Didn't Discovery Channel do a special about something like this?

They said somewhere along the lines of actually finding a reptile skeleton that resembled a dragon. (or something like that)
I have that on DVD, it's quite interesting.

OT: I'm personally not to sure but I'd like to think they did.

I don't know. I quite enjoyed his book.

OT: Yes it's quite possible that dragons could have existed at one point. How probable it is that they existed is another matter

depends on what kind of dragon we're talking about. For the most part No. They didn't exist. There's very little history even claiming they existed. You don't hear about how the 100 years war was finally decided when a dragon came in to the mix? Other than creation myths and oral stories few ever claimed dragons were hanging around.

I think we would've noticed that.

I'm surprised at how many people think they could have existed considering how many antitheists are on this site.

TROOOGDOOOOOORRR!!!!!

I would love it if dragons existed :p
(and technically, all that chinese dragons were, were really long lizards, no wings, no fire, nothing... sound like any large reptiles anyone know of?)

how likely that dragons exist?
well, if we accept that time will carry on to infinity, 1
everything will happen an infinite number of times, hell, I'm gonna type this an infinite number of times (and lets not get started on multiverse theory)

you mean atheists?
people not believing in an afterlife or spiritual deity?

what has that got to do with the possibility of evolution creating a flying lizard (like a pterosaur?)

Doubtful.

More than likely someone just saw a large reptile (like a komodo dragon or a crocodile or something to that effect) and the stories become exaggerated with every telling. Suddenly the huge reptile can breathe fire, now it can fly.

This could also have been helped along with the use of alcohol, which, ironically, is the basis of christianity (wine, and sh*t that's hard to believe.

It would depend on what you mean by dragons. Something like dinosaurs?

And people have been finding fossils of dinosaurs for ages, in China they use it for medicine. I imagine some of the myths have started that way, spread to other countries. Plus people kind of have the habit of looking at animals and wondering "Could there be giant lizards/wolves/snakes/cows/whatever"

Unforunately, 5/5 Creatures with flying and fire-breathing have never existed, lest we have found fossils by now.

It would be damn cool though.

I wish! They're my favourite creatures :) Unlikely though, many mythical creatures from ancient civilisations' mythology were based on incorrectly identified fossils. For example, the mammoth skull led to the cyclops, and protoceratops skeletons led to griffons. The typical western dragon seems to be an amalgamation of different creatures, eg it has the wings of a bat, so what about other dragon species?

Still, my dragon models looks very beautiful on their shelves, regardless of whether they represent real creatures :)

Well methane is flammable and a waste product of metabolism, I suppose would massive mutations could've either "reversed" the normal way methane exists of a just envisioned a method in which its concentration could be built up safely in the lungs. Sudden expulsion of this would require a spark, possible with the gnashing of adapted teeth

They did, and they were called dinosaurs.

But seriously, it's possible that all those cultures found t-rex skulls and such and immediately jumped to 'dragon.' That's exactly what I would think if I found triceratops bones in my backyard.
But what about before dragons as we picture them now?

I honestly have no clue why people think he is funny along with Jeff Dunham and Dane Cook. They all just suck so much

OT: probably. Not the fire breathing kind, but probably the giant flying reptile kind.

Sorry no, I've never heard of such A work. My adaptation of Dragons come's from the book "The Name of the Wind" by Patrick Rothfuss. In which the "Draconis" are tree eating animals and produce the flames for mating purposes.

Incidentally one the best fantasy books I've read in recent times; I'd call it a modern day LOTR if I thought any fantasy book could rightly be compared with Tolkien's master piece. In his books dragons often guard treasure and engage in conversations with invisable hobbit burglars

No how the hell would the things have been able to survive, for a start theres the whole "filling yourself up with a flammable liquid, then setting-fire-to-it-oh-gods-boom!" and if there as big as all cultures seem to insist they are how would they be able to have a food supply.

My theory is that many cultures discovered dinasour bones and without the science and logic we have today concluded that they were giant mythical creatures and applied the traits of many bad things to them (snakes, fire, big teeth, horns ect.)

Well its that or they saw some kind of distant descendant of the dinasours which had survived and completely hunted them to extinction and utterly destroyed all traces of them (possibly due to them being resource useful or religious reasons, i.e purifying the body of the evil creature through flame.)

Alternatively they exist and are invisible....run.
