They're more ska than punk.
That's the problem though. 'Punk' is more of a meaning stuffed into the lyrics of a song. Ska can be punk, which would make it skapunk. Pretty much every genre can technically be called punk, I guess. It all depends on your definition.

Also, I realize most of the "mainstream" """punk""" bands are far from actual punk, but whoever started off with Fall Out Boy? I don't think I've ever heard anybody call Fall Out Boy punk before.

That's what I was saying, Punk is about the meaning, not the music, Reel Big Fish are ska because of their lyrics AND musical style.

I got this 70's punk collection recently (I think it was called No Thanks!), and it really made me realize how much better punk was back in the day.

The Buzzcocks, Generation X, Wire.....all great stuff.

Me and a couple of my friends do. When I say punk I mean Ramones, Misfits, Sex Pistols, Exploited, Bad Religion, Dead Kennedys. That what you mean?

Others think Punk Rock is a song by Bowling for Soup...
refering to punk rock 101, it IS a song :p

It's alive, just a bit ill...its time will come again though...
Its got a terminal illness i guess...
Nice avater of a nihilistic junkie you've got there.

Anyway: In my oppinion there hasn't really been any good punk since the American Hardcore scene died in the mid 80's, or atleast I havn't heard it yet.

Fucked Up are an insanely good band though, even if NME has a pathetic hard-on for them. It's like they have all the rage and raw-power of original Hardcore, with a kind of mature and intelligent approach to songwriting and musical style that's very refreshing.

Sick Of It All, The Unseen, Rise Against pre-Appeal to Reason, Bad Religion, Reinventing Axl Rose-era Against Me!, The Killing Tree, NOFX, Operation Ivy, Propagandhi, and of course the mighty Refused are all great punk bands that don't fall under the category of "classic punk", such as the Sex Pistols or Dead Kennedys.

Not to mention all the ska-punk... Streetlight Manifesto, Big D and the Kid's Table, Less Than Jake (their album Hello Rockview at least).

I saw Propagandhi the other night, unfortunatley there was a fire about 20 minutes into the set, they had only played their new stuff as well...

Haha, there was a fire on stage? Vintage Propagandhi. So you didn't get to hear Ska Sucks?

Sadface indeed.

Almost any punk rock you hand to me I will like. Yes, that does happen to include greenday and even Bowling for Soup. The only problem I have with the genre is emo-punk and The Sex Pistols. I hate The Sex Pistols and I will never understand how something so awesome came from people who obviously had no musical talent. (No I will not argue this point with you. Musical preferences are personal and, therefore, cannot be solved rationally.)

I'm bookmarking this so I can search and find all these bands that i've missed.

Thanks guys.
You might want to check out interpunk.com I used to go on that site a lot to hear of new bands.

On topic, how can punk be dead when bands like Bad religion are still touring. IMO the greatest punk band and one of the few with a message worth listening to.

Also, I saw Rise Against in London about month ago and they played a v.big venue with the majority of people being teeny boppers. (although I don't think they are true punk)

I am way into Punk Rock, but no one seems to be listening to actual punk anymore. When I mention Punk, people drop names like Green Day, but when i say Richard Hell, the Heart Breakers, the Dead Kennedys, the Dictators, the New York Dolls, Iggy and the Stooges and the like i get blank stares. Anyone still listen to the REAL punk?
That's awfully narrow and arrogant of you.

Love all the old British punk, like The Clash, Sex Pistols, Buzzcocks etc. And the Dead Kennedys. Newer wave punk bands such as earlier Rise Against and Propagandi are pretty cool as well.

It's just the 'punk' bands today... everything I needed to say about Green Day has been said; that's not punk. Still kinda like them, but I don't consider them to be punk in the true sense.

The Pistols started off the DIY ethic that the punk movement had (at the beginning). The fact that they could barely play intruments and had terrible production value is what meant they were punk. Good lyrics (in my opinion), just a shame there was nothing else there at all...
