One-Fifth of PS3 Owners Are Eyeing the Exit

I sincerely hope this will be the end of Sony, or at the very least torpedo them badly enough to go down when the sharks start circling. The OP said this could cost Sony $24 billion; according to this [http://finance.yahoo.com/q/is?s=SNE+Income+Statement&annual], their gross profit last year was about $17 billion, their net profit was a loss of $437 million (with the last time they turned a net profit being three years ago and even then it was only $3 billion), and their cash flow was only $5.6 billion, with most of that being financing activities and depreciation. Unfortunately, they've also got $44 billion in current assets and $137 in total assets, so they might be able to get the money to absorb the loss by wiping out much of their cash reserves and the like, or by selling off more long-term assets. It'll still leave them that much closer to failing, though, and I think we can all agree that that is a good thing. One less evil old media company propping up the RIAA and other such bullshit organisations, after all.

Why? WHY!? They're working to get it up,they fucked up, so what? If it happened to microsoft what would happen?

As I explained in another thread this has "Bank Job Fallout" written all over it. Everyone sees the job, everyone sees the criminal get past the defenses and everyone sees that they make it look a bit easy. So everyone acts like it's the end of the world, talks about how they've been cheated (despite it being the first time that bank is ever robbed) and goes on to sue or leave.

What they don't see are the months of planning that had to go into the criminal's attempt, the information that had to be gathered, etc...

People don't even know if SONY's defenses were good or shitty yet and they're simply yelling "HOW FUCKING DARE YOU!?" as if this has happened every year since the PS1 was released 11 years ago. Once in 11 years is actually a fucking good run.

Yeah, I'm pissed it happened to me too, but people are over reacting. People swinging the litigation hammer, claiming to represent us all (Fuck you, no you don't represent me) thinking they can rush SONY into doing a better job if they scare them with litigation.

Let me tell you something. Make SONY focus on a court case AND this and it'll go slower.
The whole point is that it didn't happen to microsoft, and until it does, Sony screwed up, big time.
Ah, so the hacker simply decided to attack SONY instead of Microsoft, a company in all likelihood the same would have happened to, and so SONY screwed up. I do love how everyone is acting like SONY only had a firewall in place between us and their data. If that were the case, they'd have been hacked years ago (the PSN I mean, not cracked consoles). We don't know their security levels. No point in acting like it's the world's end
Yeah, because hacking the free Online service is smarter than hacking the online service on which about 50% of the users have their credit card information typed in... The only LOGICAL reason to attack sony instead of microsoft is because sony must have had a weaker security, this isn't even debatable.
How about the fact that SONY sued a hacker not a few weeks ago? Maybe someone wanted to teach SONY a lesson? This is debatable. It's being discussed throughout the entire thread right now. And sure, you can attack Microsoft, but would you fear the litigation of SONY, or would you fear the litigation of the company headed by the computer giant and second richest man in the world bill gates? Hmmm

There are MANY factors to consider. Sony is a smaller target, their security isn't necessarily any poorer, but they ARE a slightly smaller target. So yes, this is debatable

I just got put on probation for stating exactly this but in I guess less polite terms.

I can't believe you're the second person to realise that this article is ridiculous.
Off topic: Yeah, I've noticed around here even if you are polite but disagree with the writer of the article you can get put on probation, or accused of being a troll. Guess the readers around here love to spam that report button and it seems sometimes the moderation staff don't bother to weigh the report in context before the iron fist comes down.

I like the array of news articles posted on the site, but this forum and a majority of it's more vocal users seem to be highly intolerant of intelligent debate before the one sided rage is thrown at you.

On topic: Perhaps I'm the second, maybe the third, but it hasn't stopped the naysayers from accusing us of being bad at math and knowing nothing about statistics and therefore our argument is null and void. I don't care what anyone else says, no one is going to convince me that 184 people is representative of 1/5 the U.S.'s PS3 owners. which likely numbers in the hundreds of thousands, if not millions.

Off topic again: Has anyone else noticed the growing number of these sensationalist news articles cropping up on this website? It's even worse when the majority of the readers here take it for face value.

I will not be one of those people, for the record. There is more to a console than its online functions.

You are absolutely right on every count. Especially the latter, every article is sensationalised and every article at the moment seems geared towards starting some kind of sony/microsoft debate.

This article annoys me as it is rubbish, I may have expressed myself rather angrily and perhaps deserved a probation but to be honest this isn't journalism.

And Escapist are you really that dumb to believe this from those figures?? I'm sorry but to any statiticians out there surely anyone with a degree of logic would ask alot of questions about the sample and how it was conducted. Why 2132 people? Someone explain that number for a start. This article gives random figures and concludes 1/5 of all playstation owners want to move console.

I'm sorry but there is no way a statistician can justify from those numbers that the claim one fifth of ps3 owners in the US are eyeing the exit.

Meanwhile in PC land...

Snip.
*cough*PCSX2*cough*

It's actually NOT illegal because you have to use your own PS2's BIOS, which basically just means your PS2 is in your PC. Doesn't do anything crazy except bumping the resolution a tad. FFX looks quite nice on a PC, with initial/normal settings. Persona 4's the same.
Thanks for the info. Will look into it.

I wonder if this will cause ps3 titles like jak and daxter or rachet and clank to release for xbox due the companies losing a ton of customers (please I hope so)

I was given no email. I don't think I sighed up for their letter but... I'm pretty sure hey have my email and seeing as I have bought things on there and have an account are they not kind of legally( or at the least logically or morally) obligated to tell me this shit without me having to hear about ti via gaming websites?
I don't believe that. Sony will have sent an email, not because they are morally obligated, but because they legally are. You dont think the second they found out what was going on they werent thinking- "OH SHIT! SOMEONE HURRY I NEED SOME ADVICE ABOUT WHAT TO DO RIGHT NOW!" The first thing any lawyer would have told them is- "Tell the customers." Which they did. They emailed them all. you wont convince me that I- I who have NOT signed up for any newsletter, and rarely buy things off of PSN- Got chosen to get a special email while others didnt.

Heh I would never go to Microsoft and since I never buy DLC for any game this really has little effect on me. But would be sad to see Sony die, I've had their consoles since I was like 8.
