Got to hand that one over to Futurama, Family Guy has its moments, and quite a few of them, but Futurama is in a whole other category alltogether; can't even begin to imagine how it would be if I was studying natural sciences and could catch/understand all the math and physics based injokes.
It's awesome when you understand the jokes. My favourite is in the beginning of luck of the fryrish, when the horses finish by a quantum finish, and the professor complaines about cheating after they measure it and he loses. Hilarious!! There's more to it, but I don't want to ruin the joke.

Futurama is much more intelligent and there is less of the EXACT SAME JOKE. Plus, the same joke is made fun of on the show. Southpark was right, effin seacows write their material.

Back in family guys earlier days (around season 1-4), I would say it was EQUAL too Futurama. But, Family Guy is to busy trying to be rude and controversial rather than tying to be funny... sigh. In my opinion it should've ended after season 5 or 6. Atleast then it would be remembered as awesome like Futurama!

Family Guy's random humor is more apealing to me
Oh god, I hope you aren't one of those people who thinks randomness is so funny and cool and who then proceeds to be random as an excuse for comedy. Sorry if that sounds a bit aggressive but I couldn't help myself, I meet so many people who do that.
I never thought that randomness could be looked down upon that bad.
I just like jokes that come out of nowhere and give you a "what the hell just happened? :p" feeling.
Like this one:

What is freaking scary, is right after I watched your little clip, I started a movie I had postponed for a couple of days, and right where I left off, not 20 seconds later that song start playing in the movie. I thought for a moment I left your video open lolol.

OT: Anyways, futurama wins hands down, while there are some really unfunny ones, some are just inspired. One of the first that comes to mind is when Bender gets spaced and the civilization starts growing on him. I have yet to figure out if the series is pro or anti God.

Futurama. Not even close.

Family Guy is a lot of toilet humor and it's kind of like South Park now where I think (keywords: I THINK) the creators know that the only reason people watch the show is to see how far they'll push the envelope. Family Guy also uses cheap cutaway gags that are funny once, but can sometimes go on for way to long. The earlier stuff is okay, but a lot of the shows material of the past year or so has been terrible, both in storytelling and in what it brings to the table in humor.

And truthfully, sometimes the jokes feel forced. As if they shove it in just because it's an omg they did not just go there kind of joke.

Futurama has some great humor, and while it pushes limits, it never really gets too dirty. The stories, the characters, and the world are also much more memorable to me. And sometimes, the series can hit nerves. I think one of the saddest episodes of a TV show in general was the episode Jurassic Bark. I dare you to watch that and not have tears in your eyes afterwards. The show has moments that break through the humor and show the characters in different lights.

Futurama has jokes, but also tells stories and offers moments that make you think. It's a show with a lot of small jokes, some which only the smartest people can understand (i'm not one of them sadly), that can sometimes make you think "wow! They put that in there!". Family Guy has some great episodes as well, but the show really gets it's ratings from its dead center jokes.

But to each their own. Family Guy has earned its place and I do enjoy watching it every now and again, but nine times out of ten, if Futurama and Family Guy are on at the same time, I'll be watching Family Guy.
THAT EQUALS TRUTH

Also, stop crying about Family Guy being crude. What are you, 12 years old? Put your big boy ears on and stop complaining, you little girls.
One might say you're 12 years old if you can't appreciate the complex insinuations and deeply psychological subtleties of futurama and opt for 30 minutes of fart jokes, racist jokes, and other things that have as much depth as a reflection pool.
have we watched the same show? because i can't think of anything in futurama that appealed to anyone over the age of twelve. the jokes are all aimed at kids and there are no 'deep' moments.

Well, let's see. Futurama makes me laugh, and Family Guy makes me so bored I want to slip into a coma before I can watch more of it. Futurama please.

Did you mean to say you'll be watching Futurama? It sounded like you liked it much better in the rest of your post. I find your ending confusing, honestly.
Yep you are right. I was very tired when I typed that this morning. lol

futurama to me is boring, the jokes are basic and just not funny. however i'm not sure if thats just due to having seen every episode ad nauseum.
Now, I've seen every episode of Futurama except the new ones at least 100 times each, and I still laugh out loud at them. Well, all except the bee one, that's the only one I didn't like. It's my favourite show, and the one I always go to when I'm bored. But to each his own.

Actually, to all these people saying Family Guy is just crude toilet humour...well, it's not. A lot of the humour is quite sophisticated. Sure, they do throw in the odd fart gag, but I really don't think they go OTT at all. Family Guy is one of the funniest things out there.

South Park too. Sometimes they go a bit far - like the episode in the newest season where the write a sequel to Catcher in the Rye and everyone pukes? I didn't find that funny. But some of their stuff is very political. People just judge it because the animation is "bad" (although it's intentional).

Futurama is still hilarious. Funnier than the Simpsons I think. Just some of the stuff they come out with is so dry but classic, like in Season 2 A Pharaoh to Remember; "you don't have to go home but you can't stay here". One of my favourite lines.
But the thing is, it is not just an odd fart gag, there are frequent stupid gags like that just too keep the younger and often asinine audience interested. Of course it can be funny and highly political but do you think it is the political episodes that take a look on the controversial topics in the world that sell? Also not to offend Family Guy, but it seems that they frequently re-package jokes and they often don't seem to end the episodes properly. Examples of the aforementioned problems are:
Remember when Lois had to make a choice to raise a baby or have an abortion? And the episode went through all the ramifications of it and it was and times very serious, the entire episode ended when Peter kicks open the door and says "We got the abortion!" Another time like this is when Peter becomes a psychic and ends the entire episode when he says "Yeaaahhh, I'm not a psychic!"
Remember the absolutely inane Conway Twitty cut away jokes? They lasted for like 3 minutes each and they were painful as hell, once they did it twice in an episode.
The times when Peter had to fight the giant chicken? It was funny the first minute but it dragged on and on, they do it in three separate episodes and then later they make references to it in other separate episodes.

