Its things like this that have turned Robert Heinlein's "If this goes on-" into one of the scariest short stories I have ever read. The man is fucking insane and quite frankly should be held up as an example of whats wrong with democracy

Currently, A Georgia lawmaker is trying to pass a law that will render having a miscarriage a criminal act. What is the punishment for this "crime", you might ask?

Death.

Thoughts, Escapist?

Since I can see from reading through these posts that it has been extensively explained to you what this bill is doing, and how your presentation demonstrates a marked framing bias, I think it would be sporting of you to adjust the original post to reflect this information you've been given.

OT: If a woman induces a miscarriage through gross negligence, it should be the right of a State to declare that act a murder (ie, negligent homicide) if that state already has policies on the books by which the unborn are treated as people for purposes of criminal law.

This, of course, raises the question of whether or not a child born with, say, fetal-alcohol syndrome should be treated as a case of attempted murder... but then you run the risk of such children having their mothers stripped away.

In short, I want to agree that there should be a stiff penalty for these women who, whether by negligence or malice, cause the deaths of their unborn children... but I also believe that sort of person has no business being a parent at all. The child dies, which is tragic, but the bloodline of that particular idiot dies with it. Nature enforces itself, no need for legislation.

Just another outspoken politician trying to push through some random bill that will likely never even be voted on anyway. This sort of thing happens all the time. Nothing to see here.

Although the wording of this legislation is just horrible. particularly this part...

... so long as there is no human involvement whatsoever in the causation of such event.
Technically, under this wording, there could be some insane restrictions placed on pregnant women. In addition to the no smoking/drinking/drugs thing, anything else that could be seen as harmful to the baby could also be prohibited. Things like coffee, herbal tea, potato chips, excessive exercising, going to places where you could likely be exposed to bacteria and diseases, getting in a car (which could be in a crash), etc...

In extreme cases, you would basically be stripping away all rights of the woman involved under threat of being charged with murder of her child should something happen.
I personally believe the agenda behind this type of law is to take away rights from women, as are attacks on family planning clinics and trying to limit birth control options (The pill isn't covered by some insurance plans).

Why are our legislators more worried about potential children rather than the children who are here now? Education funding is being cut, health care funding is being cut, and foster care funding is being cut. If we really want to improve children's lives shouldn't we be starting with funding programs that help real, live children?

"This woman's biology killed her child while it was in the womb! Clearly she is a murderer and should be put to death!"

Oh god, my brain! IT HURTS FROM TRYING TO PROCESS HOW STUPID THIS LEGISLATOR IS!!

This kind of thing makes me want to throw up. Granted, I know it will NEVER pass. It's just far too extreme of a bill, and he's tried similar things in the past which never went anywhere at all. However, the fact that someone could even have their head so far up their own ass to think that a bill like this could even be warranted sickens me.

No matter how nuts you think a politician is. Remember there is always one who is even more extreme. Probably there is someone out there would like a law to be passed making it illegal for a woman to not be pregnant.

Some on the extreme of the extreme right see women as vessels for which future soldiers are born, and nothing more.

The best thing to do is ignore these people, seen as they have no power. Sure this guy has a vote in the Georgia state legislature, but still even with that level of power one person cannot make a difference, no matter how big a screwball he is.

Okay, this is ridiculous. Of course, this is MSNBC we're talking about here, so you can't really trust anything they say.

To me, it looks like one crazy person proposing something incomprehensibly stupid, and these commentators using it to demonize the entire pro-life movement. They didn't just say "this guy is an idiot", they started Republican-bashing, acting like this is normal conservative behavior, and it's a "war on reproductive rights".
Seriously. I read an MSNBC article about counties that have declining population. Two paragraphs in it started blaming republican economic policies on the declining birth rate and aging citizens.

Seriously. I thought democrats were suppose to be better than this. This is Fox News level of bull crap.

Sounds like the Bill won't be able to pass if it over turns Roe V Wade a supreme court decision.
States have overideing rights to federal decisions in alot of cases.
Unless a law is just flat out declared unconstitutional(even then states still have a go at it sometimes ie Prop 8 in CA)

Of course it is. MSNBC is the liberal Fox. You just never really hear about what jackasses they are because the have nowhere near the level of influence and viewers that Fox has.

They were the news outlet that demonized McCain and heralded Obama as the fricking Messiah at the same time as Fox was saying that Obama wasn't an American citizen.

Isn't it illegal to miscarriage in Utah as well? And by that I mean miscarriage because of drug abuse or physical abuse - apparently staying with an abusive partner is a criminal act in this case. Or neglecting to wear a seatbelt and miscarrying. Or falling down the stairs... Well, that was the original proposal anyway. It got changed into something a little more sane if I remember correctly.

All because a pregnant girl asked her boyfriend to beat her up. In a state where abortions are legal. Sigh...

OT: IMO, miscarrying is not a crime. Doing drugs - whether narcotics or alcohol - while pregnant is bloody stupid mind you, but being stupid isn't a crime either.

Punishing mothers for a tragedy beyond their means to control is despicable.

Wait, the guy who proposed this wants to "take America back to its Christian roots"? Excuse me if I'm wrong, but isn't freedom of religion a basic part of the Constitution? I guess it's true then, they'll let anyone into a political party and propose bills nowadays.

Fine then, I, a non-American citizen, join an unnamed party, and propose that all people should jump around for 20 minutes everyday for no adequately explained reason just because I wrote it down on an online forum. Failure to follow this directive will result in real life teabagging by Teabaggers.

^That makes about as much sense and has the same chances of passing as the bill in this thread.

Evidently this guy has no idea that the majority of fetuses miscarry naturally before most women can even detect that they're pregnant.

What a dumbass, in other words.

Wow. People sit there astounded someone could be so stupid as to propose what the OP assumes the law proposes, but can't stop for a minute to actually think this might just be a sensationalist interpretation intended to bring interest to an otherwise uninteresting piece?

What? No. Miscarriages are accidents, even if the mother was using illegal substances. And in that case, aren't there already sufficient laws to punish them for the illegal drug use? And if not, the death penalty?! Really? Pushing it a bit too far there.
