Yes. The least you could have done is go over and make sure hes dead.
But I guess your old junker was more important than a animals suffering...
Things hit by a truck that aren't moving are usually dead.
Bahaha! Yes that a pretty accurate summary.

No, the deer was dead, or about to die anyway, even if it was still alive, you couldn't really have done anything, and your going to check on it wouldn't have eased its passing in any way.

Just a point of note though, I believe that if you are about to hit something on the road, you should actually speed up, if you won't be able to stop. Partially for the sake of the animal, better to have a swift death than a drawn out one, and partially for yourself, you are more likely to be injured at a slower speed. Someone might want to check this, it might just be something that people say, but I think it's true.

You aren't heartless, you tried the brakes, and it wasn't still alive and in pain.

I know of people who have had their big fancy pickups totaled from deer collisions. Yes, totaled.

Furthermore, trying to avoid deer (or other animals) very often leads to more severe crashes, or at least more expensive vehicle recovery. Truck drivers are specifically instructed not to try to avoid animals in the road. Deer (etc) really are a serious threat to vehicle safety, and if your area has a large deer population, you should drive accordingly.

Forget the deer, you are alive - and that was *not* a foregone conclusion before the collision.

I like animals but there isn't really anything you could have done. Also it may have become dangerous if it was dying as someone said. I don't think you are heartless if you were you wouldn't have been worried enough to post this here surely?

No, it's just a deer. You should perhaps have taken a look to see if the deer was in pain though.

Not really. There was little you could do for the deer, and it's an animal that wasn't even a pet.

I would've been like ''Oh shit! i killed a deer!'' but i'm sure it just depends on the person, really. I don't think you're a hearless bastard since, well, theres plenty more deer out there and...you paid for that truck.

Well, the fact that you created this post at all suggests that you are not.

EDIT

"No. Deer, and especially Bucks, suck. Stupid animals. Take it from a guy who hunts, take the body, sell it to whoever (as long as the trauma wasn't too bad) and move on."

That, on the other hand, is a heartless bastard.
How is that heartless? All they do is ruin crops, and it would be kinda bad if you killed the thing and didn't eat it. Wasteful.
OT: No, as there was nothing you could have done, and you tried to stop.

the fact that this is on your mind, suggests that you feel guilty about this. thus you are not heartless

You tried to stop, you called the police, and you're posting a poll on the Escapist- that suggests some degree of concern about the matter. So all in all, I'd say no.

I would have checked on it first, but that's just me (I'm an animal guy >.<). There isn't anything wrong with how you handled the situation though. There was shit all you could have done for the deer anyway.

Nah, shit happens. It's not like you laughed about it and went after the deer's babies just so its spirit would suffer.

Heartless? No. If you are heartless for accidentally hitting a deer, even though you did everything in your power not to, and caring more about your truck after getting past the "it's dead, I'm not" stage, then there are about a half a million jobs out there that anyone doing them who is still sane is probably Dr. Mengele. Now, heartless would be if you then saw its mate, and Holy Mary, this is getting censored then after that you tied I hope you appreciate this censorship and then you saw its kid and Now the mind that came up with this, that's heartless and with 3 tuna hooks and a stick blender you the images... they won't come out until excuse me, I really have to puke now. Now that's heartless. Incidentally, did you put it to good use? Its either good meat for you or good money for you, depending on what you do with it.

This is an animal that jumps out onto roads and then freezes up when they see headlights. That which doesn't adapt can only die. Plus you did try to brake. Furthermore, car damage is expensive to repair, so it's not wrong to be pissed when a fucking deer wrecks your shit seemingly at random.
