I... I don't know if you're being serious or not.

If you enjoy the awful taste and scent of burning tobacco, I wonder what else you enjoy. I, personally, detest smoking. You're free to do it, don't get me wrong, but I would strongly recommend quitting before you get too addicted. Yeah, sure, going out with your friends is fun, but does it have to be for a smoke?

Are you for real? People are starting?

In this day and age?

Mind boggling.
"In this day and age"? What do you mean?

OT: Are you... trolling? 'Cause if so, you're not very good. Sorry.
What I mean, is that there is so much information easily available that warns people just how bad for you smoking is, that only a idiot would start.

You can do what you want with your body, that's your right, but it's also my right to tell you how stupid it is.
A few thing wrong with this.

1.) Saying it's stupid for harming you is pretty close-minded. Why is it stupid? Life only has as much value as one gives it. Just because you've given it a high value doesn't mean everyone does.

2.) You only live once. This isn't a rehearsal.

3.) Sometimes people are pushed to things like smoking. Life can be very stressful, and people deal with it in different ways. Some people smoke, some drink, some work out.

4.) I don't see how it's your right to call us stupid. Why have you earned it? Please tell me you don't honestly believe that not smoking makes you better than anyone, because that's tragic.

5.) There is so much information that warns people against frequently using a computer, but you're on one. There's so much information warning against eating fast food, but I'm sure you've enjoyed a cheeky little Maccy D's. Hell, there's a lot of information that warns us that sitting down to take a shit is dangerous, but we all do it.
1) It's stupid for the same reason that cutting yourself is stupid. It is self harming with no benefits. Which makes it stupid.
2) You only live once so why should you throw that away by smoking.
3) No one is pushed into smoking it is a choice they make.
4) By not smoking, by making the choice to not do something that will kill me. And yes that does make me better then smokers.
5) There is also information that says cell phones give you cancer, but they don't. There is Information that says cell phone use at a gas pump can cause it to explode, but it can't. Smoking has been proved beyond a doubt to have negative effects. You also do not get addicted to Mickey D's

[HEADING=2]BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!![/HEADING]

My friend, nicotine is one of the most addictive substances out there. Please, don't delude yourself that you're above it's addictive potential.

Seriously, I find this pretty sad. Starting for the camaraderie? Is that just a bad excuse to say "peer pressure" or something? Because I cannot phantom a reason that there is anything you can't do in terms of bonding with friends that require you to smoke. What kinda shitty friends do you have if they shun you for not smoking, or what sort of a-social person are you that you need this to feel as 'one of the guys'. It's just...*sigh*

Nothing personal, really, but if you make a topic that states that you're almost proud to start one of the deadliest addictions on the planet...well, you're bound to get reactions like this. We all thank you for raising our insurance rates.

Of course, this could all be some kind of elaborate trolling trap. In that case; you got me. You got me good.

I started with Marbolo Reds when I was about 14~15. Since, I can say that my favourite ones were Lucky Strike and Chesterfield. I now smoke mostly kreteks which I love. Rather hard to get, though.
Those brands used to be my poison, I was the only one of my collective of friends who smoked red, nobody else liked them and said they were too strong. Stopped them from borrowing cigarettes from me though.
When I could get Lucky Strikes though, it was heaven.

Still I regret ever starting and I feel a tonne better in myself when I gave up.

No I don't but I did try it a two times. Both times I was really drunk and I had something big to celebrate, so thinking, why not, I smoked some cigarettes with my friends. I must say, I honestly don't know why people smoke them, I didn't feel anything good. Maybe it was because I was really drunk, but still. I just see the negative sides but no benefits. Nearly everyone I know smokes, friends families etc. and I've tried asking them why they do it but I could never get a satisfactory answer.

Tell me how that goes.

The thing is, you pretty much start smoking for social reasons. You stay for the addiction.

Around when I was 18, I went out and bought a pack of cigarettes. Smoked about half of them, and then thought to myself "why am I doing this?".

Couldn't find a good reason. Took out the cigs and rolled out all of the tobacco. Used them for pre rolled joints. Much more rewarding hobby in my opinion.

So I just started smoking last week and I'm loving it so far. I do it for the camaraderie. I enjoy going outside with friends to have a smoke.
You know, the outside world club will let you in without a fag in your hand.

I wouldn't dream of telling you to stop, mostly because it is impossible to truly stop.

Smoking is like alcoholism as soon as you start down that path you are a smoker for the rest of your life. This is because it is as much a psychological addiction as it is physical.
I know many people who have 'quit' for over a decade and then fall right back into it at a weak moment, or sometimes with no external factors pushing them towards it.

Bottom line, I don't care if anyone smokes, drinks or shoots stuff into their arms. It's their choice and as long as they don't bother me while doing it, and don't try to steal any of my stuff to feed their addiction, I'm happy.

