I would.

For the simple reason that I brought my personal jetpack with me.

Then let us rephrase- would you give your jetpack away to a woman or child?

Personally I'd do what the cook did- fashion a raft from chairs, get absolutely plastered with alcohol, then drift around on the raft not even feeling the cold until a lifeboat picked me up- either a half full one or a boat that had some passengers already die.

After that, I'd be set for life making commercials for that brand of alcohol ever after ;)

A kid? - Yes, depending on the age, a teenager a few years younger than me...probably no.
A Mother? - Depends on the age of her kids, if they are in their teens or maybe even pre-teens, I will see myself as having priority.
A Woman who is a stranger? - No, this is equality. I don't think I am old enough to throw a way my life for something so meaningless such as honour or to be like a "real" man.

By the way, there are other people on the ship, I would expect them not to judge me as they don't seem to be giving up their seats.

If I had been on the titanic and realized it was sinking, I would have found myself an excellent table with great floating capabilities and make sure to jump the ship way ahead of time. Most of the last lifeboats were overthrown by drowning people anyhow.

Fuck I didn't realize there were 12 pages of this. No, I wouldn't give my seat to a woman just because she was a woman. Children though? Yeah... and there are several people I know personally that I would give it to, e.g. my girlfriend.

No.

Oh, actually, children, probably. Would I give my life for someone purely because they are female, however? Fuck that, I am not obliged to protect them- Women are not inherently worth more than I am.

Yes. A noble death is a a good death, and you can ask for no more than a good death!

Martime tradition states women and children first. So yes I would.

Besides, I wouldn't want to end up looking like men who survived the Titanic (most were thought of as cowards to survive when so many other men had chosen to go down with the ship. J. Bruce Ismay was given the worst social treatment).

Looks like a majority of folks aren't sexist... Well I am! So I'm giving up my seat for the lady. Really, is chivalry all that bad? It support the golden rule you know...

Children, yes ... younger women, yes, pregnant women, yes, men with whom have a significant relationship with a pregnant woman ... yes.

That and I'm infertile. Sorta bleeds into my decision making a bit.

The way I see it, there's a far greater chance of me dying before I'm 60 than living past it. So I have less to lose than someone younger than me, or even equal to my age. That and it's about priorities ... no kids depending on me means I'm more expendable.

Elderly people? Hell no ...

Well ...

Maybe elderly people who had grandkids on the boat with them at the time.

I think that questions like this one are a bit pointless because most people haven't been in a situation like that and therefore don't know what they would really do. People don't know how it feels in such a situation and many think that they would actually do it.
I'm not saying that no one would do it but if they were confronted with that question in reality it would be much less people doing it.

I probably would.

Since honor is a big deal for me...plus my ego is big enough to make me believe I'd survive in the water anyway.

EDIT: Correction: I'm pretty sure my ego would just float and carry me to land.

Important to know is that this isn't about ''what would you do?''
This is about ''what do you think you would do?''

Which is an entirely different question, but interesting and not at all pointless.

Only if it were my wife or child.

I know I know, cruel evil bastard for not being noble to perfect strangers and all that but hey. I make no pretences.

it really is a strategically poor decision the disadvantages of keeping your seat do not outweigh the benefits of giving up the seat namely none if i was a man i would say no if all people are to me equal the same must go for everything even for life boats
