So there's nothing on TV and I decided to watch Pirates of the Carribean 2. I've just gotten up to the point when Davy Jones shows up. It got me thinking.

Say you were out at sea. You boat has run aground on a reef in the middle of nowhere. You are going to die. Then Davy Jones shows up and makes you his offer. 100 years before the mast. Do you serve on The Flying Dutchman? Or do you let death take you? I personally would choose to serve. You're still gonna die you just get given an extra 100 years. How about you escapists?

EDIT: Pretty much everyone is saying they'd rather die. That's easy enough when you aren't actually faced with death but when someone has a sword to your throat you might be feeling a little different about it.

Considering they were pretty much absorbed by the ship, you don't get out of your 100 years that easily.

Plus you'd have to deal with the body horror of becoming a sea-borne abomination.

Oh, and working non-stop for a hundred years.

Aww, from the title I was kinda hoping the question would be if you would rather serve in Heaven or rule in Hell.

OT: I dunno; I don't remember that movie very clearly.

But can you hounestly say you're free now? Can you really do whatever you want because you want to?

Maybe I'd do it if it meant I could go back and say goodbye to the ones I love, and spend some more time with them, but trapped aboard the Flying Dutchman? Nooooo.

Can you honestly compare your current level of freedom to that of a monstrous slave of Davy Jones?

OT: No. I shall not serve.

True. It is off topic but people aren't really free when you think about it.

Sure, life of a pirate would be great.

Ok honestly I wouldn't serve him since I just prolonging my feeble coward life just to hang onto it. Ok you mention he stick a sword at my throat, so what? What the worse can happen kill me or torture me? I would rather take my chances of heaven, hell or whatever the afterlife hold for me.

What a deep and profound statement.

After much contemplation and soul-searching, I have decided...

Yes, I can do what I want to.

Yes, but to compare it to slavery is simple preposterous. The notion of Freedom is not a binary concept, it is infact, measurable. To say we are not truly free is hardly revelation of any signifigance, as we are bound by biology and scientific law just as much as we are by society.

I find freedom overrated but I agree with you about pleasure, but hey you never know, maybe it's fun to be a fish monster and hunt down ship wrecked sailors.

Hmm maybe this would be good as it's own thread?

They do seem to enjoy themselves.
