Sci-fi

Fantasy has wizards that can waste entire armies.

Sci-fi has spaceship weaponry that can take out entire planets.

Fantasy would win the battle, but sci fi would win the war. Its as simple as one side has nukes and the ability to destroy entire systems.

You mix them both into a delishus cocktail and quit bitching, that's what you do.

I think Fantasy might win through contrived means, because...y'know...it's fantasy.

Sci-fi is fantasy in the future, where magic is called technology.
Why chose one when we can have both?
Like how several Final Fantasy games mix them.

That is looking at fantasy as only your medieval style magic spell and sword play thing. If you choose to look at fantasy as anything that couldn't happen in reality then it is way more expansive than sci-fi, which has to still be scientific enough to be considered at least somewhat realistic. In fantasy you could have a god character that can exist in an infinite number of places at once and can turn anything to dust by looking at it or someone who can turn their imagination into reality at will. At that point anything that can contest that I think would cease to be realistic enough to be considered science fiction.

Well, fantasy can pretty much call the God card depending on the setting, so they would clearly win.
Oh please, I highly doubt a God would even put a scuff on his shoes...

Fantasy has Magic, Gods, Gods, Goddesses, more Gods, Demigods and demigoddesses. Oh, and Gods. Did I mention all the Gods?

Sci-fi can't beat Gods.

L'edito: Damn ninjas. Maybe I should spend less time per post typing the word Gods.
hmm... Doesnt Warhammer 40k have thier gods aswell... the daemon thingy's and so on ? :)
Not Daemon thingys they are dark chaos gods, representing the 4 horrors of the universe! they will crush you just with a glance. and yes they do have a various assortment of gods that they can pull the 'god card' on.
Sci-fi winss because the only thing fantasy barely has going for it is the god card and that is very losse. And there soldiers numbers are either couintered withthe technology or countered in numbers as well as with the technology bonus. The sci fi armour can be near impervious from the fantasy weapons, not to metion the ability to scare the enemy into submission in just a few battles. I could go on and on with this but that would be long.

To all those saying sci-fi, i would just like to point this out: The gods don't care about science. They made a living out of defying it.

I still think fantasy would win even if it was just an army of wizards though 'cause magic as a whole doesn't seem to care much about the laws of physics. What we hail as the most impressive science is the one that defies laws of physics, or rather, tames them. Like the gravity gun.

Say a wizard just turned off gravity as a whole for the poor space marines and watched them drift into the great eternity.

Im assuming Gods cant get in on this so Sci-Fi. Seeing as most of their weapons would kill the fuck out of any magic I think its a pretty safe bet that the Space Marines/SPARTANS/Specters could win.

the are both equal in my eyes fantasy is just sci-fi in a more natural setting and sci-fi is just fantasy that can be explained.

I'd say fantasy wins. Magic is a solve-all sort of power, whereas science is limited to what could be considered possible. For instance, Science fiction can't bring people back to life because it's impossible to do so. Resuscitate yes, but if somebody falls into a black hole they're kinda screwed. But in fantasy you can conjure people from the aether and just say "Well I magicked them into existence.

Also in fantasy you can just teleport people to "Away" and there's no way in hell a scientist can find wherever "Away" is, it could be a marshmallow planet with hot chocolate rivers colonized by cannibalistic gummy bears. There's no beating magic.

I really like this question. The idea of Sci-Fi and Fantasy in fact being two separate things, but things we both love oh so much.

Like Starwars and Lord of the Rings.

Why should they have to be mutually exclusive? I LOVE watching a team of mages land on the planet's surface to take on a Mad scientist's army of Mech driving crystal golems.

Depends on your stance on magic and how powerful it will be. All the tech in the world cant stop a poewrful spell. Or break through it.

I'd like to point out that science could easily win the ground battle as well. The most useful thing about firearms is that they require almost no training to be used, and you don't have to stand in intimidating and pretty lines to use them. An army of horse-backed mounted swordsman would just get creamed about a hundred or two hundred yards away. there goes about 5 years of training, and if you want more, another 5 years are going to have to be spent training them.
You can't pull the gods, cause they have their own set up and could side with sci-fi if they feel they have the stronger chance of victory. Quite a few fantasy gods don't like humanity cause they created them, they like them because they are the strongest guys on the planet who still worship them. But it would still be interesting, because if the gods do side with fantasy, it would be a very close match, until the commander goes "oh well I've had my fun. Biological, nuclear and all sorts of other nasty bombs ftw!" and then drops them hard on the planet.

I think you're underestimating the power of a god.
