I remember reading a case study that showed drinking up to 2 units of alcohol a day was not only harmless but in fact beneficial for a babe
A case study? That would imply that it was a singular event that was tracked by a researcher. There are lots of case studies that are complete flukes, and are generally published as ways of making the scientific community aware of such things.

If you mistyped, which is certainly possible, and it was a study which actually controlled alcohol consumption by women I can't imagine getting that grant through the oversight boards at the University at which it took place.

It'd be great if you could find that link, because it'd be a pretty interesting paper regardless.

No, never. It's nine months of your time vs possibly a lifetime of someone else's. It doesn't matter how small a chance there is, I'd never take it.

Balanced out by a study that said that any alcohol whatsoever had a negative effect on the child.

Really, people choose the studies that back up their position, because studies have proven pretty much everything (even conflicting viewpoints). The only studies we can really trust are the ones that involve literally tens of thousands of people.

I´d say: "Holy shit, i´m pregnant? Abortion away!"

And that´d be the end of that. Simple, right?
Abortion is a terrible experience that will scar a woman for life. No matter if you're for or against it, you should acknowledge the severe consequences of abortion.
It is nothing to joke about.

That being said, I really don't think people should drink when pregnant. Yes, there are plenty of people who could control themselves and cause no harm to the fetus through responsible alcohol consumption, but really, its not worth the risk. The mother's diet has a great affect on what a baby prefers after birth, including influencing interests of alcohol down the road. Everyone's different, so you can't really know how much alcohol IS safe for a fetus.

The father abstaining from alcohol for support is a really sweet thing to do, and is a good sign that the man will be dedicated to his newly-enlarged family.

No way. I'd never do anything that'd potentially harm a child. Especially if that child was, ya know, depending on me for every piece of nutrients and oxygen it gets. >.<

With things like Foetal Alcohol Syndrome it's just not worth stunting someone else's life so YOU can have a drink. To be honest it seems kind of selfish to do something like that.

It's one of those things you don't really want to chance, then again some people are bound to think differently.

Speaking as a doctor, a single glass of red wine once a week wouldn't do any harm what so ever.

It has been found that children of mothers who drank red wine during their pregnancy, have less behavioral problems as well as cognitive defects than those who abstained from alcohol completely for nine months.

Other than this, girls who were born to women who drank wine occasionally, showed less emotional as well as peer issues than those who were born from women who did not have wine during their pregnancy.

And that is 100% true.

Except the doctor part.

Also, this reminded me of something I read in the newspaper a few couple of years ago.

Were I a women and pregnant I wouldn't risk it, sure, I'd miss it, maybe a lot, even if just for the taste. Nothing like a cold pint on a warm day but there's no way I'd risk it. Of course thats all completely hypothetical not being a women nor pregnant.

I wouldn't drink at all. My mum went one step further and didn't take any medication during her pregnancy either, not even the odd Paracetamol.

I would say, better safe than sorry. Or rather better safe than FAS.

Really, fetal alcohol syndrome has a nasty effect on it's sufferer. It causes brain damage, or more importantly, just wreak general havoc on the nervous system as a whole. It also stunts growth, and can cause other diagnosable conditions such as epilepsy.

This is why no drinking should be done during pregnancy. An otherwise healthy child could become seriously screwed up.

It's an easy subject for me since I don't drink anyway (Turning 21 was a big "Yup. Whatever."). From what I've heard, you can risk it to an extent, but TVTropes says that the common effort in media to have pregnant women even avoid touching a drop of alcohol is a bit overblown.

Guiness and Red wine have both been shown to be beneficial for women (and babies) during pregnancy - Guiness particularly because of the high alcohol content.

There seems to be a disconnect between the case cited by the OP of FAS - seriously, half a bottle of wine and 3 of vodka? - and the concept of any alcohol at all. FAS does not result from small amounts, it results from ridiculous amounts - and that which was mentioned in the OP is the kind that shouldn't really be drunk at all by anyone anyway.

Drinking while pregnant is extremely irresponsible. Just don't do it!

If you can't live 9months without a drink, you're a fucking alcoholic.

No, that's just stupid! But then I would never dink alcohol, parly because it's bad for you, but mostly because it tastes like piss.
