But here's another thing to ponder: in the (public, not gaming) news recently the Xbox360 seems to be the only system being mentioned. Is this because Xbox360 owners are more likely to be extreme in their gaming obsession, or is it just coincidence?
The Wii gets mentioned, usually only in positive contexts. The Xbox 360 is most like the last generation, which like the generation before it was demonised for whatever reasons. The 360's popularity, media functions, and appeal to the masses significantly over the PS3 (I cite VGChartz [http://www.vgchartz.com/]), and its catalogue of games of questionable morality (Gears, Halo, GTA) makes it a wonderful page-filler, in both the "for" and "against" columns. The Wii has too much positive - it's hard to write against a console that your grandmother plays and enjoys, at least until MadWorld comes out.

In this story, it's relevant because he DID steal a 360 at gunpoint. But most of the time, it's because the 360 is the defining "standard console". That and the majority of notable PS3 games have been ported anyway, with the sole exception of LittleBigPlanet (which did get a burst of media attention).

Brandon Winn?

More like Brandon Fail.
You stole my witty one-liner!

Next time Jamash, next time I will be the one stealing a joke of teens being shot for being stupid!
Damn, I was too late to make the joke, £50 says that a relative blames the cops hating black people!
No way! You would win and I'd be out a large sum of cash.

When you son gets shot, say it was racism! Your family died in a hurricane, say it was racism!

Racism is why everything bad happens, because it's sooo rampant.[/sarcastic joke making fun of people who jump to blame whatever the hell is possible]

Racism is bad but don't be a dipshit and think it's everywhere, it's not that big a deal now a days.

Mmhm, and where did the legal gun owners get their guns from?

EDIT:

Even if he DID point a gun at the police, that's no reason to shoot him in the torso, is it? The leg should be enough...
VATS told them that a torso hit was 75%, whereas a leg hit was only 14%.

ANOTHER EDIT:

There takes a certain type of hate or malice to commit a crime Fruhstuck. While it my not be "hate" aimed at the target of theft, it is a large amount of disrespect.. which would fall in line w/ racist motivation.
I disagree. Crimes of opportunity can have no hate, malice or anger involved. You don't need to be angry to swipe some Chockitios while the 7/11 clerk processes your sale. You don't even need to feel disrespectful towards him: Your hungry, but you don't have much cash on you, a chocolate bar sits in front of you and there is no one to see you take it.

Not much emotion involved.

Jack Thompson was asked his opinion on the matter and said "This is what happens when police officers play violent murder simulator video games like Grand Theft Auto. They become remorseless killing machines."

Grand Theft XBOX: Brandon Winn is an Epic Fail.

BTW, how come that Brandons of the world have an issue with the XBOX? First we had the Crisp kid, who decided to go out in the woods and die in the snow for not being able to play the console during school hours, and now we have this Niko Belic wannabe ************. No wonder he failed miserably; he's too tanned for a Serbian gangster.

Because everyone knows, criminal buy guns legally.

Seriously, ask any Yo-Yo or gangbanger. If they don't cut your throat, they'll tell you all guns are aquired illegally from other countries or are STOLEN from legal owners. Only an idiot uses a gun they bought- Criminals watch CSI too.
The policy of everyone being able to own a gun makes for a gun-society though doesn't it
If you were to have a more closed policy on guns then you wouldn't have as much gun-crime
I think you have a right to your weapons, but if there were less of them in the country less of them would be used
There would still be a problem but it'd be less because there wouldn't be as many guns around

EDIT: sorry for the double post
I'm not arguing, either extreme is bad. Uhh, but this is a discussion for off topic... I'll make a gun control thread tomarrow.

Anyway, the thing to remember is Police NEVER discharge their weapons unless they have reason to believe they are under immeneint threat. He pointed a gun at the police, they had 0.05 seconds to decied what to do. The training is, if someone points a gun at you, you assume they are going to try and kill you because the FIRST rule of gun safety is do -not- point it at anything you do not intend to shoot or kill.

The fact he died is tragic, but an unfortunately unpredictable result. I'm certain the police were only aiming to wound- thats why he got hit in the torso and not in the chest/head 50 times (it's not like in the movies, cops know how to f**king shoot). Unfortunatly even in extremity shots like the arm or the foot a gunshot has a high potential to be lethal- it's completly random what blood vessels it hits or if it goes through bone or hit's bone and shatters... Gun's were designed to kill, not wound. At least, not since the Civil War.

Are you being serious, or is that just a quip at Thompsons expense? Because I don't cotton to that kind of disrespect for our police officers and I reckon the hyper conservative reader base of his magazine won't either...

Should I be worried cause I find this amusing?

There are so many movies out there that have "people" shot for reaching in their jackets in a standoff, and this guy points a gun at a police officer. There really should be a limit to stupid. Of course, some people would blame the police officer for doing what he was trained to do, aka "shoot the guy pointing a gun at me".

You figured after playing Gears of War he would have learned to take cover, but NO....he walks out the front door and points a gun at the cops.

He had a death wish.

Why is it the criminal is made to sound like a poor victim?
He got what he deserved. If you don't stop him now, the next time a REAL innocent person might be harmed.

Here's some interesting facts: You are still more likely to be a victim of violent crime in the UK than the US and Scotland has been found to be the most violent nation in the developed world. And this is because knives are used, showing you don't need guns to be a violent country.

Scotland has been named the most violent country in the developed world by a United Nations report. The study found that, excluding murder, Scots were almost three times as likely to be assaulted as Americans

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/4257966.stm
Were you too busy patting yourself on the back to hear the guy with the knife behind ya?

cops shot a black man who pointed a gun at police, therefore a victim.

"Mmhm, and where did the legal gun owners get their guns from?"

I don't understand what this question has to do with anything. They got them from a sporting goods store or a private owner, etc. What's the point? It's still legal.

Yes, but if criminals don't use guns they buy, and legal gun owners don't kill people, surely that means removing legal gun owners from the equation would mean that criminals couldn't get guns, and therefore the legal owners would not need them for protection. Right?

I think that everything is to do with the gun, as has already been said.

Stealing xbox 360 = Not that bad a sentence.

Brandishing gun = Oh dear..
