At this time I'd like to point out that the 360 is a gaming console! And therefore doesn't actually need a web browser. I don't even use the one on my Wii, if I want to go on the Internet I use my PC, kinda like I'm doing right now.

actually itmakes sense,
they just want to make lots of money
and they are
i mean its the only console that has actually MADE a company money, te others just REMADE it
and its the only without a web browser
what a coincidence

If "owning the Internet" was my goal, then the XBox 360 would make a poor choice of weapons indeed. I don't doubt that Microsoft would like to have more control over the Internet, and have more ways of leveraging the places they have a tech foothold into making money from others' access of the 'Net. But even in the places where they do have a greater presence- such as web browsers, OSs, and Java- they really haven't exactly been tyrannical, and in the cases where they've stepped out of line, they've been slapped down, one way or another.

I'm sorry Microsoft, but...
*lowers in Mission Impossible style*
...the internet is mine.

Seriously, though, as someone in this thread said earlier, didn't Microsoft help end the whole "walled garden" model of the internet?

Microsoft is all about making money?! Breaking news, everybody! Tell your friends!

Seriously. I don't understand why people go "OMFTASDFJIOASF M$$$$$" because they want to make money. That's the goal of the game here. Every company wants, needs, and seeks to earn money. Thinking otherwise is completely bass-ackwards.
Because Microsoft is being extra-extra-extra hyper greedy.
I mean, you have to pay $60 just to get online on a 360 every year, why not just make the 360 a fucking MMORPG with different maps that are entirely different games and instead of buying games you buy a CD Key which you enter slowly and then the map is unlocked for you.

Why the hell would you need a web browser on a console anyway!?

If you're on XBL it's almost a guarantee you have a computer.

I don't really care, it's like giving the Xbox 360 a calculator feature, so many things already have it that you don't need your 360 to have it.

I can get a browser on my Itouch, my cell phone, my desktop, my laptop, my DSi, why would I want one cluttering up my 360?
I thought the same thing until I used the browser on my PS3.
Really? I think the same thing after using the browser on my PS3, then glancing over to my PC and wondering what the fuck was I doing.
"Own the internet" is one of the craziest things I've read in recent memory though. It's like saying "Sony's initial vision was to make the PS3 the only media player in the planet".

Maybe that's only in America, and if so, I'm not to thrilled about the thought police coming into my house and repossessing my freedom of the internet.
First off, check your facts better.

Secondly, despite what many people seem to think, access to the internet is not a fundamental right or freedom in most countries.

No surprise here, Its in the Interest of EVERY major corporation to controll market share as much as possiblem whatever the market may be . More money to feed the shareholders and line the suits pockets . This Is not new , not specific to any particular media or international Trade system in Existence.
I only hope regulation and strict laws about free market and media exists in our future.
Not very likely tho while the world continues to melt down on Fiat currency and unregulated capitalism. Lol

Worse than no web browser, I put a copy of Super Mario Galaxy and Metal Gear Solid 4 into my 360 and neither would play and it wouldn't recognize my Wiimote. Why it seems like Microsoft only wants me to play their games and use their controllers. The bastards. Don't they realize that for every dollar in profit they make three orphans are killed and made into dog food? They need to be more like Apple who (besides being loved by the media) never worries about the bottom line and makes sure people have choices as to what they want to use with their products.

Is it just me or does Michael Pachter need to STFU? Where did that guy come from anyway? Wouldn't surprise me if it was just some guy who put on a tie and started acting like he knew stuff.

Either he's just stating the obvious or he's making predictions based on stuff that he supposedly knows that end up not coming true (but somehow people seem to forget about that and keep listening to him).

I'm starting to think the only reason he's there is that we feel comfortable with a guy in a tie talking about video games. It's like: "Hey, look! We have some guy who calls himself industry analyst, now gaming is officially serious and totally not for kids anymore". Like we need him, not to make bullshit predictions, but to make us take ourself seriously and make up excuses for something that doesn't need making up excuses for in the first place!

I agree with Pachter that most games will continue to be released on discs (on consoles at least) because of his comment about the lack of internet connectivity but also because of the fact that many games take up large amounts of space on hard-drives and if every game was released as a download the amount of games that could be stored on the hard-drive would be very low. So unless cloud gaming services like onlive become popular physical discs will remain the norm for at least the next 15-20 years. But I didn't need Pachter to tell me that, as it (and practically everything he says is obvious to anyone who knows about the gaming community.

Well, that's not at all a very biased opinion...

However I have never looked at it that way before, but whatever, I don't really see the need for an internet browser on an Xbox anyway.
