My 360 still gathers dust.

A minuscule chance of going through the inconvenience of having money taken out of bank account by fraudsters, or a near guarantee that your console will break down and die.

hmm, I think Sony still win here. Unless you are one of those people who keeps trading in consoles and buying them back six months later.

True story-

My roomie bought a PS3. We both enjoyed the system's growing library of games and contributed to a decent sized collection of games, peripherals and upgrades. However, the system began having problems (red light ones) shortly after it was upgraded to a higher memory capacity. We sent it off to SONY for repairs, saving a copy of our new hard drive for data back-up. His system was returned... sort of... with the receipt for the $200 maintenance bill and the notice that there was basically nothing wrong with it, but they replaced it for us anyways. *eyebrow arcs* With said new system, our hard drive was now useless as it wanted to re-format the drive and delete all our save data, literally solid months of gaming, down the toilet. All complaints to SONY were met with shrugs of whoop de whoop and "sorry for any inconvenience". We could get our trophies... -ahem- ...but that was about it. So we now had a large black brick in the living room which did nothing but piss us off to look at it. A month later someone broke into the apartment and stole it and all the games and blue rays anyways...

Now we are an XBox household, and now that I've changed my credit card info from that defunct account, I am happy for that factoid.

This is pretty ridiculous to me.
I mean, I'm considering never using PSN again, but straight up getting rid of my PS3 and buying a new console? No thanks. Considering this event hasn't cost me any money so far, I don't know why I'd want to run out and drop $300. That's not even considering all the PS3/2/1 games I have for my PS3 that would go to waste.

PSN being down hasn't really bothered me since i've been doing other stuff lately, but even if PSN did screw up even more and fail completely i would just sell my 360 which i don't even use to buy a better PC

To be honest...if you store your credit card information online for anyone to get hold of no matter what, it's your own fault.

Also, what was that other story about people hacking into Call of Duty and getting people to pay for their profiles back? Or that guy who hacked into the Xbox Live Moderator's profile? The entire internet is extremely hackable, it's just a shame that Sony has ended up taking a big hit.

It could happen to any internet site. If I were an internet hacker..I'd use it to hack Amazon or Ebay, I bet theres more money on access through there.

I'm an Xbox/PC guy myself, but what the hell is with this "us vs them" attitude? You're not prevented by some law from owning both consoles at once, theres absolutely no damn reason buying a 360 means you can't play PS3 anymore.

I won't be selling my PS3. The 360 annoys me (you need to pay for online gameplay, I find the controller far too bulky for me (main problem) and I still don't know if the Red Ring of Death is still an issue). My PC is also 7 years old and upgrading it going to be very expensive...since it's still a single-core processor in it XD

I doubt I'll get a 360 instead. I probably will be building a new pc pretty soon though.
*SIGH* In a perfect world... Everyone would be thinking this.
IDK. In a perfect world I think we would've had three consoles that are both well built and get good support on top of the pc option. My wife does most of her gaming on the pc so I was using the ps3 mostly.
I like having options but this gens console options have been pretty lackluster. MS & Sony both tried doing/promising too much when this really was the first to bring the online component into the norm. The ps3 is a pretty robust machine and if sony had properly supported itnot only would they not be having this problem but it probably wouldn't even be a target for hackers to begin with.

And see, it's exaggerations like this that are bothering me. Yeah sure, there's a difference between a vault (or locked door) and a hole with a sheet over it, but I'd hardly call it a sheet. Again, BASED on SONY's desire to rebuild it from the ground up, they might simply be changing a few things. Placing the information in new areas while they rebuild. Someone out there knows how to hack them. If Sony simply changes procedure, then the information is still stored the same way. Now if someone talks, someone else hacks them, they can still get away with a transaction or two or a BIT of personal information before being caught.

Unless we know what their security is, exactly how their security is, exagerations aren't really getting us places
Nor are we going to get anywhere by going light on a multi-national corporation who should have had a better handle on things. Sony has given us absolutely no reason to assume that they're competent.

I would have thought 100% would consider switching systems. You'd be a blind fool not to consider it. Whatever your decision is.
Im glad that you actually chose your words very carefully.

Well, I currently own all the current gen platforms, and play on my PC from time to time, so there's nothing for me to "switch" to. Will I abandon Sony and sell my PS3 though? No. I still play it offline, and I used those point cards and never gave them my credit card info. I'm not happy about my personal info getting out, but I tend not to get pissed about shit like this until something actually happens to me.... which I hope doesn't happen. In retrospect, I do kind of wish I had done what I do when I make an email account or something and just given phony info. I mean, it's not like they'd have any reason to verify the info, so I guess it wouldn't have hurt. Oh well, what's done is done.

How is someone hacking their servers Sony's fault?

I just think a lot of people are whining about canceling a credit card. It's annoying but not life changing.

And I like my PS3 as much as I like my 360, my DS, even my PSP. I'm not going to stop using an entire line of products because some asshole decided to put his 1337 hax0rz skillz to test and succeeded.

In what particular way. I'm not sure whether I should be pleased or disheartened. At the moment I'm both and it hurts.
Some people would look at your comment and think you would be insulting if you didn't put down the word: consider.
I would of been fairly annoyed if you didn't type that word.
Most people on the internet in general type without thinking but this website has people that actually think about what they say, I like that.

I'll be putting serious thought into having a PC custom built. As much as I like the PS3, it could probably be understood how pissed off I am at the minute.

Why? WHY!? They're working to get it up,they fucked up, so what? If it happened to microsoft what would happen?

As I explained in another thread this has "Bank Job Fallout" written all over it. Everyone sees the job, everyone sees the criminal get past the defenses and everyone sees that they make it look a bit easy. So everyone acts like it's the end of the world, talks about how they've been cheated (despite it being the first time that bank is ever robbed) and goes on to sue or leave.

What they don't see are the months of planning that had to go into the criminal's attempt, the information that had to be gathered, etc...

People don't even know if SONY's defenses were good or shitty yet and they're simply yelling "HOW FUCKING DARE YOU!?" as if this has happened every year since the PS1 was released 11 years ago. Once in 11 years is actually a fucking good run.

Yeah, I'm pissed it happened to me too, but people are over reacting. People swinging the litigation hammer, claiming to represent us all (Fuck you, no you don't represent me) thinking they can rush SONY into doing a better job if they scare them with litigation.

Let me tell you something. Make SONY focus on a court case AND this and it'll go slower.
The whole point is that it didn't happen to microsoft, and until it does, Sony screwed up, big time.
Ah, so the hacker simply decided to attack SONY instead of Microsoft, a company in all likelihood the same would have happened to, and so SONY screwed up. I do love how everyone is acting like SONY only had a firewall in place between us and their data. If that were the case, they'd have been hacked years ago (the PSN I mean, not cracked consoles). We don't know their security levels. No point in acting like it's the world's end
Yeah, because hacking the free Online service is smarter than hacking the online service on which about 50% of the users have their credit card information typed in... The only LOGICAL reason to attack sony instead of microsoft is because sony must have had a weaker security, this isn't even debatable.

Gosh... the console war debate again!
Gamers are so predictable.
Why anyone cares I own a PS3 and not a Xbox?
I don't mind that you play on PC or enjoy your 3DS?
You obviously found the right gaming platform.
Mine is the PS3. That's it.
In my leaving room, playing whatever game on my PS3 I don't care what console you own.
It doesn't change a thing to my appreciation of the game.
The PSN Security Breach... yup sh*t happens.