I could go and on and on about more episodes which use and abuse the same formats of humor but I think this post is long enough. I know you are probably going to say "But some people found that stuff funny!" All I can say is, it pissed more people off than it made people laugh.
This is all true, but then again, they make fun of themselves. For example in one of the more recent episodes (I forget which) they have a cut away gag in which Quagmire thinks me is getting the spin-off*, and he says something along the lines of "So long suckers. Have fun with your Conway Twitty and Giant Chicken jokes!"

Admittedly, yes, I do fast forward through these bits. They're funny the first time but after that do get a bit tedious, but apart from that I think, personally, Family Guy is brilliant. Of course, each to their own :)

*What about the Cleveland Show? I think that has some moments of hilarity but the rest is just above average.
Futurama makes fun of itself as well, and it does it in more interesting ways IMO. For example in the anthology of interest 2, they introduce 2 new characters just for a joke, and then they're never heard of again. This is a very subtle reference to Scruffy, who was introduced in the first anthology of interest only to be killed off, and then stayed on as a character. And btw, if you're looking for random comedy, Scruffy's for you! And he's funnier than Family Guy's randomness IMO. Also, everybody seem to hate the cleveland show, and for a good reason. It isn't funny at all. But as you said, to each their own.

I'm suprised to even think people might think Family Guy above Futurama. Futurama is I.Qs ahead of Family Guy.

I love them both, but would pick Family Guy if I had to watch one of them.

Although my favourite overall is American Dad.

No, because clearly you haven't seen Futurama if you think that it has no deep moments. (Jurassic Bark, Luck of the Fryish, Harlem Globetrotters, etc. The list can really go on) Maybe you just don't get the subtleties of Futurama's more intelligent social commentary? Maybe, as the poster you quoted said, you truly are a twelve year old with as much depth as a reflection pool.

I used to love Family Guy, but as I grew older I just find the show more and more juvenile, and in some episodes offensive. It's changed way too much from it's original, and this image helps me better than I could ever say;

Futurama, however, is timeless as far as I'm concerned, which is funny when you think about it. Some high-concept episodes (like the one-way time machine) are great, and it never relies on randomness or childish jokes to get their humor across. It's just a better rounded show overall.

I used to watch Family Guy back when it was on FOX at about the same time as the Simpsons. It was funny. Then it kept getting moved and taken off the air and such. I tried watching the new episodes, and it's not very funny anymore. Maybe I matured and it was always stupid (well I knew it was stupid but it was funny in my earlier viewings), or it had just gotten worse, but my appreciation for it dwindled.

I only watched Futurama on occasional reruns or something like that, but I didn't really know about it back when I would watch Family Guy. I have started watching it more recently since they've been airing it on Comedy Central. I find it far funnier than Family Guy. I still watch the occasional Family Guy episode, but it's only a little funny.

Now, to everybody comparing Family Guy to South Park, strange thing about me upcoming. I enjoy South Park as well. I think this might be because South Park, while crude like Family Guy only more so, is clearly being ironic. While most Family Guy I've ever seen is just trying to make crude jokes for their own sake to appeal to that kind of humor, South Park applies crude concepts in a more sophisticated way, while still being over-the-top disgusting at times. I know it's off-topic, but I don't care.

Futurama has it's charm, but I don't find it very funny. It's interesting and some of the episodes are interesting, but I don't find it funny.

Family guy makes me laugh, if not at least chuckle at the jokes. So I voted Family Guy.

Jurassic Bark, luck of the fryrish, Godfellows, the why of fry, time keeps on slipping, why must I be a crustaceon in love, the bee episode, the first and second movies. Need I go on, cuz I can... Each of those episodes/movies have deep emotional conflict and true character development, and if you need a specific example from them, please ask. The deepest moment I've ever seen on Family Guy was when Brian wanted to kill himself, and that followed 30 minutes of eating shit and puking. Man I hated that episode, made me stop caring about Family Guy.

Family guy did a really horrible one minute unfunny 'joke' that involved only nodding then they reused said joke like 30 seconds later...that taints my view of family guy.

Futurama is original and funny.

You obviously have rarely watched family guy, if any at all.

I have been watching the show since it came out, and there is not many fart jokes at all. There may be a few in an episode here or there, but not many at all. Don't watch one episode then say "This show is full of nothing but stupid". Good job at being judgmental.

I also like how you act is if i don't like Futurama in your post. If you would have correctly read my post, you would have seen that i love both shows and have been watching them both since they came out. I ALSO loved how you described Futurama. I got a good kick out of that.

the complex insinuations and deeply psychological subtleties of futurama
Are you kidding? This is a comedy cartoon. When I was 11 years old I was able to appreciate it for what it was. Don't make Futurama look like some type of show scripted by nothing but PhD's.

Now, if you'll please stfu and understand that i love both shows.
