Poll: Futurama vs Family Guy?

The world of Futurama just seems to have so much more potential for humor. And theres dozens and dozens of little sight gags, or gags you have to know advanced electronics or math or something to get.
Also, it made me tear up on more than one occasion. Family Guy's never done that for me. Dont tell me none of you ever cried to the end of Jurrasic Bark.
That's why I like futurama better.

Futurama. Not even close.

Family Guy is a lot of toilet humor and it's kind of like South Park now where I think (keywords: I THINK) the creators know that the only reason people watch the show is to see how far they'll push the envelope. Family Guy also uses cheap cutaway gags that are funny once, but can sometimes go on for way to long. The earlier stuff is okay, but a lot of the shows material of the past year or so has been terrible, both in storytelling and in what it brings to the table in humor.

And truthfully, sometimes the jokes feel forced. As if they shove it in just because it's an omg they did not just go there kind of joke.

Futurama has some great humor, and while it pushes limits, it never really gets too dirty. The stories, the characters, and the world are also much more memorable to me. And sometimes, the series can hit nerves. I think one of the saddest episodes of a TV show in general was the episode Jurassic Bark. I dare you to watch that and not have tears in your eyes afterwards. The show has moments that break through the humor and show the characters in different lights.

Futurama has jokes, but also tells stories and offers moments that make you think. It's a show with a lot of small jokes, some which only the smartest people can understand (i'm not one of them sadly), that can sometimes make you think "wow! They put that in there!". Family Guy has some great episodes as well, but the show really gets it's ratings from its dead center jokes.

But to each their own. Family Guy has earned its place and I do enjoy watching it every now and again, but nine times out of ten, if Futurama and Family Guy are on at the same time, I'll be watching Futurama.

I prefer Futurama to Family Guy (Family Guy is basically the Dane Cook of animated TV shows).

But as to your South Park comment, actually the show started off crude but then worked it's way into a social commentary of sorts (while still using crude humor to make a point).

Futurama, every episode I've watched so far made the show up as huge, createive, and fun. It's has a well-realized story and decent humor, as well as a well-rounded set of characters.

Family Guy has it's moments, and I respect Seth Macfarlane's determination not to be bogged down by censorship, but his attempts are pretty crude, it makes sense if you want to cross some lines to stand out in the animation department, but Seth really is trying too hard.

Im just going to count this be the numbers of episodes I love.
Futurama- About 16 episodes spread across the original 4 seasons, Benders Big Score. Havent seen the new Comedy Central episodes but I shall get them on DVD when theyre available. In the UK.
Family Guy- Spent 5 minuites trying to remember anything that didnt elevate to meme status, failed.

So Futurama gets my vote.

Ironically I actually own the first season of Family Guy on DVD, where the only Futurama DVD's I own are for the uncut feature lengths.

All of the singing in Family Guy bothers me. Yes Seth, I know you took singing lessons (which you seem very pround of) but I don't want to hear you sing every single episode.

Seth actually sang on Futurama: into the wild green yonder, and it was awesome. But he was used because he could sing, not because he wanted to sing.

They also have their own languade. 2 actually! And one of them is really annoying to decrypt, but it's all part of the joke. These kinds of jokes, that 90% of the audience won't get or see, are my favourites. And Futurama excels at them, while Family Guy doesn't even have them.
One of my favourite behind the scenes stories from Futurama is when they proposed the joke about 4 million lines of BASIC in kif gets knocked up a notch. One of the writes said that not even one percent of the audience would get that joke, to which another one responded: "Fuck them!"

Futurama holds wit and surreal humour which is awesome, but Family Guy has been the amount of dark humour I love.
Both are amazing but if I had to pick one then it'd have to be Family Guy, people just don't seem to get how smart shows like Family Guy and South Park are with their humour.

You must be talking about some other show. Parasites Lost, Time Keeps On Slippin', and The Farnsworth Parabox are episodes that use subtly to progress Fry and Leela's relationship by being predominantly humor based, while The Sting and The Devil's Hands Are Idle Playthings are much more upfront about their relationship.

The original run also took pride in its very strict continuity. The Why of Fry is connected to many episodes that have aired throughout its run, including how Fry is not affected by the powers of the brains (The Day the Earth Stood Stupid) because he was missing the delta brain wave due to being his own grandfather (Roswell That Ends Well). If you watch the first episode in the series (Space Pilot 3000), you can see Nibbler's shadow as the character tilts back putting him in the chamber, and then you see his shadow along with Fry's in Jurassic Bark due to the alteration of history.

You obviously have rarely watched family guy, if any at all.

I have been watching the show since it came out, and there is not many fart jokes at all. There may be a few in an episode here or there, but not many at all. Don't watch one episode then say "This show is full of nothing but stupid". Good job at being judgmental.

I also like how you act is if i don't like Futurama in your post. If you would have correctly read my post, you would have seen that i love both shows and have been watching them both since they came out. I ALSO loved how you described Futurama. I got a good kick out of that.

Are you kidding? This is a comedy cartoon. When I was 11 years old I was able to appreciate it for what it was. Don't make Futurama look like some type of show scripted by nothing but PhD's.

have we watched the same show? because i can't think of anything in futurama that appealed to anyone over the age of twelve. the jokes are all aimed at kids and there are no 'deep' moments.

Well yea, they have much more educated writers and you can always feel a sense of commentary on idiotic tendencies of the human race. Also they have really neat technical jokes that say only a specialist would get. Like a physicist, a computer scientist, or an ecologist (those are some I have picked up on). Also come on - the new season for example - they go forward in time enough that the universe begins again - absolutely awesome (and a neat not too over the top what if). Also Leonardo Da Vinci being the an alien that is the stupidest being on planet Vinci??? Genius! If you have toured Rome - lots of really cool references - also to the Da Vinci Code. Just some examples.
