I liked FF4 to FF10 other than that i disliked the rest.... even tough i dont like, i respect FF1 to FF3, since theyre the ones that innovated the system....

Other than that FFx-2 sucked, FFxi was meh, FFxii i hated it because of Vaan.... i never hated anything this much in my whole life, FFxiii was booooooooring.... it was more of a movie (a horrible hd one) then a game itself.... and FFxiv is... well.... buggy.... its not bad, but its also not exactly playable :S (but i still have hopes for this one...

Off course my favourite was FF IX, mostly because it was the one that made me interested in the franchise, and the one that had a cast of characters that i loved, along with a story and setting that i really liked....

Wow...do people seriously not even bother to skim a thread before posting? I mean, I'm guilty of the same thing sometimes, but come on.

The OP has said it at least twice now: you can only put 8 options in a poll, so he went with 7 onward. THE OTHERS WOULDN'T FIT.

Admittedly, yes, eight spots means one more game, either VI or XIV, could have been included. However, neither was. If you have to give support for 6, just SAY so. The random insulting of the OP and complaining about why oh why oh why was the BEST FINAL FANTASY GAME EVAR (and that's a hugely arguable point) excluded from the poll is REALLY annoying.

Can I suggest Chrono Trigger?
I know it doesn't have the Final Fantasy name but it is a similar style and it's a fantastic game.

IX or X
They were the best ones.
Don't play VII, it was really horrible and I don't get why the fanboys love it. Probably because it was the first one in 3D.
Story was terribad.
Just cause you don't like it doesn't mean it wasn't great.

No Final Fantasy 4 or 6? They were by far the best, followed by 7. I could never really get into 8 and after, it just seemed liked a graphics-gasm of emo characters and fancy cut-scenes.

I saw this thread and was surprised to see IX winning, so I went and spent the $10 on it from the PSN....

Holy shit! The beginning is great! I am so happy you made this thread, and I saw how people voted. I was a FF VII and XIII guy, I didn't like the older ones that much because of the constant- explore every inch of this boring sand castle till you discover some side tower way off to the side....

Now I have a new (for me) a jrpg I am enjoying. I was always under the impression the first hour (at least) was a test/task to be completed, now I am enjoying an exciting new world.

I know I sound kinda cheesy, but I don't care!

Thanks for making this thread that just happened to guide me to something I like.
I was surprised to find FFIX winning, too. When it first came out, FFIX was fairly unpopular (for a Final Fantasy, I mean). It was derided by some, but mostly it was just ignored. Often its fans blame the colourful presentation and the deliberate reversion to more traditional Final Fantasy elements; personally, I think it's more that the timing wasn't right. FFVII and FFVIII were insanely big sellers at the time, and the latter turned many off the series.

It seems that FFIX has since been rediscovered. I still hold it up as one of the series' finest.

I loved it when it came out. Imagine is IX were popular when it came out. We may have missed out on X, but there may have been a return to the more old school Final Fantasys.

8 has a frustrating magic system, but if you don't expect anything, you shouldn't be too annoyed. I loved the story and the Junction system with the summon creatures. The characters look human in that one, rather than cartoony.

I would choose 8.
I really wouldn't. The human looking characters make their idiocy stand out so much. They wander to mount doom and back just to find people and then immediately hand them over to who ever asks without a second thought. Not only that, but the game basically pulls plot resolutions out of it's backside without any thought towards reason or even basic sense. Perhaps if they looked like idiots, I'd be more forgiving to the horrible writing, but they have to throw in realistic rendering that would give all the protagonists wrist injuries whenever they so much as pick up their favourite weapon.

Did you at least like the gunblade? Trigger!!!! :p
I am officially creeped out.

I don't want to rant on too long, so all I'll say is this. The aesthetic shift from cartoony to realistic just didn't work with the paradoxical shift from environments and objects grounded in reality, or at least plausibility within the established logic of the game, to environments and objects that look like that just for the heck of it.

Tactics was AMAZING, by far the best Final Fantasy game ever made. However, out of the main series, I'd say X was the best.

Honestly all of the games listed were great with the exception of XI and XIII. I enjoyed them all immensely. You really can't go wrong with any of the PS1/PS2 era FF games.

I'd say start out with FF9 and maybe follow it with ten then you can experiment. True FF6 had one of the bests storys but sometimes 32 bit graphics can be a bit of a deterrent for those starting out with the series. FF IX had a relatively simple story (without becoming dumb) that kept good pace, likeable characters (ok Kuja isnt the most terrifying of villains but hey) and the leveling system was pretty straight foward (unlike ff7 and ff8 where you had to take a college class just to be able to have fun with the system). Ten had better graphics and the ability to change characters in the middle of battle helped but some of the characters could be a little annoying at times (I'm looking at you Yuna and Tidus) and yes one dreadfull cutscene about laughter but pretty good overall. Seven...dont start with seven. Yes it has an inmense world, one of the best villains around, and some of the coolest characters around but it is also extremely convoluted, a tad long in some places, and... yeah its just not a good starting FF. Thats my two cents.

Meh, they're all flawed in their own little ways, but X was the first one I ever played, and it got me into video games in general, so I'd say it was good.

I think VI was better, but that's not on your list.
