I was driving to the ice skating rink the other night with a friend, when out of the blue, as it happens alot in my neck of the woods, a deer wandered out into the road and stood still as it stared into the lights. I slammed my brakes on and still hit the deer at a full fledged 45mph(we were on a country road) and saw it ragdoll to the side of the road, Luckily I was driving an old '99 Yukon so we weren't hurt(we barely even felt the impact), but I noticed transmission fluid was spewing out of the front, so I stopped the car and got out to access the damage. Upon getting out, I saw the deer on the side of the road motionless and didn't think twice about it, and looked at the damage.

Am I a terrible about not giving two ####s about the deer?

I mean.. he kinda ruined my truck(I know it wasn't his fault), and I've never really thought twice about killing or at least destroying their nests if they were ruining my property(birds, groundhogs, bees, termites etc.)

EDIT: It was a 5 point buck! Huge friggin' deer.
EDIT2: I did call the police to report everything. Tow truck driver took the deer, cops wanted the deer as well.

Well you tried to brake, as long as you didn't try to run it over your not heartless. It was a lost cause, no point worrying over it.

In fact, my grandpa once when he ran over a deer took it home and hung it up in the bathroom so he could cook at a later pont:p

No you aren't horrible. What could you do for it? It was dead, or dying. I mean I have heard stories like this all the time. Sometimes the deer is still alive and the person will shoot it just to put it out of it misery. But since your deer was already motionless, nothing you could do.

My only thought is, what a waste. You should've thrown the deer into your truck, it probably would've benn good eating. :D

No. Deer, and especially Bucks, suck. Stupid animals. Take it from a guy who hunts, take the body, sell it to whoever (as long as the trauma wasn't too bad) and move on.

Tow truck driver agreed to tow me back for free if he could have the deer XD

The two cops that came to the scene both asked me if they could have the deer after the driver started to hook me up to the truck

No, that isn't heartless. You did try to brake. And anyway, you wouldn't want to approach a wounded animal of that size. He may look hurt, or dead, you go to check and next thing you know, he's beating you to death and making you a shishkabob on his antlers. They tend to blindly panic when in distress. Though it is courteous to other drivers and people that will be coming along the road, to call someone to remove it from the road, or if you are very VERY sure he's dead - to move him to the side of the road yourself.

As far as I'm concerned you have nothing to lose sleep over. I hit a deer once and was forced to bash its skull in with a tire iron. This was because it was in danger of flopping onto the highway and endangering the lives of people that actually matter.

It's not that I'm pro-human, I just think the only animals that deserve our consideration in such things are certain kinds of primates and certain sea-faring mammals.

Hartless is way too harsh of a word, the wrong word even.
Let?s just say you?re a biased creature and like all of them you have a priority list and the poor dear at that time was just a bit further down that than the other things you were worried about. You had just been in an accident, don?t hold it against yourself.

If it's dead it's dead, nothing you can do about it.. And also as you are taking the time to write about it on this, some part of you actually cares, and you obviously thought about it to make you want to post it etc etc. if you do that to a human, then fair enough, thats cold, but as it was just an animal, no worries.

EDIT: anyone who voted yes are just your silly extremists with their "omg don't eat/kill/look at/drink anything that involves an animal in some way" i mean shit, it is just a deer on the side of the road.... Why so serious?

Is that big? I never classified a deer as HUGE until he had at least 7. He's Big at 5 points.

OT: Not really. You hit the breaks and its not like you hit the gas, barreling through, shouting "lets fucking run Bambi down" like a guy my mom used to date.

I dunno, I've killed deer, but thats for venison and jerky (my grandfather takes the rest and does... something with just about all of it that doenst include hanging its head on the wall). Killed one with an 1889 winchester, andother with a bow, and while i've never felt particularly bad I've thanked it (though I think thats just my Native American blood and the way my grandfather always did).

Deer population are so overinflated that they need a good trimming. Now, arguably you could probably have given it a passing thought. And your statement about destorying nests (specifically birds, cause thats when it gets iffy) doesnt portray you as the most sentimental human being.

Just dont go around talking about it in a proud sense and you wont be heartless.

You tried braking and didn't laugh (well, you didn't say you did), so not really, no.

as you hit it in a truck at 45MPH there would be nothing you could do, so what's the point? it wouldn't have survived

Damn I feel sorry about where ever you live. In most Louisiana hunting clubs a 5 or 7 point wouldn't even be eligible for a kill unless it was close to 180+. That is with white tail too. Our smallest deers are normally 9+ tines with at least a 13 in. spread. We are the Sportsman's Paradise though.

Well, I live in Western PA, and I'm not an avid hunter. I just did it cause we wanted deer at those times and that was the best way to do it (plus it let me test my Winchester's killing power in a legal way). The two I found were a 9 and a 7 respectively. So thats big to me, but probably not big to my cousin or his family, since they hunt.

What type of Winchester? I have a Model 70 7mm-08 with a Zeist scope that I use for White Tail that I've really fallen in love with in the past couple of years. I was using a .223 before, and I didn't like the ballistics drop or kinetic energy produced with it.
