The AK47 is proven to be more reliable in any situation. For crying out loud, it fires after being driven over by a Humvee...
Also it's easier to clean, and easier to learn how to use. And there's likely to be more ammo Available at anytime. So I'll go for the AK unless I can be completely sure, that the M16 is newly cleaned and I won't be using it for too long... And someone tells me how the heck it works...

I'm taking a third option.

An AusStyer
Um.... Steyr Aug? good choice. Unfortunately, as it's not on the rack, you get shot.
No, the Austyer

F88 Austeyr: The Australian Army's modified version of the Steyr AUG A1. Changes for the Australian version include a bayonet lug, a 1:7 in rifling pitch as found in the M16A2 rifle, optimized for the heavier 62-grain NATO-standard SS109/M855 round and an "automatic lockout" selector that can physically disable the fully automatic position of the 2-stage trigger mechanism found on the standard AUG. Contrary to popular belief the Australian issued F88 does not have the crosshair inside the "doughnut", however the New Zealand issued AUG does incorporate this feature. The AUG won a competition against the prototype of what would become the Bushmaster M17S. The components are built under license at the Australian Defence Industries factory in Lithgow, New South Wales (now known as Thales Australia).[20]

Of the two available, the M16A4
Cool. I want one! You still brought a picture of a gun that is not in the armory to a gunfight.

As a weapon, Ak's are easy to come by, easy to maintain, extremely durable and decent at what they do. Why would you choose any other?

Im sorry my M16, But if given the choice, AK47. Bigger round and simple Break down can mean all the difference in a fire fight. ( Ak uses 7.62 and M16 Series uses 5.56 )

P.S. Personally I would reach for an M1A
That totally depends on what you are shooting at. For a person the 7.62 round typically penetrates 12 inches of flesh before it yaws. Which means it can pass right through a person still carrying a substantial amount of its energy. While the hole will likely kill eventually, you want stopping power as well. I have fired near on 700 rounds through an M16, and not good rounds either, dirty rounds. The weapon still functioned perfectly. That's more reliability then you are likely ever going to need. The smaller rounds means you can carry far more ammo as well.

I don't know why people are so eager to believe videogames portrayal of the weapon over real world facts and evidence. Hardly and military forces that can afford it have stopped using the larger 7.62 rounds and started using rounds similar to the 5.56 round used by the US military. Even the Russian military.

I say AK47 as it is more reliable, and has higher stopping power.
One question, what type of M16 are we talking about the original M16 or M16A1 that is full auto or the M16A2 that is three round burst?

AK47 hands down. It's not only sexy, but it's reliable, packs a punch and is durable enough to smash someone's face in. Seriously, AK's > AR15's.

M16. Both of them are instantly recognizable and familiar to nearly anyone who has played an FPS, but I simply prefer the M16. It tends to be a burst-fire weapon in games, which suits my playstyle well. AKs typically sacrifice rate of fire and accuracy for damage, which is nice up close but I feel puts it at a disadvantage at typical assault rifle range.

Plus, its the M16 man! The thing is a classic; way classier than that sand-munching brick the Russians call a gun. Reliability isn't everything; if someone offered me an economy car or a Ferrari, you'd be sure I'd take the sports car.
Don't get me wrong, I love the M16, but getting the right manual burst from an AK47 is a great trick to rival accuracy. The first five or so rounds of an AK47 are VERY precise, then all shit goes wrong. I prefer the AK47 if I was good enough to control the burst.

If I was an amateur gamer, M16, just because it's more adaptable

This is an argument that will never end, whether in the real world or in gaming circles.

Personally, the AK-47 has something the M-16 never will: aesthetic sex appeal. It just looks good, with its curved magazine and wooden furniture. The M-16 is ugly as hell.

AK47, because in barely any game I've played is the M16 portrayed accurately.
To be fair, I can count the games that portray the AK47 accurately on one hand. The vast majority can't distinguish between any weapon that remotely looks like kalashnikov make.

M16. It's usually a 3 shot burst weapon and they're usually just one trigger pull away from killing a guy, no panicking and waste of ammo.

AK 47.
1) it's a lot cooler to give your Xena war cry holding an AK
2) Assuming the game has a mildly realistic environment setting, AK 47 is the single most
reliable, maintainable weapon ever produced. Russian military technology does two things:
a) work b) stand the test of time. Just ask the NAZIS. *shit the MIG 29 is the ONLY
FIGHTER JET EVER MADE that can take an EMP pulse, and
stay gliding WITH NO POWER.*
3) "Burst Fire" can be accomplished with a steady trigger finger
4) The last round in the clip is the stock. As has been said, if you Master Chief someone with an M16, you get a broken M16.
5)Recoil. Yes, m16 has less, can't deny it. But the AK has a VERTICAL pattern. Aim for the solar plexus, fire 3 rounds and in every game I ever played, it scores death, often with a head shot.
6)Classic Wood Grain FTW.
Could not have said it better myself Sir. Your points are beautiful

well, in video games, they might as well be the same thing....but im going with the slightly better accuracy of the m16.

in a real life situation, id avoid both of these.

The AK-47 for a few reasons.

Old M16s were shitty in construction and function, and accuracy, but those have all been majorly addressed since the 70s, so those don't make as much difference.

I can strip an AK-47 and rebuild it blindfolded in less than 2 minutes because it is so simple. Sometimes Simple Is Good.... just ask SIG. It's not the most accurate, but it's passable, and anyone intelligent never rock and rolls. Also, the durability of the gun is legendary. I saw an AK run over by a tank, and the guy used a wrench as a hammer to beat the barrel straight, and it still worked, less accurately, but still functioned. Also, the thing actually gets more accurate when its a little dirty, and almost never jams, unless you have shoddy ammo. There's something about having wood for a stock that just feels right to me. Never warmed up to synthetics.

The M16 has developed into an admirable gun, but I have never been the fan of the 5.56 NATO. I prefer the 7.62x51 (similar to a Win .308, but slightly hotter) which I use for my Palma rifle, or a 30-06. 5.56 is a varmint round, like the .22 hornet magnum. The 7.62x51 and 30-06 are varmint rounds, but for the ten-toed variety.

...if you're talking an actual first-run M16 (as in pre-A1 model) or an actual AK-47, I'll take the AK. It may not be able to hit the broad side of a barn at over 100m due to a barrel that's been sitting in the weather for 50+ years, but at least it still works.

If you're talking AR-15 platform vs Kalashnikov platform... it's a tossup. I mean, the Kalashnikov side has the AK-105 (7.62x39) and AK-108 (5.56x45) and unparalleled reliability... but the AR platform has the Shrike (LMG) and .50 Beowulf (12.7x42) upper receivers...

...So I'm gonna go with something I can actually afford:
The Mosin Nagant [http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinHumor.htm].
