You know what I do to the idiots who just want to collect hats? I pin them to the wall with my Vintage Huntsman through their fancy fedora. Quit bitching and get over yourself, you entitled person. You don't like it? Quit playing. Meanwhile, I'll still be enjoying the funnest online shooter out there and not paying a penny for it. I consider whatever items I get to be a nice bonus/presents for my friends when they join anyways. This isn't going to affect the way I play in the slightest, except for all the additional noobslaying I'll be doing. Maybe it's time I start on Scout achievements while it's easy...

More noobs to slay

How exactly does one grief in TF2? We have server admins?
Well yesterday, I was putting my porno spray all over the place while another player (named "Princess Celestia," hilariously) tried to cover it up only for me to place it elsewhere (with increasingly elaborate locations) eventually, his spray was placed underneath mine. At which point I gleefully disconnected to solve printer issues.

Does that count?
No because if it were the real celestia you'd be with Wheatley orbiting the moon for 1000 years.

Do not fuck with her. Seriously.
Oh please, the server I was on said that players could do whatever the hell they want. She should have known what she was getting into.
*sound of crashing*
Pr-princess Celestia!? Please forgive me!
"No."
NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!
*banned*

In all fairness, most of the people that would have paid for the game would have by now, or got it at one of the other events where it's been free (or close to it). TF2 has slowly been turning F2P for a while now, this is the logical conclusion.

Now people with the game can play with friends who otherwise wouldn't have bought the game, and Valve can now just live off the store (which will likely get a boost because of this update).

I personally think it was a good move by Valve.

Speaking as a longtime TF2 player (October 2007), I for one enjoy the various updates and the new content it brings. Yes it hasn't always been perfect, but it's kept people interested and playing for far longer than if there weren't any updates. Besides, I like trying out the new gear. Since the unlocks are meant to be sidegrades, they're (mostly) well balanced with the stock items and encourage different ways to play rather than better ways. It's not meant to be a "pay to win" game.

If new potential players had no interest in the game, they wouldn't have downloaded it in the first place. It will more likely be a repeat of when the game first launched: a huge influx initially to see what the fuss is about, then it will taper off as people move on. Sure there will be some idiot hackers and griefers, but they tend to exhibit short attention spans and will soon move on to other games to troll (besides, Valve has stated that they're going to keep a vigilant eye out for such players). However, there will undoubtedly be some players that like the game so much that they'll settle in for the long haul. Instead of shunning them, we veteran players should welcome them in. After all, what is a multiplayer game without a thriving community?

I bought TF2 as part of the Orange Box, which means I only spent $20 or so on the game. It quickly became my favorite multiplayer game (and still is), and it has since provided 1000+ hours of fun for me. If I had to do it all over again and I could choose between buying it or waiting years for it to become free, I would buy it again in a heartbeat.

They ruined it with the introduction of balance breaking items (ubersaw, wrangler etc).
Ubersaw? balance breaking?
Seriously?
No, it's not. It's an opportunistic thing that is very situational. The wrangler is debatable, since wrangled sentries can miss, but normal sentries don't.
Weapons that are really broken are/were the equalizer at release, the backburner at release the huntspam at release especially and the new weapons in the uber update (the new demoman weapons especially; Full turn control while charging? kthxbye.)

Free to play doesn't hurt it in the least, if anything more goons online=more fun. It won't be like it was before they started trying to make money off micro transactions, but it's still fun in small doses (particularly with friends).
Agreed.

I can't be bothered replying properly to this stupidity so instead I'm going to roll my eyes upward and shake my head slightly.

The only good argument that you make is that the servers will mostly be full for a while. But all this crap things like "OMFG they addes ITEMS, this game is RUINED!!!1!" is just asinine. I voted for "go die in a fire".

Hey, just starting this with a bit of a rant. I love TF2. It's one of my favourite games. Well, it WAS. Since September 30, 2010, The MannConomy update, TF2 has been on a slippery slope to complete ruin. Today, it's finally happened.
Oh god here we go.

TF2 is dead.
First, it started with the items.
Being able to buy them.
Something you never, ever had to do. Ever. Not one red cent. Everything had a chance to drop, most everything (save keys) are craft-able. Trash the crates and you don't even have to deal with it being there.

