Poll: shotgun or sniper which do you prefer?

I have Rainbow six Vegas 2.
You can snipe with a shotgun in that game.

As a matter of principle, I avoid the use of shotguns in multiplayer due to how annoying I find it to be killed by them.
Example of such annoyances is below, translated from xbox live language into proper English.

Guy with shotgun: Exuberance! I have killed you.
Me: Yes indeed my good man, however did you do it?
Guy with shotgun: Why good sir, I do believe that I used this shotgun to shoot your genitals at close range. Thus proving that I am superior in the field of digital battles.
Me: But good sir, you did not even aim your weapon. I feel that no skill was involved on your party and I am most indignant towards the foul tactics that you have employed.
Guy with shotgun: If that is truly the way you feel, then perhaps I shall make my character repeatedly crouch over the body of your fallen character. Signifying that I am partaking in a lewd act.
Me: How crude. I do not approve.
Guy with shotgun Further exuberance!

I prefer Sub Machine Guns, Assault Rifles and Light Machine guns.
Or swords.

I am finding a way to put that onto a poster.

You guys only pick sniper because just like Sarge said in Red vs. Blue "you're taking the cowards way out with a sniper!". Being all far away picking off your openents without them being able to shoot back.

I use shotgun because I know how to use it... And stay alive!

Honestly botht he shotgun and sniper are cheap in lots of games. I mostly go assault rifle or SMG.

Nothing funnier than a Sniper panic from a shotgun wielding psycho bearing down on him.

Apart from if it's a flamethrower wielding psycho.

It hardly takes a genius in aiming just to point your gun down a long corridor.

it depends on the game in COD i always snipe as not everyone can do it (well). but in something like halo where its point and click until its dead i prefer the shotgun, gain height drop from above and then hide

If sniping is at all effective I'll go for the sniper rifle, but for some games (I'm looking at you L4D) it just isn't an option at higher levels of play.
So sniping unless the shotgun is vastly more effective - corridor fights or hordes of enemies come to mind.

I'm more of a sniper by nature, but that's probably an aspect of precise personality.

Incidentally, playing nothing but a sniper build in Far Cry 2 and then doing shotgun deathmatch is good for a laugh.

I'd much rather have a sniper in war, with a sniper you "Observe" the battle, then make your move, giving you plenty of time to plan ahead.

1-shotting things is more fun, so I pick sniper. Not that walking right up to someone's face and letting loose with a shotgun ain't fun, of course. But sniper-headshots in games with good physics just can't be beat.

I snipe, and then charge up with nothing but a knife, noone expects it and you get a lot of good kills

Personally I perfer the melee weapons.... No reload baby.

Singleplayer: I love the idea of sniping my enemy from an unseen location. It can really add to the sense that you can't die, so you've got to use your cunning.

Multiplayer: Don't care about dying. I know I'll respawn. I usually charge in there. That said I do so with an assualt weapon of some sort.

So neither, really.

Honestly,

In a real FPSer's case, it'd be like asking a contractor which he prefered, a screwdriver or a hammer.. a shotgun and a sniper are 2 different tools you can use to kill your enemy, and in different situations, they're the correct tool for the job.
