A stupid thing to base how good a game is/isn't.

though i cant even talk at this point because i'm such a graphics whore >.>

I'm pretty sure all of the 11 million people that play WoW at the moment won't just suddenly quit because someone says it's better. Somebody said Frets on Fire was better than Guitar Hero but we all know that's a lie.

God people get this in your brain, THERE ARE NOT 11MILLION WoW PLAYERS ANYMORE!!!!!! WHEN CHINA BANNED WoW THERE NUMBERS DROPPED BY ABOUT 6MILLION!!!!!! >.> if i had penny for everytime i've had to say that....
No, its not that low... If I had a penny... A lot of the big WoW players in China switched to Taiwan. The other part are playing on the reopened free servers since WoW is now open again in China, only it is free until the WotLK content is approved. And they may have a copy to send them now for that as well.

As for games, no, I don't think Aion will kill WoW. I do expect it to do well, but I've given up gauging since the AoC and WAR numbers were far off from what people expected as well.

if we want to talk number expectations Aion already has over 4million players and it hasn't been released in US/EU yet.

Aion will spike quickly and then fall. It may temporarily take population form Wow but due to how shallow, empty and repetitive Aion is, it doesn't have a large future beyond new interest.

No, you can't kill WoW it's like the metal!
Aion tried to kill the WOW
They failed and were stricken down, to the ground.
Warhammer tried to kill the WOW
But the WOW was proven much too strong!

I'm not all for that number, just being that China is already great for that number, and as it has a kMMO base, it will be popular over there as a starter. I see it as a solid game, but it takes a lot of flak in other parts of the world, brushing it off as just a straight kMMO, contrary to what people say. They also had the WoW fiasco, so a lot of people would have switched over then if they couldn't get foreign accounts.

It does seem to be decent though, as a lot of sites have its preorder in the top 5 sellers, and the game still doesn't come out for almost a month. I just won't go with numbers until we see its staying power on the US/EU side of things.

I'm still a little confused on the "kill WoW' idea like most. But mostly, why does one have to stop playing WoW in order to pick up another MMO? For the longest time I played both CoH/CoV and WoW at the same time (until I quit both) so I don't see why everyone has to pick a single MMO and battle to the death to talk about how its the greatest one of all (or to make 6 pages worth of argument to talk about this).

Also, better and worse are relative terms. Saying Aion has better graphics and sounds and stuff like that may make it a better game then WoW for you, but like apparently somewhere between 6-11 million people, I don't give a shit about graphics. Personally I find WoW an easy game to get into and use to, fun to play, and works on my shitty laptop nicely therefore it is a good game for me. This also applies to how the amount of subscribers doesn't necessarily make a game good. Half the damned world could play runescape and I'd still argue that it blows amazingly. But if you honestly care about how four million people have subcribed already, wait about a month after release for people to get a real feel for the game, and then we'll see how it holds up against other MMOs.

Lastly, as for WoW dying, I think Cataclysm has pretty much ended that. Every old WoW player I have talked to who has quit seemed excited to get back into the game to check out the reform of the old world. What Blizzard has done is appealed to their older fan base, and it's working nicely for them.

I haven't heard of Aion Online so for me I think it needs to step up a bit to kill WoW.
I'll drink to that, never heard of this game (though admittedly I didn't know blizzard and its various game franchises even existed till 6 months after WoW came out)

My question is why people are so hard up to see a WoW killer come along? Why does every new MMO have to be the fabled hero of prophecy? Online games can exist despite WoW being around, the problem I always find with new games is that their interface is wonky, as in having like 90 different status screens for you character, chat systems that blow monkey chunks, rather clunky combat, their worlds seem very dead and static, and they don't have pre-established stories. Essentially companies try so hard to "fix what blizz fucked up" that they end up breaking their own games.

You want to see a WoW killer then bring me a game that's so far out of left field from a franchise that's already got a very well established story game wise (none of the Star Wars or star trek bullshit); doesn't try to look like its the gritty real world where everything is jagged, rusty, and smattered with a color palette of grey and brown.

If you want my personal opinion why WoW is so damn hard to topple its because of their art style, the color palette for WoW is a very soft painterly like palette that's not trying to mimic the real world. It's also going to be very hard to topple because in terms for this generation of MMO's WoW got to the market first with a fanbase that was already quite massive. A fanbase that has friends....lots...and lots of friends.

To finish beating the dead horse into a sticky red mess on the floor I'll give one last good whack with this.

It's been said before, it will be said again; the only thing that will kill WoW is the developers deciding they've milked it for all its worth.

--EDIT--
Did a google search and watched a couple trailers, Aion looks like an english port of a japanese game and has already lost the fight due to its art style. Its that same over-realistic anime art style that continues to rear its ugly head in today's market.

GUILD WARS 2! It will dethrone them all. It will not only kill them it will drown them, then burn them, then shoot them 10.000 times (in the chest) with the Minigun from TF2 then at last burry them in a pile of s***.

Sorry. I just had to say that..

EDIT: Seriously though i don't think you can kill WoW, it has 11 mil players who will probably continue playing it, even though something better comes up.

We all want something to be bigger then WoW just because...
why to countries build HUGE buildings then boast that there bigger then the worlds previously largest building? Cause they can...
I.E. We need no reason. :D

I'm not saying it makes or breaks a game, but it makes the grind fest a little more bareable, as well as endgame dicking around. from a personal standpoint, I'd still be paying my subscription if point and click killing was more visually stimulating

OMG A GAME, KILLING A GAME. LIKE ALL THE "HALO KILLERS" AND "DIABLO CLONES" AMIRITE?!!!

On a more serious note, who gives a crap. Apparently Aion is like WoW, but with flying combat, and doesn't attempt to push any boundaries, which is fine. People will still play WoW, and with Cataclysm on the way, chances are people'll come back to it to play the new stuff, and might entice new players (supposedly, leveling in good ol' Azeroth will be fun, Northrend kind of fun with progressive zones and such).

BTW, anyone think that The Barrens "sundered" itself after 5 years of Barrens Chat. I mean, Deathwing is powerful and all, but still, nothing compares to the evil that permeates the Barrens Chat.

I'll continue to play WoW, I'll play Aion and give it a chance and see if it's interesting enough. GW2 regardless will get extensive playtime, GW is one of my all time favorite MMO-like game, the missions made me feel like I was changing something, and not farming the hell out of Ragnaros for the 9th time, praying for gear to drop (even though GW was limited, still a great game).
