I prefer keyboard and mouse, the thing with them is that the starting point of keyboard and mouse is higher then the starting point on a controller. Try sniping in UT 99 then try the same in Golden Eye.

The amount of skill a person can have with each tool is about equal in my opinion but the higher starting proficiency of a mouse means it can get high faster. A very good controller player is about equal to a keyboard and mouse player one step below them. On the other hand being bale to aim easier doesn't make the game easier. Everyone else can aim just as quickly, I die less frequently on the xbox version then in the PC because each shot is more precise, you have alot less time to react.

I would say that keyboard and mouse is much better then a controller, BUT a controller beats a keyboard in movement controls. A single finger is used to control movement, but some are wasted holding the controller. WASD is better for certain games, like UT with its dodge jump, but analog control means you don't need a special button just to walk.

A mouse acts more as a one-to-one movement type rather then on a controller, where the joystick will only return to center so fast to stop your turning.

This was also hoping to get some info on what it would be like to switch between the 2 control types, not just an overused topic.
Switching between control types depends on the person.

Personally I could play Gears for an hour or two on the 360 and then switch to CSS and perform just as well as I normally would.
My brother finds it impossible to use a controller and some of my friends find it impossible to use a mouse.

Either or I guess. Depends on how complicated the controls are and trying to remember what button it was to lob those pesky grenades...

so no real preference here.

Man its amazing how many times threads repeat themselves.

PC. hands down. More precise controls.

PC controls hve always felt really fake to me... and if they make aiming easier, than that just takes skill out of the game.
Ohhh..seems somebody says its too easy. Play Combat Arms, then see if you feel the same way after getting raped. It happens to everyone that plays that game

I do see your point though. However nobody likes difficult controls.

It's not up to personal preference, it's very simple really

FPS/Strategy/Adventure/RPG/Simulation --> Keyboard + Mouse
Beat'Em'Ups/Sports/Jump'n'Runs/Platformers/Actiony-Games (like Tomb Raider or whatever) --> GamePad
Racing/Flight-Simulation --> Racing Wheel/Joystick

If you need Auto-Target, Auto-Aim and all that to fix or compensate for a broken Controller it's not working lol
You don't have fighter pilots driving with a racing wheel or the other way around either...
And yes I've been using both, on some games I even used a X360 Wireless Pad hooked up to my PC because of comfort or I didn't feel like playing with the keyboard, doesn't mean it's "better".
You know what? I made a thread like this one, and in the beginning I said the exact same thing.

It's always a matter of personal preference and style. To be honest I suggest you stick to console controls since it's difficult to try and get used to the other controls when you've been using one for as long as you have.

I'll point out something I have observed:

Aiming: Better with a mouse, since you can slightly budge in order to aim more preciously

Movement: Controller hands down, trying to move with keys is so unintuitive and clunky, especially when moving diagonally. Also you can't control how much you move with keyboard controls (with analog sticks you can easily apply as much pressure to the stick as needed to move either slowly or quickly).
Uhh, with a keyboard you can hold different keys to sneak, walk, and run. I prefer it this way because when using a controller you can screw it up sometimes.

Movement I find easier on a keyboard. Because the mouse lets you turn easier than an analog stick. at least for me. The "unintuitive and clunky" argument goes both ways.

it's all personal preference. I personally prefer the console controls for precision (you get a lot more stability with an analog stick) and for the fact that in the PC you use your right hand to aim and shoot, and your left hand to do everything else. With a controller you can use your right hand to control some other basic functions (jumipng, meleeing, ect) meaning it leaves your left hand to focus on movement and whatever your L1(Lb) and L2(Lt) do. The mouse can be a lot quicker if you're really good with it, but if you aren't a complete FPS junkie you'll probably miss your target most of the time.
On a controller like that, you're putting more work on the aiming side (the more important one) for extra movement abilities like jumping. On a computer, its more balanced out for the actions. movement, jump, crouch, sprint, and reload are all your left hand, where aim, fire, change weapons, melee and sights go on the mouse. It generally works better that way, not to mention, a mouse has a much better time changing from quickly turning to precision than does a controller, where you seem just a little limited on one or the other depending on your sensitivity.

I'm not saying you are wrong, I can see where you're coming from with that, it just all comes down to what you are used to (and how you keymap your controls, but thats also preference)
It is more balanced than a controller, if you ask me. This coming from someone who has logged more hours playing against friends in Red Faction 2 than I can count.

PC controls are just better for FPS. It just takes more getting used to than a controller, but you have more precise, and faster, control.

I've PC gamed a lot, i mean a lot, and i've gotten used to the controls. However, when i pick up a controller, it disappears. I find that if i play on PC i'm constantly thinking about the mouse and the keyboard, but the controller just seems to slip my mind, and i tend to get immersed in console games a lot more because of it.

I agree. PC controls are better for FPS, for me. But I can easily switch to a console and play Halo.

PC are superior controls for FPS, there isn't any question about that. The mouse is simply much more accurate than a very small analog stick could ever hope to be. It really isn't a debate anymore. That's just the way it is.

That being said, I don't see why you couldn't enjoy an FPS on a console.

The guy who said the mouse is better for aiming as a fact...is actually right. But that's nothing against console controls. It can definitely be more comfortable, and some people just prefer to play that way because they don't like using PC controls.

That said, in terms of pure skill and ability: 5 keyboard/mice snipers against 5 controller snipers would be a no contest. First guys would win easy, and it has been proven.

Yes and if you don't the keyboard all you need is Xpadder and a 360 controller and you are all set.

I see a lot of these arguments but they are ultimatly futile considering The PC supports gamepads whether the developers want you to or not
The PC is never limited to a set of features the creators decide to impliment

I prefer console controls because they're comfortable and you can aim easily. You can also lay upside down and play if your feeling dangerous!

Personally, I perform about the same with either, and the better option seems to vary on the game.

Best thing to do is to just play with both and just see which makes you get more kills.

Also, Emphraim you are gonna find that allot of people find console aiming better. Better accuracy is not a "fact" it is YOUR preference.
To "allot" is to distribute.

And from a purely technical standpoint, the mouse is a superior aiming tool to a tiny analog stick. It allows greater accuracy and speed, and is also less tiring to use.

BUT just because it is better from a technical standpoint doesn't mean that everyone has to prefer it. Some prefer controller simply because they like holding them in their hands, and you might simply like aiming with your thumb better because it's what you're used to. Or they like not having so god-damned many buttons on their interface.

In the end though? Doesn't matter what you prefer, as long as you're able to you play with your preference.
