Charmander all the way. No question. Why? Because ultimately dragon, end of discussion.

Of course, I got to the point where all I needed was my overleveled Persian to take out my friends' legendaries at the school lunch table, but he and my Charizard were a tagteam to be feared.

Everyone knows Piplup is the best starter because he evolves into Empoleon

and Empoleon is best:

Also Piplup can learn peck. He is the only water starter naturally capable of having a move super effective against grass types.

Also, Charizard is undeniably rad, and I'm not sure if the research takes that into account.
one of the great failings of science is that it rarely takes "rad" into account. For shame.

You damn right Charizard is rad as hell.

How rad?

Companionship, protection, transportation AND breakfast? Truly the greatest,

Squirtle squad forever baby.

Anyhow, I've thought for a long time that Squirtle was the greatest starter. Why?
He can learn Ice and Water moves.
-Water > Rock, fire (Charmander), ground
-Ice > Grass (Bulbasaur), ground, flying (many Gen1 legendaries), dragon (some of the strongest Gen1 Pokemon)
You may say that Bulbasaur can also counter the ice of Squirtle with grass, but it's an interesting point that Squirtle can put up a really good offense against something that would (for the two other of the trio) would be difficult to do.

Also, he's outright the coolest.

Yeah, dragons are more or less common in the Pókemon Universe, so Charizard wasn't that impressive. The flower reduced Venusar's coolness factor. But Blastoise? Blastoise was unique. Blastoise had motherfucking guns. No other Pokémon has guns. Not only guns, but cannons. And he is so cool he doesn't have to use them to kickass. Why? Because he is the only being in the Pokémon Universe with guns that means that he would rule the world, not humans, Blastoise with guns. He would strait up murder everything in existance with those guns. He is a riot control machinge, and he could just up the pressure and a little rock for a water jet cutter. Now that is cool. Dragons and flowers are meh, water canons are cool.

And in the animé Squirtle wears sunglasses. He Horatioed before Horatio, I'm sure.

For the final nail in the coffin now we have SCIENCE!

Yeah, Squirtle wins by a huge margin.

This only applies to the single player campaign of Gen 1. Which is more effective in multi-player varies depending on the generation. Charizard was the best of all the starters in the first three generations, just being south of OU. Then came stealth rock, throwing everyone's favorite not dragon to NU, and Bublasaur managed to carve a place in OU as the premiere Sun sweeper.

Charmander all the goddamn way baby.

Why? I'll tell you why.

Because he proved his motherfucking mettle in the TV series. That's when I realized that you could never ever count Charmander out. He had so much goddamn spirit that even Brock could see it.

Case. Closed.

Best starter is actually the Totodile line

I know it's easy to get them confused since they are both reptiles and all. That's okay, It's a common mistake.

Except every water starter that can learn ice beam or blizzard... which is all of them...

Bulbasaur is clearly the best to start with since it can take on the first 3 gyms with ease while Charmander is at a huge disadvantage in the first gym and at a quite big disadvantage on the second (also at a disadvantage in the third if it evolves to Charizard before it reaches that place), but he might be on to something with Squirtle.

However, combining Sunny Day and Solarbeam makes Venasaur a really powerful Pokemon.

And Bulbasaur gets shafted because lolpoisontype.
If the Bulba was mono grass, he would fuck your Squirts up.

Best starter right now is Froakie anyway because that thing learns and can effectively use fucking everything.

Nonsense, everyone knows that Sceptile is the best starter of all time.

Look how little fucks it gives!
He also has the highest speed of all NON-LEGENDARY grass types and the highest stat total of all Grass starters!
He's the Clint Eastwood of pokemon :D

Meh, didn't he consider the fact that some of us may drop the starter? Granted I only did that on Red but still I know people stop using their starter at some point in the game and etc.

Yeh, Sceptile was the only starter i've actually kept. I have a habit of releasing pokemon into the wild, i don't use. I don't keep them in boxes. Don't know why...

Of course, out of all the starters, this bad boy wins every time.

STAB Earthquake? Fire types be hatin'.
Also Torterra. Badass ************.
I'm just gonna agree with the both of ya. Out of Gen 1 starters Bulbasaur is best due to being great on the first couple gyms and good move in general.

And Torterra IS a badass. I loved that guy and wish I could have brought him along in other games. The other Gass-type starters aren't bad though.

Of course Squirtle was the best. I mean come on: It's final evolution was Gamera with artillery mounted to its back. Even ignoring that, it could still learn Ice type attacks and hold the elemental advantage over the other two starters anyway.

Edit:

It's funny how you all think you can deny the glory of the Firey Monkey King.

This guy's a monster. He swept half of Red's team for me in Heart Gold, while he was at least ten levels beneath the weakest member.

This seems to assume Red & Blue, wonder if this holds any truth in X & Y?
