OK. This thread makes me angry.
1) Alternative Rock is a genre iTunes made up.
actually it's a term that's been used since the 80s to describe certain rock acts that didn't quite fit into the rock, punk or metal genres

2) Rage Against the Machine IS NOT ALTERNATIVE ROCK i just saw someone posted that and it made me shake my head in disappointment. They are metal in the broadest sense, but rap-metal really.
they are no where close to metal, more grunge or funk than metal. they always have and always will be alternative

4) I just saw someone list Nirvana. Also wrong. That would be grunge.
you do realize that grunge is one of the many sub-genres of alternative right? they were played on the same stations that played alternative music and were very popular with alternative music fans in the 80s and 90s when grunge started to sprout

5) People who are defending alternative rock seem to have no idea what it means because they are just throwing together a bunch of their favorite rock bands which all belong in different subgenres.
ummmm hate to say this but alternative is a very broad genre of music with many sub-genres, it rivals and probably surpasses metal for the broadness of its genres. i've listened to alternative for a long time and well i could pick 5 cds that are vastly different but still considered alternative music.

so yes grabbing a bunch of rock bands and tossing them under the alternative umbrella IS correct and does encompass the whole genre

Nirvana is a lot more grunge then punk. I would give that crown of first real grunge band to Dinosaur Jr. though.
wow wrong on both accounts.

Nirvana IS a grunge band. if you listen to all of them, they are all vastly different but do have a bunch of similarities. Alice In Chains became a lot more polished over time and so did Nirvana, listen to Bleach or Incesticide, they are vastly different than Nevermind or In Utero.

band like Mother Love Bone/Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and many more were grunge and really changed as time went on and have evolved the sound of their songs over the years, so much so it's almost totally different than when they started. Nirvana was doing that before Kurdt died.

as for the first grunge band, that would be The Melvins or Green River/Mudhoney. Dinosaur Jr is no where close to being grunge and never really were

@cleverlymadeup - I think you were missing the point of what I was saying, which is that alternative rock isn't really a genre of music. Yes, it is too broad. Also, i recanted the iTunes thing afterwards that was more of a joke than a serious statement. This is a ridiculous argument anyways, because it covers way too many rock genres. I think its just as difficult to find someone who likes everything included under the tent of alternative rock as you would someone who hates all of it. Alt rock has, at least where I live, gathered the connotation of dealing mostly with pop-punk, indie-rock (also a term I have a problem with), emo, things like that. Again, this may only be applicable to where I live. Emo and poppunk are fun to hate so thats probably why people say that they hate alt rock.

Also, do you read? Because you just spent 3 paragraphs convincing someone who said nirvana was grunge that nirvana is grunge.
This is a dumb and ridiculous argument to continute and I apologize for bumping this thread again, but I'm done with it.

I may be the most narrow minded person when it comes to music. Yet, examine closely for yourself, and see that it is true - no famous musician is 1 in 1000. You could find the same amount of talent if you look hard enough in a small town. I meet people more talented than the Beatles, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Green Day, Nirvana, Van Halen, Styx, Linkin Park, Eminem, etc. on a regular basis. Let's say, every 3 months. It's so easy to write something catchy. To be famous, luck is the only requirement (observe Ashley Simpson, Lady GaGa, every rap artist, every modern rock artist). I'm a music major, and I say that music hasn't made a major innovation in over 50 years. Ever since around the 40's, music has degraded, becoming less complicated, less sophisticated, less virtuosic, less original, and less fun. I prefer to challenge myself with some odd-metered jazz improvisation, 12 tone analysis, or counterpoint. Not something so simple that I can arrange the entire piece in my head before the song is over. The music you people refer to today has all the thought and talent of "twinkle twinkle little star." It's constantly being repackaged because you keep buying it, just like reskinned sequels to non-gameplay oriented video games. I admire how pleased people are with being ignorant.

I have no real opinion, I listen to anything... but I'd be interested to know when the term 'alt rock' stopped referring to stuff like Dinosaur Jr and Belly, and started referring to the stuff described in the OP.

I just plain dont like the people who are in the bands, they just come across as one od three charachters...theres the bob dylan wannabe, the emo,and the douche who just regurgitates whatever popular opinion there is out there e.g. five years ago 'republicans are evil, save the planet whoa!'

Everyone seems to think Alternative Rock is "emo." I personally think that there is nothing "emo" about it. I mean, sure, some of the songs are kind of... scream-y (I try to stay away from those, with the exception of Flyleaf), and some might have a slighly depressing meaning, but what exactly is the difference from listening to Three Days Grace and playing Silent Hill? Well, except for the fact that one you listen to, one you play, and one you watch. Again, I just don't get it.

So what I'm asking is this: what are your opinions on Alternative Rock? Do you think it is "emo?" If so, why?
Love it. Then again if it has guitars, it's on my approval list.

ok then metal or rock aren't genres or music by that logic because they encompass so many different types of music. also the same argument can be made for both of them and what people do and don't like under the metal and rock umbrellas. you're argument really fails because it's full of big holes that are easily proven wrong.

also much like metal and rock it started out as a set type of music and then expanded over the years to encompass a large variety of music and different sub-genres. so really your argument fails before it really gets out the gate

I think you've lumped a few genres together. I think the difference is more for the listener to decide, but anything with a lot of screaming is usually a bit unlike other alternative rock music(besides the screaming) which usually gets itself categorized as emo, screamo or something of the sort.
And I believe flyleaf is more of their own genre. They were originally a more christian rock band, but their sound is way heavier than most christian rock bands. They are close to other alternative and even metal bands and with some scream-ish singing and witrh a female leadf singer they have created a unique sound.
Anywho, I like most alternative rock bands.

Because what the Mainstream calls Alt. Rock, in fact ISN'T Alternative Rock at all

I like alternative rock, and by alt. I mean actually Alt. as in Underground scene or 80's London Scene or even the alt. scene in Germany.

Hard to like "alternative" music now since the bands/artists who once would have been tossed into that catagory are so popular now, they're not really "alternative".

One could argue that bands who were once popular and are now looked upon with disdain could be considered alternative. *shrug*

If alternative rock has subgenres, what do you even think alternative rock is? What differentiates alternative rock from regular rock? Both have a variety of disparate subgenres, but the sound of rock is still definable. The sound of bands commonly labeled alternative rock is not broadly definable in any way that meaningfully separates it from just rock.
