SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS

you have been warned.

basically, im playing thorugh Dead Space 2 now, im about 3 hours through, and i'm shooting babies. i've already shot about 60 children no older than 12, but im now walking thorugh a nursery, listening to crying children and shooting mutated babies, which explode.

fuck MW2's airport scene, fuck Medal of Honours Taliban, this strikes me as over the line. had i known in advance there was this sort of content i would probably not have bought it.
Oh gosh, relax it's a bunch of pixels on a screen, you're not holding a real gun, you're not really Isac, you're not actually shooting babies, but you're actually complaining about it. Grow up dude; it's a video game that's meant to get in your head (It's not scary by any means but that was their goal). If you don't want to risk having anything bad happen in a video game buy an E rated game, otherwise, quit whining about it.

Look hurting children is terrible, but why is it an absolute tabuu along basically every form of media when we have such horrific tools of destruction for ever form of an adult?

Perhaps DeadSpace is trying to tap into that psychological part of your brain for once rather than just scare the living hell out of you. Then again, maybe they were just trying to be scary and failed miserably, either way I think it's a very creative twist [although HORRIBLY grotesque] to the average gameplay of simply "shoot this it looks evil". I haven't seen these babies though, so I wouldn't know.

Well you did do the exact same thing in dead space 1, so it's your own dang fault.

Good for you.

I thought the exploding babies were hilarious.
O.T. I thought it was an awesome part hell the nursery is my second favorite part of the game
right behind when you revisit the Ishimura. Babies aren't some kind of sacred cow anymore and i'm gonna agree with Miracle and go with saying it was hilarious. Except when you first see it and a lady hugs one of the babies. That scene is burned in my mind as being filled with all kind of fuckery.
Oh side note everyone should read the WalkingDead Graphic novel.
I love it because..
1. Its about zombies
2. Author doesn't give a shit about sacred cows and will do what you thought most authors would cringe at.

Isn't there a (written) law against depicting violence and death of children bellow a certain age in the media?

How does this surprise you when the game's main advertisement is reactions of "mothers" who say this will turn kids evil, and then ends with "And your moms gonna hate it?"

Anyway, its a game, and they're evil. Do you want them to grow up and kill you cause you left them alone? So no, it doesnt bother me. Mainly cause of the bolded part really.

I bet the 7 people that voted "Yes" misread the question as "Should I apply for a job at Faux News?"

I would give your opinion more credence if a) it didn't make sense in the context of the game and, b) if you didn't take the situation out of context so drastically in a misguided attempt to make an irrelevant point.

1) as other people have mentioned: Necromorphs actively seek to subvert all biological material to their needs. That includes babies.

2) These 'babies' theoretically will shortly be trying to attack and consume every human they can find. This isn't walking into a nursery at a hospital and killing defenseless neonates.

3) sorry to be harsh, but get a spine. Games != reality. What is the 'psychic cost' of shooting babies in DS2? Answer? NOTHING. It's a video game, and much like a movie, anyone with any hold on reality wouldn't look at those babies as anything more than an element in a story being told. Next thing I know you'll be telling me that Chuckie is offensive because he's a child's toy, or it was wrong of the various characters in the Alien series to kill chestbursters because they are 'baby aliens'.

Or hell, that it's wrong to kill the eggs in Joust, because they're baby pterodactyls.

See where I'm going with this?

---

The TL;DR version is: I'm sorry, you're wrong. It's a shame that you find it repugnant, and feel free to stop playing the game, but it does not cross any line so don't try to go on a crusade about it. Things like the Columbine mod and Postal II are far more reprehensible in my eyes, and yet I don't evangelize against them, because I recognize that they are still in an entertainment medium, and honestly, to promote art, you must put the onus of selectivity upon the consumer, not the producer. If you do not, you smother creativity.

OH and PROTIP there is a tag you can use: [ spoiler ] (remove the spaces) [ /spoiler ] that is far more effective than posting SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS at the beginning of your post.

Well, It's kind of a massive spoiler so view at your own risk.

Apparently, contact with the Marker caused a formula to be embedded in Issac's mind. The formula is the key to making more Markers.

In order to access this information, Issac has to get into a machine that sticks a needle directly into his eye.

During the segment, you have to control the needle as it goes into his eye and if you fuck up the needle gets jammed in too far and kills him.

It's a really messed up segment but also totally awesome.

So you're upset that pixels were rearranged in a different fashion?

You do know that no babies have died from you shooting pixels, right?
No! Bad Escapist!

You can't claim games are art and are a legitimate form for expressing ideas and then fall back to "It's just a game"!

It's always 'just a game' or never 'just a game', they don't get to be deep and meaningful and evocative only when it suits gaming. Over three decades of increasing realism to bring the player closer to the action invalidates the claim of it just 'being pixels', that's not how the developer intended it to be viewed.
We'll the thing is you are suppose to get drawn into the game. But what it all comes down to, is it is just that: a game.
While yes you may get scared and squeamish when playing the game, just cause they made it that way, but you come down to it is just pixels and lines of code.

Paintings are art, but they are just cloth and color paint on them.

I personally love how they had babies and children in the games. Now I realize that makes me look like a sick fuck, but I work retail, and after having the crawlers in DS 2 sneak up on me a few times, hearing a baby yell at his mom for something freaked me out. Its like the spook factor of the game stayed with me after I had shut off the system. It also puts the point across that when it comes down to it, nothing is safe or sacred when someone/thing wants to further it goals.

I'm a huge wuss when it comes to scary stuff, so I'm clearly not suited for a game like this, I couldn't even finish Doom 3. So naturally, I research and avoid what I don't like, now why is that so hard? The box, every preview/review, screenshots and trailers clearly show this game to be disgustingly violent, gory and creepy, and if you bought it without knowing what kind of game it was, you can blame yourself. I hate to think about the moronic parents who will inevitably buy this game for their kids, you can probably mess a kid up somewhat.

Dead Space happens in a mining ship. Only adults. Dead Space 2 happens in a colony. Everyday folks live there, so of course there would be children. Its more realistic than there being all adults

I mention how my GF had a pretty comical reaction to that scene. Nothing makes most ladies more shocked than exploding babies!

The lurkers (babies that crawl around on the walls/ceiling) were in the first game. They actually had a pretty gruesome scripted intro for the creature involving a man running for his life. I don't remember why they had babies on a mining ship however.

Goes with my simple Videogame philosphy: If it moves, carries a weapon (or in the case of Dead Space, is basically a weapon), and intends to kill me, I kill it first. Man, Woman, or even a child, doesnt matter, for im shooting and killing pixels, and I have to kill them in many cases to win.

IRL, I would never want to find out if I could take the life of someone who wishes to kill me, and I most deffinitly dont want to know if I would shoot a child, even if said child was armed with an AK and plans to kill me.

The fact that a horror games can make you seriously dislike what you are forced to do means that its working.
