Almost two weeks ago, I got a septum piercing. The reaction to it has been... mixed... to say the least, due to the fact that it's a very uncommon piercing around here.

In the time between getting the piercing and right now, I've noticed something strange. In school, teachers seem more suspicious of me. I don't know how to explain it without rambling but basically they seem to be less trusting of me, generally much less willing to hear what I have to say, etc. Outside of school, when I go into shops, security guards seem to watch me more closely than usual. Only two days ago, I was in Tesco to kill about 15 minutes until I got picked up by my friend and I couldn't help but notice that a security guard was hovering near me anywhere I went. I'm beginning to think that people are associating piercings with trouble in general.

What's your opinion? What do you think when you see someone with unusual piercings (ie. not ears or navel)?

EDIT:

That's a septum piercing. Mine is smaller though.

Why would you want to get that pierced? Blah, kids these days with their piercings and their rap moosic and their reality Tee Vee...

I guess people just associate uncommon piercings with the 'bad boy', just like Tatoos.

Where did you pierce yourself? Which body part, I mean.

Personally, I'd never do it. Just not into it. I find it disgusting.

Septum. The bit of cartilage between my nostrils.

I guess the only thing I think is that this person is not very concerned with what the masses think about traditional beauty and are probabaly free thinkers. Or I think they like to kick ass or want to look like they like to kick ass.

However, except for ears I can't stand the way piercings look on people. For women I think its covers up their natural beauty and is distracting.

To every man their own I guess.

You can't have been completely ignorant to the societal views on piercings though. Earings, Ok. Lots of earings, you're pushing it. Anywhere on the face, 'bad boy'. One would think you'd see this kind of thing coming to at least the slightest extent.

Your body, your choice. I'm a dude, and I have ear piercings. Even with just those people will look at you differently. But, I'm secure enough that I don't need to worry about what people think about me. I don't look at anyone differently if they have piercings. Unless its a piercing...down under. Those are a bit of a head-scratcher for me.

I've had both ears pierced since I was a kid but that's as far as I'd go. The whole pierce anything craze is only appropriate on aboriginal tribe members to designate their rite of passage. Anyone else is just a poseur IMO that will one day regret said decision.

That being said, what you do to your own body is your business but expect the kind of reaction you're seeing and accept it as a consequence.

For future reference: [link] http://www.vidalocatattoo.co.uk/images/piercing/septum%20piercing.jpg[/link]that's the piercing the OP got.

I got an eyebrowpiercing a while back, but I mostly got positive reactions. Maybe one or two people were a bit negative, but they were generally opposed to piercings. A septum piercing is pretty uncommon and it doesn't surprise me that some people think that because you got that piercing, you must have a certain attitude about you. An attitude they may not like. This isn't neccesarilly true (it probably isn't) but that IS the image you give yourself.

Or am I just rambling about now?

I've got a ring in my left nostril, but I haven't noticed people treating me any differently because of it... though, maybe that's just because people seemed to shun and distrust me even before that.

I only react to one kind of piercings:

<spoiler=This kind>http://www.inklinedtattooz.com/images/canada-tattoo/piercing-lip-120.jpg

If you have a piercing like that, I will automatically assume that you are an idiot. I mean... it looks like a metal zit (no offence, but that's really all I see)

It's an old sterotype unfortaly. You can't seam to escape it. Appenrtly, anyone with a perciceing or a tatto is troubble.

Personly I think this a stupid Idea. As for me, I've got my lip perced and I'm due to get a chest peace and side peace Tatto.. If pepoe look at you funny, they have the problem...

I don't speak to anyone around here who has a piercing so I've never heard of or seen any bad reactions until now. Perhaps that makes me ignorant but oh well. I'm the first girl in my school to get a non-ear piercing so that may been a factor. It just surprised me how badly some people reacted.

I knew someone who got their clavicle pierced. Ouch. But no, I don't judge people based on piercings or tats. Everybody has a different way of expressing themselves.

I've seen this happen though. I know a guy who is six foot four, has long black hair that falls to his waist, and has more piercings than I can count. People cross the street when they see him. But I think he's more polite than anyone else I know. He's the first person to call if you are in a jam.

Ignore the security and such. While they are watching you, some girl in a nice cardigan and pleated slacks is robbing them blind.

They are often associated with people who do illegal activities, probably because piercings are such a taboo thing among youths (parents forbidding it and all that). One thing I don't get is why some I know want me to get an eyebrow piercing. They say that along with my dreadlocks and possibly a bandana, I would look "badass". I'm thinking about it sometimes, but I often shake it off as a bad decision. But hey, it's not like I won't be caught at the airports and accused of caring drugs already. At least that's my assumption. I look more out of picture than most people, with my boots, my dreads, and incredibly white complexion.

It is a stereotype, and an inaccurate one at that. I know what thieves look like because I know a few. They do not have extreme piercings for the most part.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
really it goes back to the whole, look evil must be evil thing, its like pretty much any disney movie around you can automaticly tell who the villan is by appearance, people still have the stereotype of the look of someone associated with being bad

Ah yes, the bigotry of the previous generations. Hell, even my generation (I'm 35) stereotypes piercings and tattoos-though, not as badly. Personally, I think they're sexy on the ladies. Just try to ignore the ignorant as best you can; I would be pissed if I were followed around stores though so hopefully you're more patient than me.

Off topic: I remember you had that "Gonna be homeless" thread a little while ago-if you don't mind my asking, how's that going?
Fortunately I am a fairly patient person so it doesn't bother me all that much, but it did get me some funny looks from other people in the store.

off-topiccc: I've been staying at my best friend's house since then, got a job and stuff. Haven't spoke to my mum since. Bad times but oh well. :)

Anyways, Piercings at a younger age tend to show... more of a rebelious attitude, Which is something people in authority need to be wary of.

I think that piercings are fine. You just have to find people who don't think it's a big deal. Unfortunately, septum piercings are the least accepted daily seen piercings. If people don't accept you because of the piercing, call them out, don't back down, and go all the way on the offensive.

Most of my friends are fine with it. A lot of them actually think I suit it, which is grand. But there's more than a handful of people in school who insist on saying "THAT'S FUCKIN' DISGUSTIN'!" when they see me. That's always funtimes. :)
