So I just started smoking last week and I'm loving it so far. I do it for the camaraderie. I enjoy going outside with friends to have a smoke. I tried Camels but like Marbs better. I just wanted to see what people think of smoking, and to see what everyone else smokes?

Please don't tell me to stop, because I am not addicted to it and could if I want to. I enjoy smoking.
If you want your lungs to NOT be filled so much with air, then don't smoke.

Let me strangle you instead.

Idiot...

Heavy smoker here.

I love to smoke, I enjoy it and as a bonus it give me an excuse to head outside at awkward parties.
I also hate it because frankly my lung capacity has gone to shit and it can take me 30 minutes to recover from a 20 second sprint. Oh and it is a fucking expensive habit, at least around here.

My advice is to stop and get out while you can because while this:

may be true now since you just started it will not remain true forever.

You know what I do with my friends for camraderie? Breathe. :)

Honestly though, there's many more things you can do with friends that don't include cyanide, tar, and ingredients used for rat poison.

Yes, it's widely known that it's impossible to stand outside with some mates without smoking.

I think it's your decision, but it's a stupid one.

Then your addicted. It's impossible to enjoy smoking, inhaling smoke is one of the most tortuous experiences I've ever had the misfortune of having, the only way of enjoying it is either the addiction satisfaction or the childish psychological feeling of "being a big boy".

I've been smoking for about 8 or 9 years now. Obviously I enjoy it, but simply because I enjoy the flavour which seems to go especially well with beer (which is why I tend to smoke a whole lot more when I'm drinking).
If you enjoy smoking too, then good for you, though I will say that smoking just for camaraderie seems a bit silly.

No? Might have been the other guy then. My apologies, I must've gotten you mixed up. I know someone definitely did.

Look.

I would never go up to a stanger and tell them that smoking is bad for them, that's fucking ridiculous.

But if I know someone? I tell them just how stupid I think they are.

My parents smoke and my sister smokes, it's an expensive and filthy habit, and they're very fucking hypocritical about it.

"Oh, spending more money on videogames are we? What a waste"

They then proceed to spend hundreds of pounds a year on cigarettes.

Famous last words :D

But seriously, if you smoke just for the camraderie, maybe you should consider trying something else. No hate, just saying.
Damn ninja'd.
...
Ah hell, I'll say it anyway; you're not addicted yet my friend.

I'm not going to call you stupid, but I am going to make an analogy.

Smoking for the camaraderie is like radioactive waste-diving for the rush. There are dozens of better ways to do it, and most of them don't kill you.

While I agree with you post generally this is just plain wrong. I smoke and I enjoy smoking. I can also admit my addiction, however my enjoyment of having a smoke at times is not reliant on satisfying my addiction.

And I can also admit that at times I smoke purely because I need one now man, but your point that it is impossible to enjoy a smoke is wrong!

when i first started smoking many years ago, i wasn't addicted to it just as you think you aren't. my advice to you is to quit now before you do get addicted. i'm not going to tell you smoking for the camaraderie is stupid because that's why i started. but trust me when i say you'll start hating yourself for smoking in the years to come.

so yeah, i'm telling you to stop, before it's too late and you can't stop...

I would tell you to stop not for health reasons, but for monetary concerns. Cigs are pricey, man. You are literally smoking money.

Also, you know... it's really boring. Inhale smoke, exhale smoke. Woohoo.

In this day and age?

Mind boggling.
Both of you. Exactly, I really forgot that people still start smoking. The only reason to smoke is if you are a detective or sea captain (detective chain smokes cigs, sea captain get a pipe). Otherwise nope, nope no reason to smoke exept to be popular.

My mother was diagnosed with athsma due to her parents smoking (they promptly quit, it was a long time ago people did not know of second hand smoke, but my grand father lost all his organs slowly to the long term effects of smoking (The Kidney and liver damage got him after he survived the cancers)).

"In this day and age"? What do you mean?

OT: Are you... trolling? 'Cause if so, you're not very good. Sorry.
What I mean, is that there is so much information easily available that warns people just how bad for you smoking is, that only a idiot would start.

You can do what you want with your body, that's your right, but it's also my right to tell you how stupid it is.
A few thing wrong with this.

1.) Saying it's stupid for harming you is pretty close-minded. Why is it stupid? Life only has as much value as one gives it. Just because you've given it a high value doesn't mean everyone does.

2.) You only live once. This isn't a rehearsal.

3.) Sometimes people are pushed to things like smoking. Life can be very stressful, and people deal with it in different ways. Some people smoke, some drink, some work out.

4.) I don't see how it's your right to call us stupid. Why have you earned it? Please tell me you don't honestly believe that not smoking makes you better than anyone, because that's tragic.

