And that's really what it comes down to in terms of preference, rappers VS lyricists. The old schoolers are better rappers with a better flow and story to tell. The new school have better metaphors and wordplay. Tupac, for all the love I have for him, is NOT a lyricist. At all. Listen to his tracks and tell me otherwise.
I think the new school is starting to surpass the old school. Jurrassic 5, Wu-Tang, Masta Ace, De La Soul and others will always have a place in my heart, but I love lyricism with a serious intensity.

OT: I love pretty much anything pre Lil Wayne. For me that's when the majority of Rappers started going downhill, the stretch from around 2004 to the end of the decade was pretty bad for me. Hopefully this new decade can bring some better stuff to the table (and it's started off pretty good, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy ftw!)
From what I have heard old school is better, though the only rappers I really listen to are Eminem and Tupac, so my opinion doesn't matter that much.
If Atmosphere is new school, count me in. If Lil' Wayne is also new school, that makes me apprehensive. I suppose my opinion comes down to more "Gangsta/ White Boy" or "We made this because we have a message to get out about something that has happened to or relates to us." In that case, I prefer the latter.
EDIT: If you're a hip-hop/ rap fan that doesn't own The Lucy Ford EP and The Family Sign, you have brought shame to your family.
