And that was it. Civilization was fun while it lasted, but we got to call it quits here. Everyone back to their caves, grow your beards cause winter is comming. Tomorrow we'll hunt for mammoth.

I seem to be a purist with my reading. If I'm reading into a world, I want it to be written by the same Author. Hence why I won't touch the last Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Galaxy novel.

Likewise with fanfic. I don't care.
I don't even enjoy ironically reading bad things because I don't read much anyway and have awful experience of reading boring books. So I am elitist with the books I do read.

Eh, if there's demand for it then let it be published: it's not up to me to decide that the (probably) millions of people who purchased 50 Shades should go without. It doesn't stop me reading books that I enjoy.

Now, back to reading The Three Musketeers and pretending I'm d'Artagnan. Now, all those years of fencing didn't go to waste: I'm a French badass =D

Who made 50 Shades of Grey so popular?

People who don't normally read; it being badly written didn't register on them, maybe even appealed to them because the conventions of good literary writing don't appeal to them, and that's understandable, that's human variety.

This might do the same thing, ultimately it makes no difference because it makes little difference to the smaller publishers that actually publish decent things, or larger publishers like Penguin who continue to exist without pandering to the other markets, to both groups get what they want.

No one 'deserves' success more than anyone else.

I take offense to that.

But yeah... I've had one tiny publication, for which I was not paid.

When (and if) I get my first real break with a publication, as overjoyed as I'll be, this and 50 Shades are going to be stuck at the back of my mind, snidely whispering 'who cares? It's not like it takes any talent!'

Dear America

We apologise for One Direction, but you gave us Backstreet Boys, so we are all square now.

Sincerly Britain
Along with Justin Bieber from Canada, it seems the former colonies are exporting their horrible things. Now it's australia's turn. Maybe they'll export something relatively benign... like bullet ants or the blue ringed octopus.

...What.

This is depressing. I've read plenty of great fanfiction that deserve to be published (maybe as fan novels, I dunno)... but instead, we get the shitty self-insert romance because it's "what's popular now".

I need a fucking drink...

Personally I found this to be pretty damn funny. I honestly feel sorry for the guys in the band. Even though I don't like their music I don't think anyone should be subjected to being a part of some BL fanfiction. Normally it's ok-ish because only a few people actively read fanfics of this nature, but now that's a book, many more people will read and buy into the crap.

I really think his just serves to remind us how insane the publishing industry is these days From games to books to music and film the most asinine things seem to be getting greenlit, and twisted sexual author insertion fanfics are the latest trend of what's wrong with the universe

Yeah, it is kind of frustrating, but here's the problem. Experiencing a piece of art that is deep and meaningful is hard work.

Really, it is. Think about it. How did you feel the last time you finished reading or watching something that was genuinely deep and meaningful? You probably felt a little exhausted (emotionally, that is). Maybe you needed to take a couple hours to really come to terms with what you just experienced. You took a long walk, and stared at the sunset.
well theres "deep and meaningful" and then theres "a certain level of quality" <-50 shades fails on that level...which is actually kind of scary in how it could "lower the bar"

its not just a bad book...its a certain level of bad that really shouldnt be acceptible in professional publishing
That's a bit like saying McDonalds is a level of bad that shouldn't be acceptable in food services. There are certain kinds of "bad"that people still enjoy. And besides, there's also the possibility that they're not reading it for the same reason one reads Oscar Wilde or Shakespeare.

Personally, I think Fanfiction to Novels can be a great idea but only if it were implemented properly.

For example, I was once considering writing a "fanfiction" of sorts that would act as a semi-sequel/anti-thesis to Atlas Shrugged. I liked to call the title simply "Prometheus" (In honor of the greek mythological hero that was tortured for acting against the cruel Gods and bringing fire to man) and it would be my attempt at confronting all of the Objectivist "Morals" and reestablishing why Altruism and self-sacrifice are truly heroic/just morals.

I've written a few lines of it already, usually responding to some quotes from Atlas Shrugged, though answering them in as altruistic a way as I can.

"If you saw Atlas, the giant who holds the world on his shoulders, if you saw that he stood, blood running down his chest... his knees buckling, his arms trembling, but still trying to hold the world with the last of his strength... What would you tell him to do?"

"I would tell him to pass this burden onto me.

"But you'd be crushed! You'll suffer for years, then you'll die! You'll do all that just for a world that doesn't give two shits about you!"

"Atlas thought the same, then someone from that world that 'didn't give two shits about him' freed him from that burden."

"You're hedging all your hopes that, someday, someone will come along and relieve you too? That's not going to happen! None of these moochers are going to destroy themselves just to help you!"

"I'm not hedging my hopes that someone will come around to save me. I plan to be stronger than Atlas. I plan to take the world, hold it above my shoulders, and take a step forward."
And then I respond "Any idiot who is arrogant enough to think himself stronger than Atlas deserves to be crushed by the weight of the world".

That is the exact reason why "deep and meaningful" doesn't move units. People can't handle those kinds of experiences often enough for really literary stuff to be successful in the mainstream; they've got too much other shit to deal with. When people reach for media, most of the time, they just want to tune out and slide into a world that's comfortable and enjoyable. They don't want to take on even more emotional weight from some outside source that doesn't give a damn about them. They don't want to have their paradigm suddenly shifted underneath their feet while they try to catch their breath from a long day. They don't want to realize that their entire life is a hollow, empty farce when it's already hard enough to convince themselves to get up in the morning. They want to forget about their troubles for a while, so they can recover their strength and get back to dealing with their own goddamn problems.

And by the way, when I say "they", I include myself.

Yeah, I have news for you: You're not everyone. Some people need a daily dose of drama, their rush, their fix, their emotional "high" that they can't get in real life. Some people will watch an entire season of Battlestar Galactica or Prison Break in a single sitting because it's more interesting than balancing spreadsheets for 8 hours a day.
A fair point, but I, personally, wouldn't classify BSG or Prison Break as "deep and meaningful" experiences. Quality entertainment, yes, but I don't think they're going to start a revolution in politics or restructure how you look at the world.

Who cares? People like what they like. If you like Fan-fiction based novels then read Fan-fiction based novels. If you don't then don't read them.

I am sure fanfiction is enjoyable to write and read for a lot of people and I have no reason to shit on that. I can just choose to not read it. I am only saying this because I know the amount of hate that will be flled in this topic.

It is interesting. It isn't something I ever thought I would see published, it is like legitimizing copying in a way. I don't mean that in a insulting way. This has been done for years. Think of those Star Wars novels all written by different novelists. That isn't really much different. They may have been done better however, using fictional characters and expanding on a already created universe.
