Aheh.. I've been doing Capoeira for a while now, and I did the whole Karate/Sun Hang Do thing when I was a kid. But I'm only really interested in martial arts as a sport or hobby; for the fitness and in hopes of learning flashy moves.

As far as actual self defence goes? Yeah, I'm all for the ear-clap and then the nut-shot followed by the run-away, and even that's only at last resort. Talking people down followed by begging and acting pathetic are my first and second line of defence respectively, and are preferable to exposing oneself to life-threatening danger and possible legal ramifications, no? Besides, I haven't been in a fight since secondary school.

Street fighting. =D best you can get and you can mix any moves you want into it.

Let me think. Hair pulled and twisted, head whipped back = smashed face
Claws scratch in any position or angle possibly = major cuts and pain
Teeth sink into any flesh possible = cannibalism (joking) = bad bite injuries

All in all, if the enemy runs off, at least you have DNA somewhere along the line to catch them again and if that fails, their sure to need hospital attention =D

Not to disclaim anybodies asskicking abilities, you really can't know how you'd do in a fight until you actually get into a fight. No matter how much training someone has, if they can't adapt to the pressures of having clear and present danger right in front of them they will lose. I was a competitive boxer for five years and have seen plenty of people hesitate when they need to make a move. In a real fight, hesitation is the same thing as letting your opponent/attacker kill you.

Also, most martial arts schools available to the public don't normally teach their students anything applicable to a real combat situation. They're geared to get asses in seats paying membership fees and not teaching you something that could kill somebody and get you thrown in jail.

Speaking from firsthand experience I would have to say that if you wanted something that could be used in a life or death situation, find a real mixed martial arts gym, learn wrestling, or join the military. If your just looking to be able to kick ass and kill if neccessary, just get a guy who is ex-special forces to teach you a thing or two.

Lastly, if you don't know anything about fighting and find yourself in a situation where you have to defend yourself from extreme violence(worst case scenario), try to use anything and everythig you have on hand as a weapon. do anything you can to put the person in front of you on the ground and then run for help. Remember, in real life there is no fighting fair, there is only making sure your ass doesn't get killed.
I don't entirely agree with you on this one. I do agree that most martial arts studios are all about getting you to pay money to learn how to do some flashy kicks, but there are also those who teach you true fighting skills. I have done Tae Kwon Do for 7 years now, and the first plae I was at was all about the business. Something noticed when I moved to Berlin where they seriously just pitted people against each other and it was a proper fight. It's very hard to use these skills in a real life situation, that is also true, and you never know how you will react, but clasical martial arts are just as viable as MMA, or wrestling or something as long as you get a good dojo with a good teacher. I've been in real fights before, and my martial arts skills have gotten me out of all of them.

Also, good point on how a fight is always about getting your oponent on the ground so you can escape. Life saving lesson, that:)

It's a pretty simple question.
I used to do Tae-Kwon-Do. I was a red-belt two-stripe.

Martial arts are the worst kind of self defense.
Because if you're ready to use deadly force, then bring a fucking gun.

But yeah I know how to defend my self, it's called kicking someone in the nuts and running away or if he's too big, then run away.

I study Aikido, and have learned some Judo, Tae Kwon Do and a few other martial arts from various friends of mine. I also have some experience in boxing. I can use swords, staves, knives, spears, and anything that can be treated as any of the above. I also know some wrestling, and have experience in street fighting. I'm about 6'0" and built like a linebacker, so not many people mess with me anyway, but I can defend myself against anyone who tries. XD

I can also shoot rifles, shotguns, and pistols.

you...you stole everything i was gonna say, just add 4 inchs and...

well its always nice to meet another aikidoka.

Aside from amateur boxing sparing at the local pcyc, and a little amateur wrestling no, aside from an attempted mugging years ago I have had no call to use any of it since school.
That been said I got into weight training years ago to recover from a football injury and have since never been less than 105 kgs. So even the drunkest person/s spoiling for trouble usually left me in peace.

I'm pretty adept at Chin Na, the art of disabling opponents with pain, and if that doesn't cut it, broken tendons and bones.

It would be better to just go ahead and die than feel this position coming to it's full fruition. I tap out if it even looks like someone's going to do this to me.

Judo and Taekwondo for me. I'm not a high level, but I think I can hold my own in a one on one fight.

When I turn 18 (17 now), I'll start doing Krav Maga-that style is about as no bullshit and hyper-realistic as it gets.

15-5, 6 KOs in unsanctioned boxing matches varying between welterweight and middleweight (most of the fights at 154, where I had most of the success, going 13-1) during my teen years. I can throw a punch. The one thing I can't do is get back down anywhere even near 154! I'm 25-30 pounds heavier these days.

blackbelt taekwondo and pinpoint accuracy insults. Meaning, I can run at decent speeds and shout insults at my opponent over my shoulder.

If your being mugged then you really don't stand a chance with your "kung fu".
You see, I have nothing against martial arts as lets say a sport or excersise but when they start claiming that martial arts can protect you from all the boogeymen in the world then it gets quite silly.
Because you never get the frontline news, "Martial art student saves the day".
I would run away if 3 guys with knives would approach me, but I've had guys seriously injured becasue they tried to use "kung fu" or "judo" and sports like that.
Yes, I view martial arts in the same category as badminton and football.

I did do 7 years of ashihara karate when I was younger, got to the yellow belt but got bored due to the kata's.

I doubt its of much use except for some basic reaction made more useful.

I would still run away sooner though...or hit them in the head with a pole that has always worked out for me hahaha :D
