WoW has three major selling points, only one of which is sort of matched by Aion.
A Pre-existing fan base.
Aion is a brand new IP. Is it better than WoW? I've read some of the lore, but it didn't exactly light me on fire, but then again neither did the lore in WoW.
A great "opening hook."
The big thing that hooks people to WoW initially is the beginning of the game (the first 20 levels or so). They're interesting, fun, and progressive. Apparently the Aion experience has similar.
"Top heavy" design.
This is going to be the determining factor in the staying power of Aion. From the beginning Blizzard made it abundantly clear that WoW would be "top heavy" with most of the best content at the end of the game and have made good on that promise since release. So far I have heard nothing about Aion's endgame. If they can make it as good as WoW's endgame, then they have a shot at being named the "WoW killer".
