i know this is a thread aimed at guys but im a gamer girlfriend and actually right now my boyfriend is more into movies so theres a lot of me nerding out to old RTSs or an RPG or world of warcraft with him politely interested. Ive had gamer boyfriends but maybe its just the types of games i play or my tendency to get addicted to games (some RTS s ive played for two or three days straight) but i usually end up playing more games than them...to their usual chagrin

I would say that what guys really want is a girl who will watch _them_ play videogames and make appreciative noises at regular intervals.
This is very true. I regularly have to play badly so that guys will still feel manly and spend most of the time just watching others play and commenting on their perfect choice of combo.

Yawn.
lolwut? That doesn't make much sense...
Guys don't like women they feel threatened by. That's why for so much of our history women have been deeply socially and sexually repressed. All because of men who were afraid of losing their boners.

Adversely, girls don't like men they feel threatened by either. Which is why so many girls love having a gay guy friend. A guy they can feel completely comfortable with. It's just that women have never been in power enough to impose their insecurities on us like we have on them.
If there are guys who feel threatened by girls beating them at video games... then that's kind of sad.

I'd say that's kind of a generalization. There are LOTS of guys who feel totally comfortable with girls being better than them. I am a little offended by this.
it is a generalization, but its still a thing that exists. I mean i have plenty of male friends who im on equal video game terms with, but there are plenty who feel the need to "backseat game" while im playing. The worst is usually when i play shooters with guys, theyll point out where the enemies are, tell me when to get behind cover, when to switch weapons, sometimes when to fire. It gets really old.

My first relationship ended recently and the only thing she really played was Scribblenauts.

My wife plays Plants Vs Zombies a hell of a lot. She also loves old school Genesis and SNES games, like Sonic 1-3, SMB, Donkey Kong, etc. I also got her in to Titan Quest, so I'm hoping to get Diablo III when it comes out. Mostly she plays the Cake Mania style games.

That's a big problem anymore. Games aren't as accessible as they use to be. Someone who picks up gaming for the first time is going to spend 10 minutes in Mass Effect then turn the console off. While anyone can pick up and enjoy super mario world or old sonic the hedgehog games. Why have the consoles abandoned these kinds of games?

I believe that the market is still there, it has just been relegated to the indie developers. Places like XBLA and Steam have great selections of old school styled platformers and the like. I don't think that the big publishers will really touch something like that becuse there would be no way they could justify a $60 price tag for a nice looking game done in 2D when they spend millions developing Call of Battlefield Brothers and then only charge $60.

I'd like to see more major releases done in the style of say Bionic Commando Re-armed. They game was quite fun, and challenging, but easy to pick up.

Honestly girls who game sometimes have the same problem about finding someone who respects them as gamers not merely as the novelty of being a female who games. I'm not one of those "rah, I am woman, see me game!" I didn't start dating til I was in University, and now I'm engaged, granted I'm picky and really didn't feel like bothering with dating in high school.

My fiancé and I are about equal with gaming tastes, we prefer co-op games to play together, doesn't really matter what type of game, as long as there is co-op campaign. We'll sometimes foray into multiplayer, mostly if my brother in-law is playing (that's the FPS types). And we'll do team based PVP with friends.

I don't know if I would say that it would be vital that I was dating someone that gamed, but it's helpful mostly because I'm a pretty big junkie (my collection is around 500 games, and I'm only about a third complete?). So it was just really important that I had someone that understood my love of video games, and the fact that he plays games with me, and WANTS to play with me is just icing on the cake.

My word of advice to anyone really is, don't be creepy. Don't be one of those people that try to flex their virtual muscle by saying "I bet I can beat you at x" I work part-time at a LAN centre, and I get all kinds of gamers coming in, it doesn't matter what gender, you get all types. If you're interested in a gamer, just try to find out what kind of games they like, or suggest some easy type co-op games to play together if they're not a gamer but are kinda interested in at least trying. And most importantly, don't ignore your significant other for a game, I have a wonderful story of how this guy lost his wife because of Gears of War 2, which I won't elaborate unless someone wants to hear it.
Did he do co op with her and shout at her or something ? Elaborate please.
Yes please elaborate. The story has got to be good.

Nope, they always mace me when I ask them to handle my "joystick", and not with the spray but hit me with a mace of metal. In all seriousnes, I would like a girlfriend who is into games, or would at least accept that games is my favourite hobby. That is what I want

This thread again?

Hi. Gamer girlfriend, right here. **waves**

I've also had gamer girlfriends. I don't know why everyone thinks this is so rare these days - there are tons of female gamers now, more than... well, ever before. JRPGs recruit more female gamers than any other genre (which is why people should stop hating on them), particularly games like Persona 3 and 4 that have a strong focus on story. Also Xenosaga and Final Fantasy. And, the WRPG Dragon Age has done it's fair share as well. Great games all.

I commented on this thread's identical twin last month. Check the archives, please.
I would never inflict Zenosaga on someone else. That's gotta be their own choice, like doing crack, or whatever.

I think the emphasis on story isn't really what drives a lot of gamers, but the emphasis on character that story-driven games necessitate.

Most female gamers that I've found who are interested in story-driven games actually don't talk much about the narrative, or plot twists... they seem more interested in how the characters act, and their mannerisms and such.

Just an observation tho, and certainly not a scientific analysis.

Pop music and you don't seem right...

And God damn I wish, I may attempt to get them into gaming though.!

I am a gamer girlfriend. I've been gaming my whole life, mostly platformer's and JRPG's, recently gotten into WoW and just today gotten the new pokemon game. Though I've been gaming as far back as i remember and love nothing more than talking about my favourites I'm really more of a casual gamer, Maybe a jack of all Games at best, not really being great at anything. I'll pretty much try anything but usually get really annoyed and get huffy if i keep losing. If I didn't have to work I would more than likely live on consoles.

Its kinda funny really, my parents didn't really game as much as i did 'til i left home, now my dad lives on his Xbox and my mam gets achievements on the games he wont play lol.

my girlfriend loves games, although she tends to go for older games which have more playability rather than newer games.

She's currently re-obsessed with the rollercoaster tycoon games. Also she kicks my ass on CSS. Every. Damn. Time.

That's what I said. The character is the most important part of any story. Or, to put it another way, no matter how epic a story is, it will be sucky and boring without good characters.

I hadn't even considered the existence of non-character based stories. I honestly don't see how something like that could exist.

Anyway, we're off topic here.

I have never had a girlfriend period so... No, I have not. I am too shy to start a conversation with anyone I do not know really well, let alone actually asking a girl out.
