For a pure Stealth action I would go for tenchu. Sure the AI is sheit but its a helluva fun game. But if I'm totally truthfull Batman felt like a better game(only played demo). I haven't gotten around to buying it yet(too many games to buy, not nearly enough cash to get em all)...

You are sadly lacking thief but in its absence i would say mgs, although it does seem to have lost a bit of stealth over the years it is still better than good

Out of the list Id say splinter cell. Correct me if I'm wrong but to get full points dont you have to go completely unnoticed? as in no dead bodies or any evidence? If that is wannabe stealth then id like to see the real thing.

Hence the other selection.

Thief needs to be on the poll. No stealth poll can be complete without that series (unless it's hiding).

I played Thief 3: Deadly Shadows a few years ago and loved it, and recently I've been playing Thief: The Dark Project and that game is way better than Deadly Shadows and any other stealth game I've played so far.
You just can't get the feeling that Thief gives you from any other game.

i have to say Batman: Arkham Asylum.

mainly because in most games you have an option in case you fuck up the stealth, but in B:AA when faced with guys with big guns, you have pretty much no choice but stealth, since if you went up and tried to punch them you would end up being peppered.

besides, who doesn't like picking off the armed goons, then flying out of nowhere to nail the last one with a flying boot to the face.

The Hitman Ser.... wait... the... Hitman series isn't in the poll? But... It's like a brilliant series and even has that... movie.... which wasn't that great...

......*sighs, clicks "Other" *

I decided to cease lurking on this site and register in order to vote Other. Thief is the best stealth franchise out there and hasn't compromised any sneakiness for other styles as others on the list have. Three of the most pulse-pounding games I've ever played, and you never have to kill a human to get the job done.

I definitely likes Splinter Cell but there a a few in your poll and in this thread I haven't played yet and can't compare.
So I chose 'other' and will check out the others soon, thief for example.

Haven't played a stealth game for ages (walking cloaked in Crysis most of the time doesn't count ^^) thx for reminding me

Breaking away from the norm, I would say playing as a spy in TF2, only because you play against real people, not some pre-programmed AI.

Chalk up another vote for Thief. Most stealth games make you go from point A to B without being spotted. Thief encourages exploration simply by rewarding you with shiny loot, that'll help you pay for more thieving gadgets.

Thief is a fantastic stealth series, as... ah... almost everyone has noted above, and I'll always love the Tenchu games, Wrath of Heaven in particular (though I've not played the latest iteration).

If pressed though, I think my favourite would have to be Hitman. The idea of hiding in plain sight and planning your strategy before you attempt things is really unique, I think.

As for Metal Gear Solid... I'd say they might well be 'the best games that have stealth in them', but the actual stealth mechanics are some of the worst - they tend towards hide-n-seek rather than any sort of thinking or planning.

MGS3 on extreme defined stealth for me. I suppose if you think stealth is supposed to be all about gadgets and bullshit, then splinter cell is your thing. I like splinter cell, but it's just not as much...natural stealth, as MGS3 is.

I haven't played most of these, but I found Batman really fun, until the latter half, where they tried to make it harder in the cheapest ways possible.

bad company 2.
evading AI in a map is one thing, but a bunch of other players...that's something else.
or MGO's 1vteam gamemode, forget its name.

This. THIS. THIIIIIIIS.

You've never played a true stealth game until you've tried backstabbing a person who generally isn't as thick and inobservant as a pre-programmed AI character. And running like hell.

[small]Yes, I'm a terrible Spy.[/small]
