I would challenge him to one-on-one combat. Me and him.

Let's face it, if I win, I get the Dutchman (and only become a fishy horror if I don't guide the souls of the dead) and if I lose, I straight up die.

Well I despise being on a boat anyway, so I wouldn't want another 100 years of being on one of the bloody things, especially not one I couldn't get off. Also the whole reasons that I'd want to live would be closed to me... I couldn't see any of my loved ones anyway, as I'd be stuck on the Dutchman.

In fact, seeing as how I hate boats, why would I be in the ocean anyway?

No. I don't want anything to do with that mutilating peice of shit ghost that will probally inevitably kill me anyway. I'd rather die than come within a 200-Mile radius of that thing.

depends, do i have to go all fish-mutant to serve, because hundred years of being a pirate sounds like fun, just not with me being half tuna

First off, not the biggest fan of pirates. Well, at least not the stereotypical eye patch peg leg "arrr" ones. Abandon the stupid stereotypes and get down to just bandits on the sea and I'm fine.

But to get to the offer, having only seen the first movie, I'm going based on what I've heard about the offer. Apparently if you take the offer you have to spend 100 years serving and having your flesh rot or something. Ya, doesn't seem worth it. Death is the ultimate freedom. To have nothing to worry about, nothing you need to do, no one depending on you. I'm gonna stop myself before I start getting poetic.

His tentacle beard creeps me out. Also, I wouldn't want to live 100 years as is, why would I want to be stuck that long serving tentacle beardy man take people's souls?

Only if I could serve completely naked and my naughty bits were replaced by tentacles.
I think I know where you're going with this...

TO JAPAN!

PS: Yes I would. Cause if I was a sailor/pirate and was offer the chance to be a semi-immortal pirate for 100years I don't really see the catch.

Part of the ship, part the crue.

My thoughts upon seeing the thread title: Hmm, would I serve on the Flying Dutchman? Oh wait, it's probably about the military.

Anyways, I don't think I would serve. I'm not a fan of mutated fish people. They smell.

I don't know if it's been said, but the reason they were monsters was because Davy Jones had forsaken his duty. The point of the ship was to help people cross to the afterlife.

What's the point to life without freedom or pleasure?
But can you hounestly say you're free now? Can you really do whatever you want because you want to?
Yes, actually I can. As long as what I want to do falls within the realm of scientific reality (i.e. I can't fly just by jumping off a roof and wanting to).

True. It is off topic but people aren't really free when you think about it.
You are free, you simply don't live up to it.

OT: No, it's a sad existence that I would most certainly not want to go through. Working non-stop for 100 years isn't my idea of a good life.

So there's nothing on TV and I decided to watch Pirates of the Carribean 2. I've just gotten up to the point when Davy Jones shows up. It got me thinking.

Say you were out at sea. You boat has run aground on a reef in the middle of nowhere. You are going to die. Then Davy Jones shows up and makes you his offer. 100 years before the mast. Do you serve on The Flying Dutchman? Or do you let death take you? I personally would choose to serve. You're still gonna die you just get given an extra 100 years. How about you escapists?

EDIT: Pretty much everyone is saying they'd rather die. That's easy enough when you aren't actually faced with death but when someone has a sword to your throat you might be feeling a little different about it.
I would choose to die.
and no, the decision wouldn't be any different for me. Slavery isn't living, it's just a slow death made from a meaningless and powerless existence. And serving on the flying Dutchman is slavery, make no mistake about it.

No. 100 shackled to a ship, never seeing anything but fleeting glimpses of the world that's changing around me, doing the same job for a hundred years, all to stave off the inevitability of death?

I would accept the deal if it allowed me to do the things that dying at that moment prevented me from doing or seeing. But that sounds like a bad deal- living with nothing worth living for.