I clicked yes and hate it. I started just like you smoking socially then it developed from there, and don't worry I'm not a big enough hypocrite to tell you to stop or moan on about what it does to your health.
Out of interest I smoke roll ups, they are much cheaper and the smoke tends to be less harsh (seriously pull apart a straight some time and marvel at the cheap ground up tobaco and bits of wood and wonder why they smoke so fast) the down side is you tend to look like a bit of a scruff rolling when your out.

But anyway I'm in the process of quiting now, cut down to around 5 a day and that number is swiftly going to fall to 0 in the next few weeks. I've eventually found out that the negatives far outway the positives at the moment and I guess I'm sick of smelling like smoke. But your right smoking can totally be great in short bursts especially if its social and with friends, so thats what I want to get to; totally quit except I'll smoke the odd cigarette with mates on a night out.

*shrug* Well my grandmother stopped well over three decades ago, and my grandfather two decades. Does that count as truly stopping?

Haha

No really, as a smoker for 20+ years I'll readily say it was one of the dumbest decisions of my life.

OT: I smoke Silk Cut. Yep, love them. Still wish I could quit.

No, no problem. It's just... I don't quite see what the appeal of smoking is from a sensory standpoint. I mean, I understand that some people might like it because of the relaxation you may get, but I thing the things taste and smell horrid. I mean "worst thing I've ever tasted/smelled" horrid.

I understand that some people like it. I just don't get why.

you hear that, OP?
according to this guy, smoking is a worse decision than all of the following:
- doing heroin
- cooking meth in your basement
- drunken one-night stands
- buying the collector's edition of bullet witch
- marrying a sailor
- bugchasing
- listening to katy perry
- voting for rick perry
- cheating on your girlfriend with her 13-year-old sister
- eating at godfather's pizza

let that be a lesson to you :v
Do you really think that the OP is going to make any of those choices?

Going with the most likely circumstances and just assuming this guy is an average guy, he will never do any of this.

So by that logic, yes, this is the worst decision he will ever make.

Congrats?

I dont smoke, i dont have the lungs and life style to afford it. My grandfather smokes through. He has one cigarette a day ever since he was 16, and has one bottle of beer a day ever since he was 19. Hes 90 now, but still healthy like an ox and has the body a 70 year old would envy.

You have every right to live your own life and have your own opinions. However, in my opinion you're an idiot and you're just harming yourself and people around you. It's your life though.

I smoked lightly for about 6 months or so, then just...got bored I guess and quit.

It's strange because I have a hugely addictive personality, and almost anything can latch onto my psyche and get me hooked.

I guess in the end it's your own decision, just make sure you only do it because you genuinely enjoy it, and not to 'fit in' or anything daft like that.

At least in Britiain it's about £8 for 20, or $25 for 40 smokes in US terms. Are smokes still dirt cheap in the US? Maybe it's because we pay for our healthcare thru taxes that smoking and drinking are so heavily taxed, tho I think that's a good thing.

I'm not trying to divert the thread, I'm just thinking, if you're on 20 a day, that's £56 a week, that's 4 new games a month you're smoking. There again, that's a good Friday night in a bar for some, just saying, it sure gets pricey in the UK.

Smoking...ugh...such an obvious sign of a weak will, and low self esteem.

No one needs to smoke, it's a given fact. It's not a health requirement, even if you have high blood pressure (There's a pill for that that isn't addictive, nor bad for you), or if you have a bad day, or anything. There is no real excuse I can think of that is believable. People smoke, from what I gather, because they either A) Think it's "cool", B) Because others do it, or C) Because they're curious.

Living for sixteen years of my life with a chain-smoker kills any sort of curiosity towards that. It isn't cool when your lungs turn out looking like a pile of rotted meat, and I have no qualms with being the only one in a group who doesn't smoke. Hell, I'd be proud to be that person...well, provided I'm forced into spending time in the same square mile as them.

I just...ugh. I don't understand why someone would want to. Comradarie? Bullshit. Just go up to them and fucking talk. You shouldn't need to ruin your health with a stick full of who-knows-what being inhaled into your lungs to get that sort of companionship with others. If you do, then you're one sorry socialize-er.

Small consolation prize for you, though: You don't care what anyone thinks, and will keep on doing it despite what others say because it is something you enjoy. Great concept, bad usage. That's like saying that you'll just keep driving shards of glass into your nose because it's something you enjoy. It's great that you enjoy it, now if only it wasn't something that's killing you faster than the daily rigors of life, plus annoying the hell out of everyone around you who is smart enough not to smoke. :\

End of line.

"Please don't tell me to stop, because I am not addicted to it and could if I want to"

come back and tell me that in... probably less than a decade. Of course you're not addicted, you just started. That's not the issue. The issue is that YOU WILL get addicted unless you stop.

Ultimately if you're so intent on destroying your own body for the sake of pleasure. I can think of several other drugs that do it better.
