See, the difference between dictionaries and human speech is that people don't use the defined use of the term in proper context. When I hear someone talking about feminists, they're speaking in negative connotations, of women who go beyond the defined term and into female superiority, scary people who hate men. Equal rights is fine, but it's not how people SEE feminists.

In any case, as a man who doesn't try to keep the working lady down, I'm an open-minded individual...but I'm fairly certain that doesn't make me a feminist either. More like I'm an advocate for more responsible behavior in men.

I consider myself a humanist, and I feel that such a label encompasses feminism. If you're a humanist, then you're a feminist, since women are human. A humanist stands for equal rights, treatment and laws for ALL humans - men, women, black, white, poor, rich, etc.

Now, granted, the world cannot be composed of just humanists. It's too broad a group, and since it tries to fix everything, it'll end up probably fixing nothing. Feminism is an essential component of humanism, and feminist activists should focus on feminism - after all, someone has to.

I just prefer to call myself humanist.

I highly doubt that.

Also, I don't think Feminism means it's *all* about Woman now, it's about equal rights for everyone. Obviously when Feminism first came about it was solely for Woman as Women were being treated like shit by society and being forced under Men which is obviously unacceptable.

Women still need Feminism though, even in first world countries Women still aren't fully treated as equal and a lot of Males still think Women are underneath them. And as for 3rd world countries, they desperately need Feminism for Women there.

No. But I'm not against it either, in fact I think it is a good thing. Equal human rights for everyone is a crucial step to our progression as a species. However, I'm a male, and gaining female rights worldwide is their crusade, not mine.

You know, I wish a woman like that would join the forum just to stir shit up. Every time we have these threads people say they aren't feminists because "feminists do this" and "feminists do that" while everyone here who considers themselves a feminist tries to explain otherwise.

I've never met a woman who identifies as a feminist because she hates men. I've never met anyone who thinks that women should be superior to men. I honestly want to meet some of these people because according to this forum they're fucking everywhere. I've met women who hate men, sure, but that has nothing to do with feminism.

Make no mistake, the sort of radical evil man-hating feminist the Escapist is paranoid about is a rare sight, and I'm probably a feminist by the definitions in the OP's post (wouldn't specifically identify myself as one, but women are obviously people who deserve to be treated as such). Still, you asked, I answered. They do exist, in numbers enough that there are forums for them (check out that Radfem Hub place).

I think the inherent hilarity of the statement "Not too fond of feminists or feminism. Wouldn't date one given the choice," stands on it's own. Any further commentary from me would just cheapen the moment.

I find those definitions of feminism to be sorely lacking. Feminism is the crazy idea that everybody deserves to be treated like a human being, regardless of things like age, race, gender or sexual orientation.

Isn't that just being a humanitarian?

OT: I like to categorize feminists into 2 sub categories, Equalists and Extremists. Pretty simple to guess what the differences are. I am neither, just want equal rights for everyone not for one specific group of people.

I'm more than that, actually. Allow me to quote Erich Fromm, he describes a viewpoint that is the same as mine:

tl;dr: There are no psychological differences whatsoever between the sexes, all differences that do exist are due to our culture.

Actually, I would prefer it if no genders existed at all -- but since that is impossible, I think we should stop making any difference between them.
We shouldn't try to "negotiate" between the sexes. Right now, we act as if they were two seperate factions that need to be held equal. Nobody should care at all whether most leading people are men, or women, or whatever else. The best people should be the leader, regardless of gender. We shouldn't care about gender at all, apart from reproductive purposes.
I don't know about you -- but I refuse to let certain behaviours be forced upon me just because I am male.
