Because this subject has been historically inaccurate outside of controlled environments which an internet is probably the furthest thing from a controlled environment. Averages on "normal" internet discussions of this tend be 7 inches which is just not the case as far as the controlled tests go. Then you also have people rounding up when they shouldn't and no standardised places to measure.

This is like trying to investigate the relationship between force, mass and acceleration while the force provided is just you pushing a toy car and saying "Eh that was about a 5 Newton push". While the car is actually a brick, with no wheels.

That may be an apt analysis, were this trying to be a scientific study. Again, height measurement analogy. People who are short may not want to report, etc, etc.

Say someone posts a thread about cosplay, they post because they are interested in it, ostensibly not because they want to be scientific about the perfect cosplay or something.
