I think doing the Brass Balls run on BioShock turned that game into a survival horror. For me it had many of the hallmarks of old school survival horror.

Notes as backstory- Audiologs
Enemies that do some real damage.
Almost no ammo/health resources.

The only problem with modern day survival horror is the reduced emphasis on puzzles.

Dead Space?
In dead space you're given pretty effective weaponry and are fully able to kill pretty much everything you come across. It's a lot more action focused.
Ammunition is pretty scarce in impossible mode and a scratch can kill you...

I think that's part of the problem as well. Almost all games now seem to have multiple difficulties. I don't remember much to the old survival horror because I didn't play them when I was younger, but I don't remember much in the way of changing difficulties. Let me know if I'm wrong though.

Siren : Blood Curse is the latest one i think. I don't think Dead Space or Silent Hill : Homecoming count.

RE had normal and hard modes as far as I remember...

Alan Wake. Its coming soon and it looks freaky as.

I was going to say the new AVP but that might be me.
Alan Wake isn't survival horror, though. :) It's psychological action thriller.

Like Lost or Twin Peaks, but way more explosions and less John Locke.

Yes Kinda. :)

Survival Horror as it was truly, has always had some action aspect to it. Silent Hill 1, the first game to really make me shiver with fear showed me what true survival horror games should be. Resident Evil may have pioneered the genre, but Silent Hill made it ART!

Unfortunately, developers are losing sight of what make survival horror... horrifying! The devs of Resident Evil 5 pat themselves on the back, citing their game as both scary and full of action, which it couldn't be further from the truth (unless you're looking at their DLC of Lost in Nightmares, which is atmospheric, utilizing the same engine that made great action). Even Silent Hill Homecoming is more combat than atmosphere.

I recently replayed Dead Space, and realized that this is probably the last good (not great) survival horror game in a good long while. The first few levels are great atmosphere, and par for survival horror. Then later in the game, it's mostly action. You're familiar with the baddies, and at that point, you just fight most of the time (breaking the horror part of survival). I remember my first time playing Dead Space. I walked through most of level 1 just because the atmosphere was so tense! It was great, and I knew I picked a winner. :)

Ok. Were they both available off the bat, or was Hard unlocked later? (I was one of those kids not allowed to play stuff like that. :/)

My point is that, after someone mentioned BioShock, BioShock has an easy mode, which takes away from the horror aspect. You have to truly believe that you are going to die. Giving someone the opportunity to unlock infinite rocket launchers in RE 5 by beating the game in EASY mode defeats the whole purpose of horror.

RE(5) IS and STILL is a survival horror even though the storyline has kinda gone a bit lame.
You think RE5 was a survival horror, in what way?
do I need to explain? the game engine hasn't changed much
Bonkekook said:
Horror is based on the feeling of either (1) Being Alone or (2) Having the feeling that anyone with you is useless.

RE 5 GIVES YOU A PARTNER that, while completely useless when it comes to item management, can still headshot with a pistol across the map. There's no horror aspect. A Co-Op horror game is one of the stupidest concepts ever, at least the way RE 5 did it. It was an action game with zombies.
Lmao, I must admit RE5 is more of an action game although I guess the guys at capcom did'nt want another hardcore horror however it still retains the horror element

btw THEY ARE NOT F***ing ZOMBIES

Wait...
Are you saying BioShock is horror?
BioShock isn't scary. At all.
I've played from beginning to end on hard mode with only incinerate (and call Eleanor). It wasn't hard and it wasn't scary.

I'm rather hoping Hydrophobia is more survival horror than action, especially because of one simple fact:

You can't kill water by shooting it.
That all depends on the gun...

Yes, I'm holding a copy of Resident Evil (circa 1996) in my hand right now. So of course, the genre still exists, the games haven't just all dissolved away.

But I suppose the games in terms of relatively new releases. Well Dead Space, FEAR 2 all have pretty strong horror elements, but it's just not like the heyday.

Fear John Locke!

I'm going to throw my weight behind Dead Space. I think survival horror should give you the feeling that you are so underprepared for what is happening around you and the chances of you getting out alive aren't great. I really felt sorry for Isaac.
