I don't drink at all so my vote is no.

However, I don't think it's too bad for a pregnant woman to sip a little once a week or so. That much alcohol is negligible.

Granted, I don't see the value of sipping a little alcohol. Perhaps for the taste?

In France, if you say to them "I can't have a glass of wine because I'm pregnant" they look at you like you're insane.

Minor amounts of booze consumption, that is at most a glass of wine per week, should be "acceptable".

Speaking as a doctor, a single glass of red wine once a week wouldn't do any harm what so ever.

It has been found that children of mothers who drank red wine during their pregnancy, have less behavioral problems as well as cognitive defects than those who abstained from alcohol completely for nine months.

Other than this, girls who were born to women who drank wine occasionally, showed less emotional as well as peer issues than those who were born from women who did not have wine during their pregnancy.

And that is 100% true.

Except the doctor part.

Also, this reminded me of something I read in the newspaper a few couple of years ago.

Yes, in moderation only. For most people, they do not stop at 1 proper serving once a week.
And those who do, it only helps them from the benefit that Red Wine Contains vitamin B. Not because it was wine.

I have heard that one drink a day will not harm the child.

Of course, it likely on a case-to-case basis, but one is probably okay.

Although, if I was female and pregnant, I wouldn't drink at all, just to be on the safe side.
That's actually a common misconception. Any amount of alcohol at any time can harm the baby. It's just a matter of when your luck will catch up with you.

I'm not a woman so I can't get pregnant (obviously), but hypothetically speaking just to answer the question, I would not drink if I were pregnant not only for the well being of the child but also because I don't drink anyway (I kinda get sick with it only touching my tongue, I know lame) so there'd be no reason for me to drink in the first place.... which I guess makes this post useless (>o<)

Wow, the education system is failing people.

1 serving of ANY kind of alcohol has the same negative impacts on the body. A 4oz glass of wine is just as bad for you as a shot of vodka. It's foolishness to think otherwise.
The 4oz glass of wine is nowhere near as a bad as a bottle of vodka, as the OP described some women were drinking, which was my point.
The great the concentration of alcohol, the greater the chance of a problem.

To be fair, I didn't exactly clarify that and I realise this.

Okay learning some of this stuff from medical school and common sense: Is it ok to have a drink while pregnant? Answer is NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO even if you have one drink the entire time you are prenant is very dangerous to the child. However if a woman has a drink the only time it is safe is like within the first week after that it is dangerous to the child's development. As for after birth a glass of wine a day is fine if it is when you are breast feeding a child because by the time you are breast feeding the child again the sugar and alchol has broken down enough to cause no harm to the child, but remember only one glass a wine when breast feeding.

If you have even 1 drink your baby will die!

Seriously you people are overreacting. something like 90% of australian women drink alcohol. For most people, you don't know that you are pregnant the day it happens. Generally you miss a period, take a test, and then go and see a doctor. It is therefore not unreasonable to assume that up to 90% of pregnant women had at least a drink or 2 in the first 4 or 5 weeks of their pregnancy.

See graph below on infant mortality. Safest time ever, and one of the safest places in the world to have a baby in spite of the odd drink.

http://www.google.com/publicdata?ds=wb-wdi&met=sp_dyn_imrt_in&idim=country:AUS&dl=en&hl=en&q=infant+mortality#met=sp_dyn_imrt_in&idim=country:AUS:USA&tdim=true

My wife had a drink or 2 (like most women in the western world) during the pregnancy of both of our kids and they are fine (like most children in the western world).

Relax. 1 glass of wine will not kill your baby.

I hate kids as it is, so if I was going to have a a baby the last thing I would do is drink and have there be a chance it could be born retarded because of that.

The problem is Women can often drink heavily in the time between getting pregnant and realising that they're pregnant. We actually had a tute on this a few weeks ago, I believe the current literature supports a standard drink a day being harmless, but it's advised to cut it out completely for safety's sake.

Guiness and Red wine have both been shown to be beneficial for women (and babies) during pregnancy - Guiness particularly because of the high alcohol content.
I think you mean 'high iron content', which is true for all stouts.
Oops. Yeah, I mean high iron/high calorie count.

It's not confirmed or denied how much is ok as of yet, however the effect of consumption are known, and due to the ethical situation it's hard for people to determine in a controlled area how much (or how little) you can drink while Pregnant

If I was pregnant I think I'd need a drink, or something stronger.. being a bloke. However in all seriousness women certainly should drink whilst pregnant.

If you want to drink at all while pregnant, then have an abortion. I honestly can't see why that would even be an issue, alcohol is a chemical which changes neurological functions of the brain and affects dopamine production as well as glucose levels. In a developing fetus that can cause severe damage, as is shown by fetal alcohol syndrome. Yes those are severe cases, but there's no reason to risk even the slightest damage to your unborn child if you can help it. People would freak out if a pregnant mother said "It would be okay if I just had one cigarette a day". Any harmful chemicals absorbed will transfer to the fetus, and they will be filtered, but it's not a chance I would ever take. But hey, if you want to raise a child with a serious disability, or even risk it and spend the rest of your life wondering if your child would've been smarter had you not taken those drinks then more power to you.
