I say quit arguing and put some Zeppelin on already.
Shut up, the Stig doesn't talk, and besides he only listens to morse code and vuvuzelas and shit, not rap music.

Mostly old school rap is what I'm able to tolerate. The only new stuff I like are parodies or Epic Rap Battles of History.

Old school rap of course. Run DMC were the boss. One of my friends and I have a habit of singing Tricky when we get really drunk.

This speech is my recital, I think it's very vital...

Me and my friend, the same friend who I argued with about whether Biggie Smalls was better then Tupac if you visited that thread, finally settled that argument and we both came to the conclusion that The Notorious B.I.G. was indeed the better rapper, but then he made the statement "Any of today's rapper could sweep him under the rug," so now we're arguing about wether Old School or New Scool rap is better, help put this to rest, and feel free to put some videos on here if you feel it helps.

For this thread we'll assume that Old School rap is anything before 2004, I don't know if thats neccesarily true but I also don't really care.

EDIT: I grew up in the 90's so anything before 2004 is old school to me, that may not be so true for the older rap fans on the thread. Just thought I'd clear that up since a few people have disagreed with my rap dating system.
I know that debate is done, but Tupac is the better rapper, but Biggie is the better lyricist.

And that's really what it comes down to in terms of preference, rappers VS lyricists. The old schoolers are better rappers with a better flow and story to tell. The new school have better metaphors and wordplay. Tupac, for all the love I have for him, is NOT a lyricist. At all. Listen to his tracks and tell me otherwise.

I think the new school is starting to surpass the old school. Jurrassic 5, Wu-Tang, Masta Ace, De La Soul and others will always have a place in my heart, but I love lyricism with a serious intensity.

Three examples of excellent lyricists: Royce Da 5'9'

Crooked I

, and

Pharaohe Monch

.

New School for me.

To rock (a rhyme)
that's right (on time)
It's Tricky is the title, here we go!!!

OT: I love pretty much anything pre Lil Wayne. For me that's when the majority of Rappers started going downhill, the stretch from around 2004 to the end of the decade was pretty bad for me. Hopefully this new decade can bring some better stuff to the table (and it's started off pretty good, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy ftw!)

This is one of my favorite songs ever. Off-topic? Perhaps, but thanks for posting it, I haven't heard this song in years.
This song made got me into Hip Hop, Illmatic is an amazing album. Been listening to it extensively. ^.^
I haven't hear this song since I left Germany, and that was more than 2 years ago.

From what I have heard old school is better, though the only rappers I really listen to are Eminem and Tupac, so my opinion doesn't matter that much.

If Atmosphere is new school, count me in. If Lil' Wayne is also new school, that makes me apprehensive. I suppose my opinion comes down to more "Gangsta/ White Boy" or "We made this because we have a message to get out about something that has happened to or relates to us." In that case, I prefer the latter.

EDIT: If you're a hip-hop/ rap fan that doesn't own The Lucy Ford EP and The Family Sign, you have brought shame to your family.

I'd embed some Family Sign videos, but there aren't many.

Even older.

I like biggie alot more than tupac and snoop and N.W.A. This isnt to say old school was 'all good' i mean look at people like Ice-T and teck9 (ugh), there are some decent artists these days who do modern 'Hip-hop'.

Genre breaking artists like Tyler the creator and The Game, who bring old school rap into the 21st century 'electronic' era. Of course there are mainstream rappers like Flo-rida and Nelly (who had some awsome early stuff ft. the St lunatics) who drive rap in an opposite direction but all in all mix it.

We all know who we should really be hating on, LADY FUCKING GAGA!
aw cmon tech n9ne is the shit, listen to midwest choppers 1 or 2 or worldwide choppers, i like him a lot. I will give you cred tho cuz tyler the creator is pretty boss. BASTARD was sick and his new album is amazing no matter what the haters say

Old school, at least they were shooting eachother back then.
Hell, no! Ever heard of a battle? B-boys don't let the guns do the talking. Although the OP did say old-school was here pre-2004; for me old-school is pre-1989.

This one says it all, I think:

There never has been nor will there ever be a better rap song than Rapper's Delight, so the crown rests firmly in the old school court.
