Poll: Oblivion Class Question

It doesn't matter what class I opt, I always end up playing a tank mage by the end.

Normally I just pick a mix of primary and secondary skills that let me control how fast I level while still getting 5x modifiers at each level up, so I don't end up gimped at mid/high levels thanks to that godforsaken scaling mechanism.

I like having both magic and weapons so I'm not limited to one thing. First time I played through I was a straight up warrior with some destruction magic but in later plays I preferred a stealth marksman with proficiency in several areas of magic.

I generally play a different class everytime, but I started with playing a full mage.

I make custom classes. Either an assassin archer (since theres no duel wielding daggers) or a holy/destruction warrior. (AKA a paladin).

Once Skyrim rolls out I'm gona be rolling up a proper rogue. Duel wielding what a concept.

Most RPGs, I go mage all the way, but that just doesn't seem to work right for me in a first-person view. So for games like Oblivion, and I'm sure it'll be the same in Skyrim, I do the thief/assassin thing. I pour pretty much everything into sneak, lockpick and archery, and just have a little healing magic for the few times something manages to get a hit on me before I fill it with arrows.

I rarely make a "pure" class of anything in Oblivion. My Stealth characters always have armorer and blade, my Mages usually have an armor skill and a weapon skill, and my Warriors usually have restoration or marksman.

I dislike keeping track of spells and being squishy, so I always play a custom thiefy class with light armour, acrobatics, athletics, lockpicking and of course stealth and marksman, and then invest in alchemy, repairing items and restoration as non-class skills. Taking the stealthy approach, particularly in the Oblivion plane, is very fun, particularly with the mod "Attack and Hide" that vastly improves enemy AI by removing their ability to telepathically locate you after you've given yourself away, no matter how far you run. Nothing like trying to sneak through a place where even the plants are trying to kill you for an immersively nerve-wracking experience.

Custom hero with a blade, illusion magic and NO armor. Because You can look cool and do som pretty serious shit with illusion magic.
And the second one is a guy in heavy armor with big shield. Primary skills, block, restoration, heavy armor. I call him Living Wall.

All this I have read. Understanding the point of resting and making level 2, I do not.

I got my first character to level 5, went into the first oblivion gate generally following the story and got a serious butt-rape. I left the game difficulty on it's default 50%, and at level 5 I could barely kill anything let alone the 2-3 mobs at a time that occasionally come at you. I was also getting killed in 3-4 hits from any given mob.

I found the experience to be so off putting I haven't played since. Very disappointing as I really wanted to like this game.

Edit: I was a sneaky thief/mage-thing.

Strange, I never seem to take Marksmanship, though I know I should.

This last time through, I am running a:

Agility
Speed

Thief starsign

Acrobatics
Athletics
Alteration
Blade
Light Armor
Sneak
Security

And I can damn near jump over a house from a standing position. Anyway, the upside is nightvision racial bonus. Plus, you get a water breathing necklace from one of the DB quests, so I don't have to play an Argonian (ugh, just me).

And then Vampirism. Life Detect, 100 feet, 30 sec. Makes dungeon crawling a breeze. Of course, at some point, I'll have to do the quest to get rid of it.

Sidenote: I wonder if Lycanthropy is coming back in Skyrim? It was an option in Daggerfall, not sure about Morrowind, and not in Oblivion.

Chose full melee before I saw the "Custom" option...
Oh well, I usually go for the blade and shield wielding knight in heavy armor. Always prefered surivablity and melee when I play RPGs.

I always do a custom class and tend to lean towards a character who regards magic as useless, prefers one-handed blade weapons and who specialises in light armour, sneak and security. I also tend to choose Redgaurd, as they are quite well suited to this setup.

PS, Who else wants to freeze themselves until Skyrim is released, because I'm starting to get quite jittery without it.

This is probably the millionth time that this has been done, but I really don't care.

I have played Oblivion numerous times, as have many of you. And each time, I try to change it up a bit. Different race, different class. But for some reason, I can never, no matter how hard I try, get into the game being a full mage, with no melee skills to back me up. I always seem to revert back to the Thief/Assassin badass, and either an elf, or a Khajit.

At least that way, I get quests for Fighter's Guild, Mage's Guild, Dark Brotherhood, Thieves Guild, and so far only one for the Order of the Virtuous Blood, although ironically, I'm a vampire too.

So fellow Escapists, what say you? What class do you always seem to fall back on whilst playing our beloved game of ES4: Oblivion?


(Unrelated and off-topic: And does anyone really ever use the Alchemy stuff? Morter and Pestle, Albemic, Calcinator....and for what? So I can pick flowers?)

I actually use alchemy all the time to create potions. I tend to play on harder difficulties (depending on how weak my class set up is) and a good chunk of change gets spent on potions. Instead I pick herbs, buy herbs, and then create potions for use or sale. If your barter skill is decent you can even make a fair profit off of them.

Having spent an age painstakingly pick-pocketing, thieving and burglarizing my way through the entire city I turned around to see a friend -who'd started at the same time as me, picked a warrior and gone dungeon crawling- had about 10x as much money as me + an unbreakable lock-pick...

I generally play a sneak character with medium armor, and long blade/blunt weapons skills. Give me a chance to be a real necromancer, and I would be mage all the way

yeah I like to be able to do all things. Also im like the only person I know of that actually likes that the game gives you the opportunity to do everything.
That being said I do always tend to fall back on being a general sneaky bastard.

I'm mostly a melee fighter, but I tend to use a bow until they close the gap and I then I unleash holy hell upon them (most don't get that close anymore though). And I love sneaking around (I think I made Sneak a major skill and am now a master of it) and one-hitting people who don't see me coming. Makes the game stupidly easy, especially when exploring caves

About the only magic that I use anymore is a healing spell if I REALLY need it or the random cold/lightning touch spell if I want to end a fight quickly. Mostly I can just walk about and let people kill themselves by hitting me, since I have resistance to normal weapons and a crap ton of damage reflect.
