Ok, so between everyone in the thread we have found that their is no hate at all for harry potter. Let alone when you consider the hate their is for Twilight, George Lucas, Michael Bay and errr the jonas brothers (yeah, that will do).

You know, just to balance this whole thing out and make the post seem necessary I'll pretend to hate Harry Potter when I'm just indifferent to the whole thing. You know, just so no one is wasting their time.

I WOULD TOTALLY TAKE A SWAT TEAM TO THAT SHITTY SCHOOL AND FUCK UP THE PLACE. WHAT THE FUCK THEY GONNA DO TO ME? AVADA CA-*BOOM HEADSHOT*

I'll kill those little scamps for their racism towards normal people (muggles), I think an F15 air strike to JK Rowlings house will do for a start, followed by a oribital bombardment of the actors houses and loved ones. Fuck everything to do with this global franchise, damn I hate popular things!
wow-you made me lol in class so loud i got kicked out of my lecture.kudos for that-i was so bored but didnt want to have to look awkward just getting up and walking
I'm more than happy to help, it's good to know I got a laugh from someone :D

I disliked how they are children's books that are marketed to adults and have never been a challenging read for me. The plots are all about the same and go as follows:

Harry's life sucks
Harry goes to Hogwarts
Harry finds out about some cool thing or person
Someone tries to kill Harry
Harry finds the cool thing and has a party with his pals

Also I think the psudo-latin incantation are a bit much. Kind of take the wind out of the sails of the whole magic thing.

I used to really enjoy it, especially when I was younger, and the books had not turned into enormous doorstoppers, because they have "Protection from editors" due to their popularity.

Also, I've read a lot of other really good fantasy subsequently, and harry potter does not stack up well against, say, A song of ice and fire.

And yes, I realize that I just nullified my first argument because ASOIAF isn't exactly a "Lite Read."

Ok just to get it out of the way yes i like Harry Potter and im a guy.i guess i like it for its good storytelling and all that jazz. but lots hate it why? i am talking about the books. yes i know, the movies are rubbish
The Harry Potter series has sold hundreds of millions of books worldwide and has garnered massive amounts of critical praise. It is widely considered a triumphant example of modern fantasy storytelling.

The movies have achieved similar status, with each entry into the film series consistently getting popular reviews. No Harry Potter film has a Rotten Tomato rating under 75 and every one has been a major box office hit.

So I seriously have no idea, what you're talking about. It seems to me Harry Potter is quite popular. Why you think there's some significantly large portion of the population beyond the odd standout opinion is beyond me.

Okay... if I had to rate them, here's how I'd do it

>Prisoner of Azkaban
>Sorcerer's (Philosopher's) Stone
>Half-Blood Prince
>Deathly Hallows (except for the epilogue)
>Chamber of Secrets
>Goblet of Fire
>Order of the Phoenix/DH epilogue

I feel like Order of the Phoenix had an air of complete pointlessness to it. Goblet of fire too, but to a lesser extent. Deathly Hallows was interesting enough, but the epilogue was way too neat and tidy. Half-Blood Prince was fun; I liked the tension between Snape and Harry. Sorcerer's Stone is what started it all, and therefor the most pure in terms of story. But I think that Azkaban is the best. It takes interesting jumps in the story without parting too much from what makes it great. I also liked the fact that it never actually mentions Voldemort personally. And it introduces one of my favorite characters in the series; Sirius Black.

I chose indifferent because I loved the first three books, but I found the 4th to be overly long and boring. I could never finish book 5th book, I got to page 100 and still nothing interesting had happened, so I put it down and never picked it back up. I was never interested to read the 6th and 7th books and I heard the complete stories from my friends anyway.

It's like, In the first 3 books, they stayed interesting and J.K.Rowling would get to the point quickly like:

"Harry walked through the door and into class with his magic book."

By the 5th book, it's like:

"Harry walked through the carefully crafted door with various symbols outlining it. He stopped to examine them, what could they mean? He thought about his lost parents and about all the hardships he had had before walking into class... "

and BLAH BLAH BLAH, it was so boring! There was so much unneeded description! Just get to the point J.K.Rowling! The book could have been much shorter and still had all the important stuff we needed to know. I just ran out of patience I guess.

Correct, she plagiarised off a an excellent author called Neil Gaiman, hence my pointing out that everyone should read it. Especially her fans.
Oh of course. Just like how Avatar plagiarised Dances with Wolves/Pocahontas and Eragon plagiarised Star Wars.
How are those lawsuits coming along by the way? Oh wait, there are no lawsuits, because as we all know, when someone's work is plagiarised resulting in multi-million dollar franchises, the original author doesn't care enough to take legal action.
Also, for the record, if Gaiman himself doesn't think she plagiarised his work, then you don't really have the right to make such claims. http://januarymagazine.com/profiles/gaiman.html

Slavery, heroine and female circumcision are also very popular with diverse groups at different times.
Congratulations. I debunk the most obvious argument you could have given, so instead you come up with one so utterly stupid that its somewhat insulting. As I said with Twilight, their are reasons why something bad (or mediocre), can be popular, its all about the audience/consumer. I'm not going to bother with in depth explanation as to why female circumcision and heroin are popular, simply put its religion/culture and temporary high/addiction respectively.

Harry Potter is rehash of a whole lot of Fantasy clichés. I see very little original content and an arrogant author who loves money.

Also Neil Gaiman said he doesn't want to risk the wrath of her corporate lawyers. Read The Books of Magic, it's not a matter of them being similar they're nearly identical.

Ok I'll use small words for you; They're reasons, they're not good reasons.

They're cliched, but I'll admit that they're well-written and the movies are well done (the few I chose to see). Just not my thing, but I've never actually met somebody that hated it. Really.

I got into the stories and I thought there were moments that were well written in the earlier books but the last 4 books and all the films have been utter loose stoole water.

Harry Potter was a big part of my childhood, and I have a lot of affection and respect for the series. I suspect that most of the resistance to the whole Harry Potter phenomenon comes from people wanting to stand out by going against the grain and hating on something popular. There are also some people who rail against it that just were never part of its target audience.

I don't see anything harmful in the phenomenon. They're decent children's and adolescent's books, and they had kids reading. The Harry Potter fan culture isn't any worse than any other ones I can identify.

I hate it because when i was in 6th grade we had to write a book report in school with out the help of our parents, we could choose any book we wanted, and sense they were so popular I decided he read the first Harry Potter book. It was a bit long but I figured I'd give it a shoot, spent tons of time reading it then finally finished it. Then I had to write the repot at school on paper, but since they thought parents would help us we weren't allowed to take it home, meaning to finish I would have to stay after school every day, now I didn't understand about how to find the most important parts of the book and make a report, and ended up making a 30 page report, having to stay after school every day for a month, now the library would only stay open an hour after school, but I couldn't get picked up for 2 hours after school. So I had to sit on the side walk every day for a mouth. When I finally finished my teacher said it was too long and i had to edit it. So i took another week editing it and typed it up, and what happens? I get a funking D because my spell check turned Querell to Quarrel. Harry Potter will RUE the day he ever crossed me! I'll get you next time potter, NEXT TIIIIIIIIIIIIIME!!!!!!

I like the books. Though as the series goes along, the lore starts to stumble over itself.

Liked them all but they aren't worth a re-read, Rangers Apprentice on the other hand...