The constant, neverending stream of crappy, pointless community items with only miniscule, barely noticeable stat changes.
None of which you ever had to equip or bother with if you didn't want to. Trash them.
More and more and more items, completely burying us under pointless community content.
Yes. how dare that 'community' express themselves creatively and design new maps and gear, NONE OF WHICH YOU HAVE TO DEAL WITH IF YOU DON'T WANT TO.
The final straw came today.

The Uber update introduced free to play forever. Team Fortress 2 is now open to the public to play forever for free.
AFTER three years and price dropping as low as 2.50 at some points? BETRAYAL!

Now, every server is crammed with hundreds of people who, in all likelihood, have no interest whatsoever in the game. Most times, when you get a new player, they want to get better, want to get good at the game, want to actually do something with themselves. When a game is free to play, however, a time dreaded by most who already own it, this is when the absolute assclowns and griefers come out to play.
Play on a good server. Admins take care of the rest.

The thing that I take offense to the most, though, is what they decided to offer those who already paid for the game.

We get a hat.
We ALL get a hat. The same hat.

This hat is just an insult. When other games have become free to play, they offered some sort of compensation to the people who actually paid the $20 for it. We get a hat. They're insulting us. They're waving their bloody item system, the start of all this crap, in our faces and taunting us for actually caring enough to pay for it.
What you got is a game that has been out for four years, and supported for free during that entire period. You did not have to part with a single extra dollar unless you had really, for some reason, could not live without a hat. You have gotten new maps, new weapons, community-driven events, new features, everything of the sort. For. Four. Years. And then after that, after a game has been out for FOUR years, they go ahead and open it up to a wider community and you're upset? What the hell did you expect? Valve to inscribe your name in gold at their headquarters? You paid around $20 for a game (or bought it as part of a package) nearly four years ago. Get over yourself.

Well I'm terribly sorry that I can now enjoy a game without paying a cent because a developer decided to make their game open to the public. How dare I must truly be a monster/troll/scab. Lets not give us new players some benefit of the doubt lets just label them and complain.

I did too, and if I wasn't so poor I would buy extra copies for my friends. I would also buy tons of items in the Mann Co. store to give out as gifts to my friends. I've gotten so much entertainment out of this game that I would love to support VALVe's future endeavors... if I wasn't so poor.

This is really all I can add to the subject, quit overreacting, the world isn't going to end, the game is still the same and those of use who already own the game are missing nothing. It'd be BS if they made all of us have F2P accounts and then force us all to buy it again.

So, as the Heavy would say:

You know what you got for paying? Years of playing a great game, getting to watch it grow, and a hat. Stop whining and enjoy what you have. As for the servers being full of new guys, its been like that after every update. After a week or so, they'll be more experienced and fun to play with. In the mean time, have fun topping the servers

Well, ironically, it was this thread that informed me that Team Fortress 2 is now free to play.
It's downloading as I write this.

Got the Orange box for £15 two years ago.

Clocked over 400 hours on tf2.

It becomes free.

I am ok with this. Means people who I know that have been iffy about getting it can join me in game.

I only recently received it as a gift from a friend before it went free-to-play and I ever got to touch it in its original incarnation. At this point, however, I'm actually scared to try it because it seems like the learning curve and time necessary to actually become decent and collect the right items just isn't worth it.

I've also always had a problem with F2P models because they really are bait for idiots I don't want to deal with. I would never pay monthly for an MMO, so I was always restricted to F2P games and had some pretty horrible experiences with the communities in them.

So, yeah, I think this is a bad idea. I also feel terrible for everyone who paid full price for the game at the beginning of its life.

I'm pretty cool about it. When I first saw it, I said WTF? But then, I realized I had not played the game since St. Patrick's Day and thought, well, more players might give me more interest in the game now. The only thing I will say about the compensation thing is this: The hat is cool and all, but maybe if they had let us pick one free cosmetic item that we wanted, so that not everyone who has the 'premium' game would not all look the same.

Other than that, as F2P goes, this seems to be one of the best implementations I have seen. There's no real barrier to enjoying the game if you get the freemium account, just less backpack space, and lesss options for cosmetic things. As for the weapons, I stick by the stock layout 90% of the time anyway, so I don't think the new folk will be missing out on much. Plus, I won't have to see a bunch of trade spam from the new players, as they aren't allowed to do so.
