ITS A GAME. a guy playing a girl or a girl playing a guy in a GAME has no reflection on their preferences in REAL LIFE, and should not be taken a a literal reflection of their actual gender.
Only a friggin idiot would have issues or jeer others for playing a character of opposite gender on a GAME.

Almost every time I play Left 4 Dead online I use Zoey.

My second character in Fallout 3 was also a female.

Some people like to identify with their character.
Other people like to look at their character.

Guys who play girl characters are typically the later.
But not always. With enough freedom i can get in touch with my anima (jungean psychology) side.

I do however like to look at the characters as well.

Most of the time I play as male characters, like myself, and just make them look cool.

But after a couple of characters I might make a female character, just for fun. But I generally stay as a male character.

I'm actually kinda annoyed at how revealing some of the clothes are for some of the female characters. My main example is the elementalist class in Guild Wars.

If I make a female character, I try them to make them close to Colonel Samantha Carter from Stargate. A strong female character that was good as if not better than most of the best guys and that was admirable.

I tend to stay male online, cause if I wanted to imagine I had tits I'd be jumping on the sofa with socks in my t-shirt singing pop music...

Or as I call it, "Drunken Monday"
Pretty big socks... or small breasts... just fat nipples really. :/ Anyway, nope. I am always a guy... not always human but always a male.

Generally, if I play a female character, it's so I can act out my repressed crossdressing fantasies with less fear of ridicule because I think it would be more suitable for the character I'm making to be female.

For some reason, I seem to have a preference for female custom characters in most games; this occurred to me after noticing that every single one of my WoW characters but my main was female...

Exceptions: City of Heroes characters (for whatever reason, I'm far more evenly split between male and female characters), and any game with female costumes that are blatant fanservice (Guild Wars).

Non-custom character example: I refuse to play as anyone but Fei Yen in Virtual On. Don't ask me why.

Regardless, however, I don't pretend to be anything other than my male self, short of expressing my unrelenting man-crushes on various personages. ...okay, there was one time for a while when I deliberately spoke androgynously, but that was only on Livejournal where no one read it.

Same. I think the only female character I kept in that game was a ranger, for that reason.

I don't get why people switch genders in online games. I would prefer to think that people who play male characters are males and people who play female characters are females, but I know that's not true.

I've done it before but I can't say that I'd really recommend it. I always seemed to have less clout with the groups that I was in while I was on my female hunter than my male priest or warrior, and if you're in vent but don't have a mic there are a bunch of people saying she and her and it's kind of weird knowing that they mean you. I actually did group with a girl who was using a male character once. Not really relevant but I guess it's worth mentioning. It took me awhile to catch on because you don't usually think of girls doing that.

With the abundance of hurly-burly macho lead characters out there, yeah I like to play a female character now and again. Or maybe its that Elven Legacy chick in the bottom right corner that keeps making me want to roll female toons... :p

I sometimes play male characters even though I'm female, just to avoid all the harassment.

In non-MMO's, I go with what looks cool, male or female. Maybe a slight preference for Male.

in MMO's, I have a bit of a preference for females. I have acknowledged that although obsessing over a character is freaky, the characters in a game are attractive and a pleasure to look at. And if Im going to star at the ass of someone for dozens and dozens of hours, it might as well be a chick.

I've noticed that if there are guys playing as girl characters, it is usually for one of three reasons.
1) They want to mooch off of the guy populace that want to supply the "girl" with stuff to make "her" life easier and to steal the one "girl" off the internet from the other female-starved men of the gaming nation.
2) They don't want to stare at a man's derriere for the entire duration of their play-time.
3) Sometimes playing a girl character is more fun (i.e games where the class the player wants is strictly female).
You forgot games where the sex of the class changes the stats. But it No# 2 for me.

I don't play games online, but when I play an RPG or something and design a character I often do pick a female character.

Truthfully there aren't a lot of games where the main character is a woman, and it's a good change, and being able to design my own character means she doesn't have to look like a porn star like in other games where you play as a female (i'm looking at you, Tomb Raider, and every fighting game ever made.) Call me a feminist or whatever, but its good to design some attractive, yet strong, not-so-huge-chested character. Not seen very often and it draws me into the game more because of that. It's also better to see the graphical capabilities used to make a female character rather than a male character, because it's better to enjoy their eye candy on a girl and not a guy.

But if its a game where I feel like i'm going to be hugely immersed in the experience then i'm more likely to play as a guy, better to put myself in his shoes.

If it's a silly game like Saints Row 2... Well in that particular case i'm a transvestite with a 5 o'clock shadow and a deep cockney accent.
