In order of personal importance: Cyndaquil, Charmander, Treecko, and D/P/Pl can fuck off because they ruined the franchise.

Of course, I'm biased towards the Gold/Silver/Crystal generation due to them being the first Pokemon games I picked up. But still, what could be more intimidating then a towering flaming bear staring you down? Other than Cthulu, obviously.

Edit: to further elaborate, Charmander is highly badass and evolves into a firebreathing dragon, the very incarnation of all that is awesome in fantasy monsters. Treecko, of course, is cool in a calm, collected manner, and maintains the power of a fully evolved pokemon withoute being so massively overblown in its design. And the Diamond/Pearl/Platinum generation... Jeezus. Not only are they all either A), inanely designed, B), rehashes/new evolutions of older pokemon, or C), all of the above, but the gameplay just sucked. I mean, not only do trainers no longer level up when you use the VS seeker, but it can't be used in Victory Road?! What was that? [/irrelavent rant]

pratically speaking, bulbasaur was the way forward.. but in the later stages, i think everyone was fond of the dragon charmander became. It was far more interesting than the giant plant which the little bulba became.

I've got a question for whoever happens by this thread.

I'm gonna pick Charmander on my next playthrough, and likely raise a Gyrados to go along with it. What's a good third Pokemon to train?

P.S.: I'm only picking Charmander this time, because I've heard it makes the game harder.

Squirtle, end result? Giant turtle with cannons. WIN.

Charizard doesn't even make sense, doesn't he die if his flame goes out? How does he fly if he can't let his tail light stop flashing?

If that's what you've always noticed, then you're completely wrong.
Well, I never said I was right or something like "it's always like this". I just said "I've always noticed." That means an opinion that applies to me, not a fact. I'm sure other people see differently because I just read their posts.

btw, id like to hear about that multiplication glitch.
Okay. To the best of my knowledge, it works on only the Red and Blue versions.
First, you have to make sure the item you want to duplicate is the sixth item in your backpack.
Then, you go to Viridian city to talk to the old man. Play like a dumbass and say you would like to see how Pokemon are caught. He'll do his demonstration on a Weedle or something.
After the demonstration is over, IMMEDIATELY fly to Cinnibar Island, and then go to the far right coast of the island, then surf up and down alongside the gym.
The first Pokemon you encounter should look like a jumble of static. It'll still behave like a water Pokemon, though. Catch it if you want (you really shouldn't, actually).
When the battle is over, get out of the water, and check your backpack. Hey, presto, your sixth item has been duplicated so much, it's over 99, and the game had to resort to displaying the numbers using random icons.
Enjoy.

Cyndaquil... Because you cannot deny that an adorable flaming hedgehog that evolves into an adorable, badass badger that can turn itself into a rolling fireball is completely epic. Also, because Gen 2 is completely better than Gen 1 in almost every aspect.
What did I just say about Gen 2? There was no Gen 2.

Move along, Sir.
I disagree, and maintain that there was indeed a second Generation.
Wikipedia seems to read otherwise, my friend.
wikipedia. the page is very biased agenst the new gen.( eyes whistler )
i have never got to play cuz of issues but i would choose charmander.
and now to make you angry i would also choose torchick and tirtwig.(lookes at whistler once more)

Of course, I only include Generation One because everyone knows that there were only three Pokemon games.
How can you say that, when Generation One itself was three versions of one game?

I always pick the grass-type and it has always worked great for me. When I try one of the other two, it never works as well.

Squirtle = Better attack and defense.
Bulbasaur = Better special attack and defense.
Charmander = Better speed.

I always chose Squirtle out of personal preference, but this pretty much shows that Squirtle and Bulbasaur are the best.

In the first generation, I always chose Bulbasaur. After the first generation I always chose fire types, except for one instance in which I chose Chikorita.

Gen 1 was definitely Squirtle. He learned Bubble quickly, allowing you to beat Brock without much effort. He could also hold his own against Misty. By the time you got to Lt. Surge, you could switch him out with a different set of Pokemon.

Gen 2 is more of an opinion matter, but I'm going with either Totodile or Cyndaquil on this one. Totodile had some great moves he learned early, and Cyndaquil came in handy against Buggsy.

I never got to generation 3... was it Chimchar or Torchic?

Charmander. There were (and always are) a buttload more water and grass types than fire types. In the originals, fire types were basically exclusive to Magmar, Charmander, and Moltres as far as I can remember.

In second, Bulbasaur because there wasn't a grass-type legendary.

Squirtle. Because he turns into a giant turtle with cannons on his back. That, my friends, is what's known as a win.

Nah-uh!

Ponyta was in the Abandoned mansion, and I'm sure you could get Vulpix in at least one of those versions.

Charmander... because although beating the first two gyms is hard.... its smooth sailing from there.
Oh and burning shit is AWESOME!
