Someone made a nice list of more than one above, but I'll add a couple to it.
-Why exactly does President Eden, the super-smart artificial intelligence, give the crux of his (retarded) plan to a known enemy? He forces you to take it even if you tell him openly that his plan is bullshit.
-Why did the President want to put the FEV in the water in the first place? Cutting your breeding population down to a hundred is called a population bottleneck, and causes severe problems for a species. A super computer should know more about biology than me.

the "Courier with amnesia bullshit" is too old.
At what point did the game -ever- tell you that your character has amnesia? Your background is left blank so you can play the character you want. In Fallout 3 you were railroaded through one (bad) story, with one possible character, to one possible ending. I'll take no details over a forced, poorly written history every time.

It doesn't, everyone just assumes the Courier has amnesia because Extra Credits said that in one of their episodes, even though there is no proof of this.

I like the extra control you get with New Vegas to play how you want to play i.e. not being having to be "nice" to the Brotherhood (or the Good Guys) to complete the game, but Fallout 3 has a few more memorable moments (Andale, Tranquilty Lane, Raven Rock, Tenpenny Tower, Paradise Falls, The Vaults, Republic of Dave, etc ... and of course Megaton).

They are different branches of the same tree. One is more linear with better set-pieces. The other has more options and better choices. They both have atmospheres that befit setting.

The DLC on the other hand is easy, The Pitt

To answer the original question, I liked both enough to put in 300+ hours in each, but I am gonna have to go with Fallout 3 with Three Dog clinching home the otherwise neck and neck race for Team Fallout 3.

Honestly, I've never read any reviews for New Vegas. Actually, I never read any game reviews. I play the game myself before having an opinion on it. I don't think it's a need for validation.
(for example, my favorite game of all time is Oblivion and people think I'm nuts.) I was honestly curious. I've seen many mixed opinions on the matter in forums.
Personally, I found that New Vegas was great. But in my opinion, not as good as Fallout 3.

I'm really having a hard time choosing, so I'll just go with both equally.

*How the hell does a society of small children manage to survive and procreate? And why haven't they been massacred by the Super Mutants yet?
That's easy.

Because kids in Fallout are damn invincible.

Have you ever tried to shoot one? They don't die. They just run around in circles and cry.

They don't need to procreate, they just go around the wasteland sometimes, finding other invincible kids who's non-invincible parents died, and take them in.

That's why we're called "mungos." Because we are a lesser being to them, with our vulnerable bodies. When they turn 16, something in their body snaps, or breaks, and they are mortal again.

The children do not like such filth in their utopia, so they get banished.

They're equal to me. Both have their strengths and weaknesses. Fallout 3 has more interesting locations overall, while New Vegas tends to play better in the control department.

P.S. Are you trying to start a flame war?

Fallout 3, better story, better locations, LESS CRASHES, better mods thus far (Come on, you got Mothership Zeta crew and Last child of Galifrey in Fallout 3, that's awesome)

The music, man. The music.

Also, I have to grudgingly admit that Fallout 3 did have more to explore.
Yeah, I have to admit that is true,

Everything else is subjective, and those I can accept. But come on better story? No one can seriously mean that?

Fallout 3 story was kinda crap to be nice to it.

I've played both, and I much prefer Fallout 3. While I do LOVE New Vegas' Assault Carbine and NCR Veteran Armor, Fallout 3 just had a better setting for me. I'm not a fan of deserts. Plus I hated having to deal with different factions. I was friends with nearly all of them (No easy task, given I hated them all save the Boomers), but the fact that they all would hate me for just wearing my favorite outfit really bugged me.

And New Vegas was any better?
Yes, actually. Name a serious plot failure in New Vegas.
Name one plot failure in F3.

OT: I like Fallout 3 more. Why? The game is Genius.
Story Wise? Look at the Extra Credits episode for the short story. But basicaly, the "Courier with amnesia bullshit" is too old. Fallout 3 feels more like "Your story". From beggining to end. Every person you kill, every building you explore.
I liked the story for NV that was a little bit wacky but for all of you complaining about "Fallout 3 being to Dull", this is the Apocalypse.
What new vegas gets right are the factions though, in an apocalyptic setting things would be a lot like this. I guess new vegas could have been better if they had spent more time recreating the engine. The game is way more polished sure, but the graphics and character creation are unacceptable, even for 2010. They should have used a new engine.

Hey, don't get me wrong, I don't dislike the game, I just think it wasn't very innovative.

Fallout 3 has a MUCH better area, way more interesting side-quests and a more inspired design. However, Fallout 3's main quest is boring as all fuck, DR is useless, caps and stimpaks are eveywhere, your choices mean shit (seriously, post-main quest plays out the same no matter what you do), and the weapons are pretty boring.

Fallout New Vegas has MUCH better gameplay and gameplay elements (DT and such), and the main quest is sooooooooooooo much more involving. However, it's shitty in every other like. The map is so fucking dull (ITS JUST SAND), side-quests are boring and nearly non-existent, and every NPC feels completely useless and unimportant.

That being said, I prefer Fallout 3, but I've dumped over 3000+ hours into the entire Fallout series and love every single Fallout.

Fallout 3 by a landslide. I couldn't get into NV at all. Just didn't work for me. Fallout 3 I found was a lot more immersive, a bigger actual map, and it's simpler. I don't like the whole herb gathering, different ammo thing, just all of the extra stuff I feel like Obsidian just crammed into the game just for shits and giggles. 3 is just more fun. To be honest if the colors of a game being bleaker ruin the fun for you then you need to seriously rethink about your thoughts on what "fun" is.

Sorry, but evil former governments vs unicycle-cowboy-robots and people in football outfits, I choose evil former governments.
Also, if you want a reasoned debate, please do. If you're just going to whine until I give up and stop posting, pleas don't. I'm hoping for a reasoned debate. :D
