I have recently discovered Pirate Metal(after getting interested in Metal this past year, and so far think its (for want of a better word) pretty cool. So far my favorite band in the subgenre is Alestorm. (Ill try attach a link).. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIgDq_xnhDA
So dear escapists,
Have you heard of Pirate Metal?
What do you think of it?
Any band recommendations?

I've heard of this Pirate Metal and I will keep my Viking Metal on the tops of my playlists. Vikings are better pirates, anyways. They employ the method of the ninjas - often appearing out of the fog to attack a village by surprise, then leave with everything.

I like it, though I like most metal. Try Running Wild if you are looking for piratey metal recomendations. The Ballad of William Kidd is a great song of theirs.

That song is on an awesome album all must listen and get it wherever possible. They are great in their own right and would be great still even if they didn't bother with a theme.

Also if people are talking about more themed stuff you could try Tyr. Viking Metal if it insists on having a genre.

Eh, yeah, I've been listening to Alestorm for a loong time, and I really like them.

I do agree with Novskij, though.

To be fair it happens in every genre. Acid rock, Stoner rock, Trip hop, psytrance and the list goes on and on of sub genres that have only minor differences.

Yeah, but its just easier to say Pirate Metal rather than, power metal with pirate themed lyrics, Pirate Metal sounds a bit more exotic.

OP. I love Alestorm, and regardless of what people think, they do sound Piratey, my mum heard me playing them over the computer, and she said they reminded her of Pirates, and she didnt even know how they were or thats the sound they were going for.

Keelhauled is my fav song btw, and theres an official video, rather than the link you posted.

Korpiklaani They have some great battle metal songs. Not pirate metal I know but it's in a similar vain. Their song Cottages and Saunas is genius. Sorry my ability to imbed video's always goes wrong so here's a link.

You mean folk-metal :p

Our band was offered a support slot with Alestorm. We agreed to it but never got the call. Really unfortunate, would have been very awesome. I do like Alestorm a lot but I do find their material too repetitive. And the lyrics are a bit too cheesy for my liking. Mind you, I only ever bought their first album and haven't checked out their, what, 3 since then?

Great to sing along to, especially when it's about wenches. Set sail, get drunk and hammer some wenches.

As much as I hate the 20 word emo sub-genres, you can't say a genre isn't real because, all they really does is help describe the band. I know it never used to be that important and it was ok to label bands just under "metal" or "rock", but there's so much more music nowadays that it's almost essential to label as sub-genres.

I enjoy Ninja Metal more, i.e. silent, mute - but deadly.

It plays in a subtle bass tone that makes virgin ears shit themselves.
