Like everything else on the internet, it's all talk. People like to exaggerate everything on the internet. Company sent you a defective product? Worst company ever. Xbox RROD'd? Worst console ever, gonna go get a PS3. PSN down? Sony sucks the big one and is, of course, PS3 is the worst console ever.

Are some people REALLY so naive that they would think because of some screw up, which will ultimately affect no one who actually cares enough to take precautionary measures after this breach, that we will simply give up on the franchises that most of us have been following for 3 generations of consoles, from PS1 to 3?

I buy Sony because they have the games I care about. I don't give a hoot about Mario or Halo or Metroid or Zelda or Gears of War or any of that stuff. I care about franchises like Metal Gear Solid, Uncharted, Killzone, and so on.

Am I miffed that this happened? Heck yes. Do I think Sony could have done better? Certainly. But ultimately, this is all happening because Sony decided to stick up for me, the legit user who actually pays for his games instead of cracking his system to pirate, and also plays fair and doesn't crack his system to run modified software to cheat, while sticking it to the homebrewers, who, argue as you will for what they might have in mind, are ultimately the ones who make everything that the pirates and cheaters do possible in the first place. PSP being the shining example of what the homebrewers who supposedly look out for the end users interests can do to a platform. IF you've ever tried to play a PSP game online, you'll know what I'm talking about.

So if Sony pisses off the hackers, I support them. I believe as gamers we have a right to be free from exposure to cheaters and pirates. And developers have a right to profit from their products and protect them from those who would destroy the security protecting their intellectual property.

I have two playstation systems, original and PSOne, a fat playstation 2, and an original fat 60 gig launch model PS3. I own a PSP-2000 slim and light. I fully intend to purchase an NGP when it's available. I have about 1000$ worth of purchased software for the systems. I am a loyal customer, and if these hacker pricks think that this little stunt is gonna let them win and get me to change sides, then they are sadly mistaken.

I would laugh a lot if these people switched, just to have the Xbox bombarded with the same treatment.

Well I have both :D

And I never used my PS3 for much besides films and offline games anyway...

oh well... time to go play on my perfectly functional Xbox 360.

edit: but yeah, if you want your fix of JRPGs then the PC isn't really the best place to be.
Hell, you want your fix of ANYTHING Japanese, PC really isn't the best place to be.

Shame, really. Japan just really hates the PC, it seems.
Well, we'll always have Touhou and Recettear.
Oh and the Raiden games came out in Japan on PC; Those are always fun!

I'm sticking to the PSN. I know it's a bad fuck-up, but it's not like it's their fault.

The weakness of all surveys is that it's easier to state an idea than to carry it out. It's why Lib Dems always poll better than they perform. I doubt many people will spend the money and most people will just get over it

A friend of mine just had his PayPal messed with. Someone added an email address to his account and authorized a $75 payment. Not sure if it's because if this breach, but he does have a PSN account tied to the same e-mail. This is bad. I don't want to see PlayStations go under just because of tragic mistake (oh and HACKERS), but I can't blame folks for wanting to switch. Sony's going to have a long, hard battle winning back people's confidence.

Well good job Geohotz.

By giving others the capability to break the law you've succeeded in hurting a major corporation. Go burn in hell.

Perhaps Sony could've done better but that doesn't exempt him of what he did. He let this happen with his innocent little, "Oh I can't control what people do with it." Fuck you. Fuck you Geo and die.
You do realise he only messed with the hardware right? I'm no expert with these things, but I'm pretty sure he didn't anything that could help people hack PSN.
He messed with the hardware and released the code to give people full access on how to mod their PS3s. From an old news report people could mod their consoles into giving them priveledges they shouldn't have that would only be reserved for developers and Sony themselves.

His fault.
So, information on how to mod a console=ability to hack into PSN and steal identities? Shit...better stop playing KOTOR over Steam. After all, that game has been modded, so a hacker could use the game to access my account information on Steam!
Yes, the ability to mod the console into faking a high level of authority equals that. Simple. The thing that's up for debate is how secure that data was after the code was made available. But after running the PSN with little to no issues for years it seems Sony wasn't fast enough to adapt to it.

All stemming from Geo releasing the code in the first place.

PSNers should be sueing him not Sony.

I have all consoles. So yeah.

Although of my consoles, 360 is the least played. Because the console itself is just a piece of shit.

Its hardly surprising, the PS3 was never looked upon as the superior console in comparison to the 360 (either equal or weaker),
I'd be very interested in seeing your reasoning for that.

PS3 had a blueray drive, a greater hard drive capacity built in, Recharable controllers and wireless connectivity all as standard. When the 360 was released it didn't have any of that. While I'll accept the programming language is meant to be easier for programmers to use, I think the other aspects more that make up for programming u=issues which don't really affect the end user. I know you can get wireless/recharable now for the xbox, but when it came out you couldn't and the hard drive was an external attachment.

This was the end result. This was the people who already allowed themselves to be corralled into a concentration camp being slaughtered.
Did you just compare a network-outage and possible stolen information to a god damn concentration camp?!

As in there people are treated like shit, killed, tortured, starved, etc during a time of war?

Seriously?
