But for my contribution: Graphics don't make a game. This is proven by Final Fantasy 7, one of the most popular RPG's of all time, which is 13 years old and still sold 100,000 copies on PSN within a week.

the only reason it sold that well is nostalgia
Or because People really like Final Fantasy 7's Cast.
yea i just cant stand FF7 because of all the angst

Yes, they matter. If a game looks like shit in the previews, chances are you'll never pick it up to try it in the first place. So really, if it doesn't at least look decent, you'll never get to the gameplay.

Also, I can't play games like FFVII because of how shitty the graphics are. I have heard countless times how it is the best game ever... but I can't bring myself to get through it.

I can't stand it because it gets much more praise than it deserves.
But I'm not trying to insight a flamewar, so I'll just leave it at that.

I think the one game that proves that graphics don't matter is the first Operation: Flashpoint. The graphics were truly awful, but I didn't care a damn, because playing the damn thing made me squee when I'd done something truly awesome (and you feel even more awesome because of the fact it is so easy to get killed, which is why most games should do that).

i like a game that looks good, as does everyone though they wont admit it
but obv gameplay and story are more important
look at infamous, has good gameplay and a good story but the graphics are not as good as other recent titles, and yet its still a great game

I think that a good art direction (not outright photo-realistic graphics) is important in how immersed you find yourself in a game. Examples of this would be anything from WOW to Plants Vs. Zombies I guess...

Game play and Story are the most important, but good graphics improve the feel and atmosphere of the game itself.

graphics help with the immersion factor, but no one should sacrifice game features for graphics. But to me everything on XBox 360 and Ps3 look beautiful. I own a Wii. I am not used to good graphics (-_-)

Game play is not as important as graphics, length, re playability, story, and plot pacing. Most games play the same. There aren't many ways you can play a game. Sure it might look different on the screen, but you still have to use a controller. The Wii has different game play but sacrifices everything else which is sad because Nintendo used to be smarter than that. Having a 10-15 hour Mario game is not fun, it's a tedious bore.

Graphics are so important that I can't play a game unless it has some stellar graphics. Hands down the game with the best graphics is Metal Gear Solid 4. If that game had crap graphics, I wouldn't had been able to get through it. Also the story, plot pacing, optional length, extra features, and re playability make MGS4 a classic. Gameplay is the same as it was years ago, simple and easy.

The main reason why I can't get into the Wii is that the focus on gameplay is a trick that makes you look stupid if you fall for it. Gameplay? Dude on the screen, the characters do the same things they did years ago like jump, run, and hit stuff. And then the graphics suck, the length is the same, most of their games have no story or plot, and re playability is gonna be crappy if the graphics suck cause why would I want to look at it? If you are a cheap bastard, then go play that Wii. It's like smoking weed.

I say that graphics are important, but they don't make the game. There are games i enjoy that have crappy graphics, like many online games.

as i said in a previous topic, what i like in a game is not the graphics technology but the presentation, thats what makes games like Okami, Viewtful Joe and Psychonauts look more apealing than, i dunno, lets say Call of Duty 4

I'm a devotee of the Cult of Gameplay. Right now I'm finishing up the original Baldur's Gate; before that, I was spending my game time on the original X-COM. Not exactly graphical powerhouses, you know?
Awesome graphics are rarely necessary, and rarely justified. But when they're justified, wow, hold on.
Consider Company of Heroes; a terrific game, probably the best RTS I've ever played, made possible to a great extent by its awesome graphics. (Unit voices by Lee Emery helped, too.) Was it more fun than X-COM? Eh.... Yes, I think so.

gameply maters there must be some sort of plot not just go here kill move on, the mechanics have to be good where you do not glitch through the game scenery. There is only so much you can bumb up the resolution of getting their head blown off with blood spurting out

They do matter and we need to get away from this whole this aspect is better than that one. For a game to be good or great they need a full package. Graphics are just as important as gameplay or story when you look at the full package. Would PS3 fanboys be spouting that MGS4 is the bestest game ever if it came with 8 bit graphics. How about 360 fanboys with thier Gears of War? Would a blocky 16 bit Marcus take something from the game? Hell yes it would.

I don't know about the rest of you but I paid 300 bucks (plus tax and acc) to enter the "next gen". 10 years before that I paid 300 (give or take) to move into that "next gen". Did I expect games to be radically different? NO. They haven't changed in the past 20 years I don't expect them to start now. The only thing that keeps me going to the next "next gen" is the graphics. Otherwise I would still be playing with power. The power of the Nintendo Entertainment System. Since they are pretty much the same games with better graphics.

graphics besides for functionality seem to be mostly icing so to speak if all you are doing is running around in a beautiful environment what's the point however if it's used to make an explosion blossom in flowers of fire and shrapnel then by all means. Essentially when it makes function spectacular that's when it's worth something

Regardless how powerful your computer is: take your favorite video game, and turn every alterable video setting to absolute minimum. Play the game for an hour or two. Is it just as fun as with the shininess? More because of less distraction? Less because of visual idiosyncrasies?
Detail..I would like to know if Im shooting a friendly or a bad guy..
Yes point your gun in the direction everyone else is firing, but wouldn't it be nice to know that you are shooting the bad guy instead of a stop sign? or a poster on the wall?

To me graphics don't matter. I think gameplay is the biggest aspect of what make a game good.

Super Mario Bros. is still awesome even today.
