Where's the poll option for PETA are the last people we need as the face of the animal rights movement?
...oh dear God, how the hell has PETA become the face of the animal rights movement? It lends the entire ideal a taint of stupid.
As a group, they have given money to domestic terrorists. http://www.animalscam.com/references/peta_rodney1.cfm
They've supported groups who've repeatedly destroyed medical research facilities http://www.splcenter.org/get-informed/intelligence-report/browse-all-issues/2002/fall/from-push-to-shove/eco-violence-the-rec and shown individuals not only how to make firebombs but destroyed millions of dollars of other people's homes and decades of medical research http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rod_Coronado
PETA kills animals. Seriously. http://www.thedailybeast.com/newsweek/2008/04/27/peta-and-euthanasia.html Of course, they kill the vast majority of animals given to them while other groups give animals home. http://www.thisistrue.com/peta.html
As you might guess based on my handle, their inane stance toward medical research is the most annoying thing from my PoV. PETA actively opposes gifts to the American Cancer Society and March of Dimes because they claim these groups conduct NEEDLESS experiments. Wait, what? PETA is claiming they know what is useful cancer research better than the ACS?
You've got to be kidding me.
PETA recommends the donations of human cadavers (ok, that's fine) to replace animals in research. Erm. Yes. Because cadavers are somehow able to demonstrate how a process works in vivo. Oh, wait. They're dead and can't. Nothing out of context here, get it from their site. http://www.peta.org/b/thepetafiles/archive/2011/04/18/surprising-ways-to-help-animals-in-laboratories.aspx Let me set this straight. I agree when cell cultures are able to do the job, living animals should not be used. What do you do when cultures can't do the job? http://www.understandinganimalresearch.org.uk/resources/document_library/download_document/?document_id=8 lists advances that a PETA-based doctrine would shut down. Penicillin. The Salk vaccine against polio. Heart valve replacement and transplant. Blood transfusions. Anti-cancer medications. Asthma inhalers. Insulin for diabetics. Training for surgeons. HIV treatments. Diptheria antitoxin. Promising new research such as RNAi silencing. Blah. All this would be gone in PETA's world.
Again, PETA opposing research designed to understand human addiction to treat addicts. Exactly how do you study the biochemistry of addiction without using living things, I have no idea. http://www.peta.org/b/thepetafiles/archive/2010/09/24/tax-dollars-thrown-away-on-pointless-animal-experiments.aspx
Peta uses The Onion in order to try to make an argument. Seriously. http://www.peta.org/b/thepetafiles/archive/2010/08/03/Gag-No-Gag-Do-Scientists-Torture-for-the-Heck-of-It.aspx
They don't want you to have pets. Again, no out of context information: http://www.peta.org/about/why-peta/pets.aspx Their stances on pet birds, outdoor cats (...no pets, but no outdoor cats? Wait, what?) , catch and release fishing, etc are just as hard line. Forget the fur ads; no leather belts, baseball gloves, or seats.
And this kind of nonsense they do just discredits any actual animal rights group. Support the ASPCA, the Royal Society, something worthwhile. I actually support animal rights, making sure all experiments are conducted with the highest standards of ethical behavior, severe penal and civil penalties for animal cruelty, and even see the benefit of a diet with low meat or no meat. (I go for low.) However, PETA as an organization has somehow let wanks and cranks who know little about science take the spotlight over any movement towards responsible, reasonable actions towards animals. And making it a porn sight game just buries the actual topics and goals of any real animal rights campaign get buried under shock. PETA's filthy associations and silly positions are coming to light and entering the public consciousness, and the more these jokers keep making animal rights supporters look like a lunatic fringe, the less will actually be done.
TL;DR PETA's stunts belittle the animal rights movement and their policies would stifle medical science and responsible human action towards animals. They regularly support terrorists and make those who agree with some of their positions look like kooks. Support more reputable, less insipid animal rights groups in your communities.
