actually it's a term that's been used since the 80s to describe certain rock acts that didn't quite fit into the rock, punk or metal genresclairedelune said:OK. This thread makes me angry.
1) Alternative Rock is a genre iTunes made up.
they are no where close to metal, more grunge or funk than metal. they always have and always will be alternative2) Rage Against the Machine IS NOT ALTERNATIVE ROCK i just saw someone posted that and it made me shake my head in disappointment. They are metal in the broadest sense, but rap-metal really.
you do realize that grunge is one of the many sub-genres of alternative right? they were played on the same stations that played alternative music and were very popular with alternative music fans in the 80s and 90s when grunge started to sprout4) I just saw someone list Nirvana. Also wrong. That would be grunge.
ummmm hate to say this but alternative is a very broad genre of music with many sub-genres, it rivals and probably surpasses metal for the broadness of its genres. i've listened to alternative for a long time and well i could pick 5 cds that are vastly different but still considered alternative music.5) People who are defending alternative rock seem to have no idea what it means because they are just throwing together a bunch of their favorite rock bands which all belong in different subgenres.
wow wrong on both accounts.Ayrav said:Nirvana is a lot more grunge then punk. I would give that crown of first real grunge band to Dinosaur Jr. though.
Love it. Then again if it has guitars, it's on my approval list.steakheart said:Everyone seems to think Alternative Rock is "emo." I personally think that there is nothing "emo" about it. I mean, sure, some of the songs are kind of... scream-y (I try to stay away from those, with the exception of Flyleaf), and some might have a slighly depressing meaning, but what exactly is the difference from listening to Three Days Grace and playing Silent Hill? Well, except for the fact that one you listen to, one you play, and one you watch. Again, I just don't get it.
So what I'm asking is this: what are your opinions on Alternative Rock? Do you think it is "emo?" If so, why?
ok then metal or rock aren't genres or music by that logic because they encompass so many different types of music. also the same argument can be made for both of them and what people do and don't like under the metal and rock umbrellas. you're argument really fails because it's full of big holes that are easily proven wrong.clairedelune said:@cleverlymadeup - I think you were missing the point of what I was saying, which is that alternative rock isn't really a genre of music. Yes, it is too broad. Also, i recanted the iTunes thing afterwards that was more of a joke than a serious statement. This is a ridiculous argument anyways, because it covers way too many rock genres. I think its just as difficult to find someone who likes everything included under the tent of alternative rock as you would someone who hates all of it. Alt rock has, at least where I live, gathered the connotation of dealing mostly with pop-punk, indie-rock (also a term I have a problem with), emo, things like that. Again, this may only be applicable to where I live. Emo and poppunk are fun to hate so thats probably why people say that they hate alt rock.
Because the record labels thought it sounded good.Pararaptor said:There's a reason it's called Alternative.
If alternative rock has subgenres, what do you even think alternative rock is? What differentiates alternative rock from regular rock? Both have a variety of disparate subgenres, but the sound of rock is still definable. The sound of bands commonly labeled alternative rock is not broadly definable in any way that meaningfully separates it from just rock.cleverlymadeup said:actually it's a term that's been used since the 80s to describe certain rock acts that didn't quite fit into the rock, punk or metal genresclairedelune said:OK. so yes grabbing a bunch of rock bands and tossing them under the alternative umbrella IS correct and does encompass the whole genre

Nirvana IS a grunge band. if you listen to all of them, they are all vastly different but do have a bunch of similarities. Alice In Chains became a lot more polished over time and so did Nirvana, listen to Bleach or Incesticide, they are vastly different than Nevermind or In Utero.
band like Mother Love Bone/Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and many more were grunge and really changed as time went on and have evolved the sound of their songs over the years, so much so it's almost totally different than when they started. Nirvana was doing that before Kurdt died.
as for the first grunge band, that would be The Melvins or Green River/Mudhoney. Dinosaur Jr is no where close to being grunge and never really were