5.) There is so much information that warns people against frequently using a computer, but you're on one. There's so much information warning against eating fast food, but I'm sure you've enjoyed a cheeky little Maccy D's. Hell, there's a lot of information that warns us that sitting down to take a shit is dangerous, but we all do it.
1) It's stupid for the same reason that cutting yourself is stupid. It is self harming with no benefits. Which makes it stupid.
2) You only live once so why should you throw that away by smoking.
3) No one is pushed into smoking it is a choice they make.
4) By not smoking, by making the choice to not do something that will kill me. And yes that does make me better then smokers.
5) There is also information that says cell phones give you cancer, but they don't. There is Information that says cell phone use at a gas pump can cause it to explode, but it can't. Smoking has been proved beyond a doubt to have negative effects. You also do not get addicted to Mickey D's
1.) The moment you said this I knew that you don't really know what you're talking about. Calling cutting stupid is just ignorant. And secondly, it does have benefits: It calms us down.

2.) It's not throwing it away.

3.) There's no such thing as a fully free choice. Nobody simply starts smoking one day. Events in their life must've put them there.

4.) If you think that you're better for not smoking, I really feel bad for you. That's just so very sad and big headed.

5.) You can get addicted to McDonalds. Believe me, I'm friends with someone who's just beaten an addiction (I'm not even kidding). And you missed my point entirely. It wasn't on the validity of the statements, I was just pointing out that everyday we do things that are proven to have negative effects, but we don't say a thing. Yet smoking makes us pariahs because your mummy and daddy told you smoking is evil.

1: It's stupid for the same reason I'd say beating yourself over the head with a rock is stupid.

2: You're right, so why risk it with a really unhealthy (and fucking expensive) habit.

3: My parents regularly have a smoke to relieve stress. Wrong. They're not relieving stress, they're relieving withdrawel symptoms.

4: It's my right because I'm allowed an opinion. You wanna smoke? Go knock yourself out, you're free to do so. I'm also free to tell you how fucking stupid it is.

5: You're right, but none of those things are 100%, bad for you in every way imaginable.
1.) You didn't answer the question. Why is beating yourself over the head with a rock bad? The answer is because you've given life a high value, and you have to deal with the fact that not everyone shares this view.

2.) It's hardly risking your life. Hardly an extreme sport, unless you actually buy all the negative bullshit the media gives you.

3.) Wrong. Smoking relieves stress. I've been addicted, but I've also smoked when not addicted. I finished a pack of tobacco, which calmed me down, and I felt no withdrawal symptoms after stopping.

4.) Having an opinion is your right. However, thinking you have to right to spew it onto others is just kinda immature. If you hate it, just keep quiet and move on. If I didn't like your shirt I wouldn't call you a prick for wearing it.

5.) Smoking isn't 100% bad. It doesn't destroy 100% of your body. If done in (extreme) moderation, which is possible, it's on a par with drinking.

Overall, I'm not saying smoking is good; it's a bad habit (not as bad as the media says, mind). it just irks me to see that people are so big headed that they think they're better because they don't smoke. I kind of hoped that by now society would have grown up enough to just accept that some people will do things that others didn't liked. It depresses me to see supposed adults whining because somebody has made a choice.
1. Agreed, too subjective to judge. Cutting is also the result of long term stress and psychological issues.

2. It makes your last years worse, in my pinion it shows short sightedness in a persons character. Sure it's not a super deadly thing but I would NEVER add more chance to suffer, being old sucks enough, making those last years painful and shit is never a good idea. Smokers can live long health lives, the real difference is those later years.

3. Some people are pushed to smoking socially as well so I agree. However a lot of people do it by choice, often for a social boost. Those people are the ones I lay blame on. I am a huge advocate of free rights, heroin should be legal as far as I am concerned but those who abuse it out of free will would still be lacking in character to me (responsible experimentation aside, still heroin is an extreme example).

4. Be semantic is silly, obviously he has the right to free speech but so do all the idiots, we still recognize them as idiots. Sometimes spewing your ideas is wrong not because you dont have the right to do it but because it is just an indecent thing to do.

5. Smoking is bad, obviously it is not %100 bad, I am sure that many people are killed faster by obesity then they are smoking. But at the end of the day smoking is bad and slowly kills your organs, if you intend to/are going to die early then you can go ahead. Smoking wont necessarily kill you fast (unless you get lung cancer) but it will make sure your death will be slow and painful, I have seen it. As you get older your body slows down and ceases to function and then the cumulative damage to your liver kidney and heart start to kick in. Liver failures (bad and slow way to die, years of dialysis and external bladders) are more likely. Heart disease could just strike you dead at age 50 or linger through into the 70's 80's. You have to be one lucky healthy bastard to make it into your nineties of you smoked for years.

Yeah ok, if you worry for someone's health I get that. When you talked about voicing your opinion I assumed you meant just telling every smoker you see that they're retarded. And I can't argue with the cost. That's insane.
Nah man, I find the zealous anti-smokers just as fucking annoying as anyone else. At least smokers typically keep it to themselves.

...you do realize this is the exact same thing every smoker says? Right up to the point they try, then all you hear is how tough it is to stop smoking.

Seriously, there are millions of dollars spent each year to help people stop smoking, and people still voluntarily start.

I don't understand it. If you want the camaraderie, why can't you just go outside with your friends and, you know, not smoke?

Also, you are aware of the health hazards associated with smoking right?
