing industry in a LONG LONG time. It basically says don't bother writing quality characters in settings you spent time to create no no go rip off someone else or write fictitious stories about people slandering there names. That is what this is...

I mean I don't exactly have a buttload of respect for fan-fiction but I respected it enough to leave it alone. Sure fan fiction writers are to lazy or uninspired to create their own characters and worlds and get their following by piggybacking on the original authors hard work but at least they stayed non profit and kept to themselves. This 50 shades of grey and above are just huge huge insult to all artists from all mediums.

Sure I don't really care much about twilight but at least the author had the decency to write her own characters and story and not just rip someone off twist the original work into some softcore porn and resell it as her own.

People write what they know, and the only thing anyone can be said to know completely, is themselves, so most start there.

A lot of shafted and jealous writers in this thread. I won't read it, I won't enjoy, but goddamn, good for the teenager to publish a book. It had to have at least been coherent enough to be published.

Never because it uses two different IP's.

One is a children's genre (with an admittedly large periphery demographic)

The other is a post apocalypse setting.

Its a sad thing really, since due to Sturgeon's Law and the sheer amount of crap generated in the pit that is the internet there will be other works that while amazingly written, will never be published due to copyright laws.

Not everything can be as easily published like 50 Shades and now this, with just a few name changes needed to render copyright law mute.

As a defense, some Fanfiction can be quite unique. Take a look at "On the Wings of Dragons" for an example. It's a crossover fanfiction of Harry Potter and Dragonriders of Pern. It's rather good and is definitely a different take on both universes.

But no, I hate this trend because I like to read the occasional fanfic. It's mainly when I go through periods where it's hard for me to find enough things interesting to read at the local library, and I'm just in a mood to tear through stories.

The reason I hate these fanfic stories being sold is because it's making it so that the better fanfic writers have to watch their back, since a lot of authors don't quite like fan fiction. Usually this is because of legal things, though some feel as you do.

Yaaaa as hard as I can be on fan-fiction I wouldn't look down on anyone who reads or writes it. Being a good writer impresses me being a fan-fiction writer neither raises nor lowers my opinion of the person. Anywho my gf loves fan-fiction so I have had many discussions on the topic I still don't care for it. I may not like fan-fictions or have good feelings towards it but I generally leave it alone since it doesn't hurt anyone and makes people happy. However with this whole trend of getting it published I have as shown above a HUGE problem with that. I just know people try this crap with my fields all the time but at least they get what they have coming to them generally the fact that not only are people getting away with this for writers but are actually being encouraged disgusts me.

Have you considered self-publishing through e-books?

No, no OP, it does not need to stop!

Fifty Shades of Grey is one of my favorite books of all time! That shit's hilarious, and if this will result in even more unintentional comedy like that then I say with a wholehearted enthusiasm "bring it on!"

Considered, and immediately abandoned. Two reasons:

1) Self-publishing is an extremely slippery slope. Without proper advertising and a known name, book sales can and most likely will absolutely tank.

2) I do NOT like E-books. Nothing beats the feel of paper in your hands. E-books takes away the feel! The character! It deprives one of part of what makes book reading AWESOME!

Okay fine, maybe I will do e-books sometime, but I am most definitely not doing an e-book launch.

Well just keep in mind that e-books are cheaper and more accessible to your reader, and the times are a changing. If that isn't enough to sway you, suit yourself. You seem pretty adamant about not self-publishing so I bid you good luck :).
