Give them all immature-slang names, so we can at least be amused when aliens conquer them from us.

"SIR! THEY HAVE CAPTURED URECTUM!"

I think that as we expand out into the stars, we should only give meaningful names to planest we either live on or are very very significant. I like the religious naming systems, because a lot of religious names (and I mean all religions, including ancient Grecco-Roman religions) have awsome names (the cool hovership in the matrix is the Nebuchadnezzar). If we want to try somthing else we could name planets after various natural locations around the world (like in Mass Effect there is the planet Shaanxi which is the name of a region of mountions in China)

Uranus. heh heh heh
Sadly, I recently found out the backstory behind the name... Ouranos, the father of Kronos, grandfather of Zeus.
It ruined the joke for me.
Well, didn't you hear? They renamed it to Urectum in 2620 to end that joke once and for all. :p

Edit: I forgot what I wanted to say: in classical Greek Ouranos means sky or heaven. (Which does not negate what you said. I was just throwing in some etymology.)
HAH! Good Professor reference!
You don't see much of that nowadays... other than Onyx's Hypnotoad picture.

And the etymology bit was an added bonus.
No, there should be many more Professor references. They are usually pure gold. In fact they should be shouted over the city by giant white mutant gorillas.

And Onyx's Hypno Toad avatar is aweseome.

Religious names for planets are cool. The only problem is that there are much more planets than pagan deities or heroes...

I think if WE are inhabiting them, we should stick to Latin/Greek, because the Latin for Earth is Terra. It would be silly to have "Earth" and then random other names (whether they be scientific, religious or otherwise)

I think each solar system should have a naming "theme". Ours is based on the Roman pantheon. We could have one named after corporations, one named after the Asgard, etc.

I think they should be named Dave. Except one. It should be called Gerald.
Plus, aliens that live on certain planets will likely have a name for their own planet.
I like this idea
I would like to live on Gerald
And ninja through out the confines of the white text areas

we can name them after me and my awesome qualities, seriously we should just give them cool, names without any childish yet funny innuendo. Stuff like "Angel" "Reach" "Halo" "Harvest" and "Reaper",
planet Darkness sounds awesome,

or latin stuff, I would love to live on the planet incendia or planet noctem or planet vita

ok go with funny immature names, to laugh at the news when they give reports on the battle with the aliens, "Breaking wind, I mean news, we have just received word that out military has captured Urectum."

"Sir, the nintendoes have re-started their abductions of normal people"

"Damn... I didn't count on that. Alright, bring out our flame spaceships, we'll just flame them all..."

Ummm.. I don't like any of the poll options...

I say we stick to the naming system we have, the finder of the planet has influence on the name but if he/she doesn't want tot name it the fucking retarded space people name it(You know the ones who haven't done anything for 70 years then tried to say Pluto is not a planet, when everyone knows it is)

Different classes of names for different systems would be preferential. The current system is good for various exoplanets, but if we ever find say planets with life or habitable planets, they could be given names from fiction or religion, which would be somewhat cool. I mean, there are various mythologies from which names can be picked, and there are also several options from the sci-fi universe. For example, one could call a desert planet Tatooine, and a red one that looks somewhat like Mars could be called Korriban.

They already have names based on stars - that's just a simple, easily understood system. For regular names, such as Earth and Mars, colloquial names popularized by the press will probably be adopted.
their names are from ancient roman religion, pre-Christian. Mars was the god of war. and Jupiter was the god of all gods. neptue was the god of the sea and uranus was actually greek, he was the father of Kronos who was the father of Zeus. Venus was the god of beauty.
I'm well aware of this, but if we start trying to name every exoplanet after a god without redundancies we're going to end up running out of names pretty quick.

We should keep naming em' in the way we named Uranus.
Would've been awesome.
